God of Highschool is trash

After that hype-ass first episode chase scene it hasn't recovered at all.
The characters are uninteresting, the mysterys are uninteresting and the pacing is HORRIBLE.

The marriage episode felt like it should have been the season finale to 12 episodes of character developments, instead its drama about characters i dont care about doing things i have no business to care about.

And worst of all, the fights aren't even that good. Don't get me wrong, they aren't bad either, but if your entire show is a tournament arc, you gotta deliver at least a consistent 8.5/10, when most of the show is a 6 with some 7's and 8's.

At least Deca-dence continues to be a joy

Yeah, the God of High School adaption is unfortunately not good.
I actually liked todays episode because it managed to set up some basic ass conflict and character drama and had cool action, but in the grand scheme of things it's too little too late I guess.

It's a shame, because I quite like the webtoon. It's not going to win an award when it comes to writing, but it's wildly better than what the frantic pace of the adaption delivers. And has consistently great action coreography and paneling that just gets better and better.

Example: Daewi vs Mori fight in the webtoon (chapter 35). The paneling in the first half is just awesome.

I don't know. They should have either taken their time with proper character development, build up, etc and ended it with the Mori vs Daewi fight or throw out all that stuff entirely and just have a continous, escalating action animation fest. As it stands, it tries to do both and achieves neither. :/

It's a shame because in theory, this should totally be my thing :/
But yea, most of all it feels hella rushed, like they wanna be done with it asap, oh well, maybe i give the webtoon a chance

New Haruhi light novel is coming out and we'll get an English version day and date. First new one in 9 years. And it was announced at the end of August, which is pretty important in Haruhi lore. Hope this leads to another anime season.

Japan is hyped.

Deca-Dence has really been awesome. It also highlights how much of a difference in quality there is between anime that's nearly not made with a plan and anime made based on source material where the author actually has an idea of where they are going.

Looking at you, Trigger.

I'm confused, Deca-Dence has no source material, it's an original production. Or am I misunderstanding something.

Seriously? Then I'm doubly amazed. I could swear I thought it was based on a light novel or something to that effect.

Yeah, it's original. Seems to have quite a history though, apparently has been in the works for 4 years.

Not to be obstinate about the point I sought to make earlier but this would explain it. I have had the distinct feeling so many anime productions, despite their budgets, tended to wing it with their plot and writing on an episode by episode basis. But Deca-Dence is one of the most thoughtful, tightest show I've seen in a while. It's truly amazing.

This is totally out of left field, because I've watched it ages ago, but Kamen Rider W has an episode where the 2 main characters are singing an actual insert song in a talent show in which the 2 performers of the opening song are judges.
That is all. (Also, W is great).

What are you watching this season? I am going to watch at least these three:

  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Munou na Nana
  • Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken

Already watched the first episode of Nana. As someone who have read the mange, the first episode is faithful but the pacing is a bit too fast.

Very, very excited towards Adventure of Dai. One of my favorite voice actresses, Tanezaki Atsumi is voicing Dai. I heard it has very good story as well, and I just can't resist a long, old-school adventure story.

Thanks for that list! I've fallen off the season-wagon so it's good to have at least a few pointers. Also, I'm about to finish Deca-Dence, and I really need to get back to Mahoutsukai no Yome.

Gonna watch Akudama Drive since that's written by Kazutaka Kodaka (Danganronpa)

Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle sounds interesting but idk if the source material is supposed to be good or not

I still need to get back to Deca Dence. I remember watching it for a few minutes of the first episode but not sure why I dropped it lol. Also be reminded that Dai is rumored to have over 100 episodes so you can decide if you want to follow it week-by-week.

Hypnosis Mic is super popular in Japan. Otome stuff is totally not my thing though (I would rather watch BL than otome) so can't speak about its quality. Some of my friends are excited towards it anyway so I will try to follow it's reception.

Holy crap! Though Dai's original showing was all of my childhood, and my memory of it has huge holes in the show's plot given that I wasn't able to watch it regularly. I need to finish it this time :p.

Inspired by you people, here's what my list looks like for now :
And Taisou Zamurai looks mighty interesting

I have absolutely not been keeping up with upcoming seasons for a while, so I took a look at this seasons line-up for the first time today.
Still haven't really taken a look at everything, but I've noticed a Jujutsu Kaisen adaption, and it actually had its first episode already, so I checked it out (I like the manga).

Yo that was really cool. Awesome style, animation and soundtrack. Potentially the next big thing™ in terms of Jump adaptions after My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer if they keep up this quiality.

It's basically a exorcism themed battle shonen with a serving of (body)horror.

Finished watching Deca-Dence. That was excellent throughout. Really great series.

Re Zero Season 2 Part 1 is now also over and boy was that really good as well. That season simultaneously had some of the most brutal stuff yet, but also some of the most emotionally powerful. The episode about Subaru's life before he got isekai-ed was beautiful, and imho is one of the reasons Re:Zero is a cut above most other isekai shows.

I've also watched the Made in Abyss movie and uhh, yes that was a Made in Abyss movie :sweaty-blob: :sweaty-blob: :grimacing-face: :grimacing-face: :blobxorcism::blobxorcism:
Although, while probably more fucked up than Season 1, I don't think it hit me as emotionally hard as that. But that might be partly because of "getting used" to it. :grimacing-face:

Is the Made in Abyss movie a continuation of Season 1, or a recap? :)

There are 2 recap movies (Journey's Dawn, Wandering Twilight), which I haven't watched, and a third one, Dawn of the Deep Soul, which is a straight continuation from season 1 and what I saw :).

Thank you! That show was so harrowing and wonderful at the same time. I'll never forget so many of those moments, even if it did get seriously creepily at times with its odd sexualization.

Yeah that stuff legitimately sucks. There's unfortunately some of it in the movie as well, though it probably isn't even half a minute total. Still, that adds nothing aside from making it harder to recommend. Ugh.

Watched the start of it, got increasingly uneasy. Then Reg got his arm cut off and pissed himself in pain and I noped right out. Not sure this is the kind of show I can enjoy anymore, despite the sense of awe and mystery of the Abyss.

I watched that movie in theatre back in Japan. Heard people crying when the credits roll but all I felt was anger and the urge to punch something.

Made in Abyss has its unique charm and I will keep waiting for season 2. But the author is a sick bastard.

I already knew that before that movie but at least it had meaning and it was more or less balanced against the rest. This made me seriously consider dropping the show entirely. It's just not worth the anguish at this point. There can't be a worthy payoff to such suffering that isn't sadistic and just stupid.

Yeah, if there is a season 2 I will keep watching but it wouldn't be a surprise that if I suddenly dropped it one day. Hopefully the movie is the series' worse (as in darkest) moment.

That show's animation budget is as ridiculous as its characterization and writing is really good. None of that wooden dialogue, the pacing is on-point, it's just a fantastic action/shonen show. I'm having a blast.

It's beautiful. Also, this is rather surprising given the kind of rating the show is getting. What's up with that? I know anidb can be, well, smug and elitist at the best of times, but this is still a bit low for such production values.

Actually it is a misleading shot. The majority of the scenes do not look like that haha. The show is more like a commercial for the original doll line. I think it is mindless fun with some good fight scenes. People may find it full of tropes but I don't mind them.

I binged Fire Force Season 1 over the weekend.
First of all, it looks ridiculously good. Fantastic backgrounds, lots of great animation and direction. DavidPro was on fire (pun not intended).

It is very entertaining, although the writing is honestly kind of shoddy. It's very style over substance - which isn't inherently a problem, that can be fun too (and it certainly is here!).

The bigger downer is more it's "comedy". Some of it is legitimately funny, some of it is so stupid that it kind of wraps around to being funny again (Everything Arthur basically, lmao). And then you have the "this girls special trait is that she can loose her clothes while just standing or trip over nothing and fall boobs or crotch first into whoever is currently near, isn't that funny?" type of comedy, which is just ughhhhhh. Hell, even the 1vs1 fight she got that tried to do some "I'm not useless, I can fight too!" character development ended with the enemy self destructing after she tripped and fell into the enemy/got groped. So yeah.

I have just finished the second one and I can confirm that this show is toe to toe with Jujutsu and Kimetsu for the productions that most impressed me this season. Seriously, the art of those backgrounds alone, woah.

I've recently found out that there is a Soul Land/Douluo Dalu anime and it already has over 100 episodes :sweaty-blob:

Soul Land was the first chinese webnovel I've read and still think it holds up. Tang Jia San Shao has a knack for writing interesting powersets that allow hype 1v1 battles as well as strategic team fights, as well as fun characters. I quite dislike some of his writing tendencies, but I've noticed them more in his other works and not so much in Soul Land.

Anyway, the anime is full 3D and certainly takes some getting used to. At times it looks really cool, at other times it looks like cutscenes from an early-2010s RPG, haha. Definitely going to continue for now though, and I'm really looking forward to see how some scenes and the action will look like.

I caught up. It's a blast to watch. I mean so far I've only been watching Jujutsu, so saying this is one of my favs this season right now is technically not a high bar, but still.

The only thing I dislike is that I don't like the opening song :(
Also those "pop-up" scene changes straight outta Danganronpa are the best.

Now to decide on which thing I'll give a shot next :thinking-face:
