Hey all. So I just noticed the Steam awards are starting as well, and my games can be nominated. Naturally I am not going to do this myself as that would be a bit of a dick move. And, realistically, I'm not going to win compared to all the other competition out there. But if you do enjoy the series, and wouldn't mind nominating Red Ripper specifically then that might help to draw attention to the books. I have still to hear back from the GDWC about what's happening with them, but every little way to get my games out there and noticed helps.

Thanks in advance! And don't feel you HAVE to nominate the games. I know there is a lot of competition out there and I am not sure if people are limited in what games they can pick. :) JUst noticed that they could be nominated and thought I'd see what sort of support I could get.

Good morning and I hope everyone is having a great Holiday season!

As a little catch up, everything is poised for Tattered Sails to go into full production in the new year, and Wight Chapel Dreams has over 300 entries written and plenty of space yet to go. As for today, I will be posting another round of short fiction for each of the games, accompanied by page art, as I did last year. In this case I have decided to align this with the Winter Sale from now on as that does give me a little more time to enjoy the holidays myself!

Here is the first. I hope you all enjoy it!

Coming Home

Squaring his shoulders, Jessip Kraye walked down the long, dusty road with his head held high. It seemed like a lifetime had passed since he left even though it was less than a month. And, despite all his misgivings, he had returned. It had taken all of his courage, and the plain advice of the old men who worked alongside him in the cannery, but he was finally here to set things right.

He could feel the purse of coins bouncing against his hip, and his hand kept dropping to the pocket where he had placed the small, plain ring of sea-gold. It was not much, but it was what he could afford with his modest wages. He hoped that his sincerity would make up for the harsh words he had said, and his desertion of his lover in the face of the shocking news. He was here to take her back, if she would have him, and prove his worth as a man with his gainful employment in the town of Red Drift.

He thought of how crowded the rented room would become, but pushed the thought away. He loved Annie with all his heart. It was just fear which caused him to run from his responsibilities as a father and leave Falk's Wash. It had been less than an hour before the pangs of guilt had settled in, and he had vowed to make something of himself before returning to propose marriage.

His search for work had paid off, so now here he was. The local preacher had already agreed to wed them – if Annie was agreeable – so now came the hardest part.

Jessip took a deep breath as the Benner inn came into view over the hedges. He hoped that his reception would be a pleasant one. Daydreaming of carrying his bride back home to live a life of wedded bliss, he knocked on the door.

Goggles of Diabolic Vision
Classification
– Cursed Artefact
Threat Rating – Contained

These hellish lenses were crafted by the mad artificer Nimmud Timmus alongside many other devices which perverted the science of optics. These included the sinister Carnivore Mirror, and the infamous Doppelgänger Box.

Believed by experts to be one of his earlier works, the lenses were originally set into a featureless brass mask. The wearer would barraged by a series of visions, such as the Heavens, Hells and even External dimensions. Keeping the head perfectly still would allow the wearer to view one of these places continuously, but even the slightest movement would break the image apart into a kaleidoscope of fresh horrors.

As a result, scholars theorise that the lenses actually allow the viewer to pierce the veil between our reality, and whichever plane is targeted by the fiendish device. Factors such as the person's age, height, birth sign and current facing are all used to determine what they will see. Added to this the fact that even a millimetre's difference in placement and bearing will change what the wearer sees, means they are essentially useless as a reliable means of remote viewing.

At some point the lenses were removed from the mask and physically bolted to a woman's face. Her eyelids had been removed, and the space between her eyes and the glass filled with an alchemical mixture to keep them moist. She was then given paper and charcoal to draw what she saw. It is not known if she was a willing participant in this experiment, or a victim of malice.

Since her death during the Harrow's Gate Incident, the lenses were recovered and placed in storage in the Capital's forbidden archive to ensure they never again blight this world.

Brother Belger's Reward

Brother Belger loved to talk. He would softly mutter to himself as he laboured in the scriptorium. He would engage in idle chatter while preparing inks in the workshops. He would even try and talk during mealtimes, a terrible breach of etiquette. No matter how often he was punished for this behaviour, he would not stop.

As the High Reader's plans gathered pace, his habit only escalated. He would abandon his duties to wander the monastery aimlessly, engaging any pilgrim or priest he came across in inane conversation. No topic was ever too small for him, and no situation too sacred to prevent him from opening his mouth to let loose another torrent of verbal garbage.

When order broke down, some of the monks noticed he seemed to be chattering on with little to no pause. His mouth ran at full tilt with nary a breath taken between words. As they barricaded themselves away in a futile attempt to hide from the disaster, they begged him to be silent so they could remain hidden.

But Belger prattled on and on without cease. Even when they beat him. Even when they stuffed a rag into his mouth. Not even kneeling on his chest stopped his monotonous monologue. As the doors were torn down, and the curse fell upon the screaming monks, Belger's chest began to fill with so much breath that he would never, ever run out.

It is a pity that he no longer has the wit to say anything of worth any more.

The Token

Amton hurried through the filthy streets, doing his best to avoid the Inquisitors and any desperate enough to kill him over the package he carried. His hands tightened around the pitiful bundle of meat, tucking it closer to his rags. As the oldest of the gang, it was his duty to deliver this year's token. With starvation and plague stalking the Low City of Roche Divine, they needed all the help they could get.

He ducked into a doorway without pausing. Speed would be key to his survival now. The dead, still air hung heavily as he approached the desk. He knew the ritual, whispered about by gang leaders and derelicts alike. He came to a stop, one hand hovering over the tarnished bell as the other kept a tight hold on the old beggar's severed foot.

He slapped his palm down on the bell. Ding! The sound of it echoed through the hollow, seemingly abandoned structure. Now he had to move again. His heartbeat thudded in his ears as he raced for the steps. Up he went, two at a time, while he fumbled in his pouch for the little, metal token. The words 'Bread, Please' were crudely scratched into the surface. He jammed it into the severed ankle as he reached the landing, just as he had been told.

He froze for an instant, scanning the darkness for threats, then began to make his way down the row of empty room. The stench was overpowering, but he had to get as far along as possible. Everyone in the district knew that the higher the room number you dumped your offering into, the more likely your prayer was to be heard. He passed the halfway point and hesitated. Surely this would be enough?

Something shifted in the darkness ahead, and Amton could not make himself go a step further. His bravery faltered, and he tossed his offering into the closest room, where it thudded down onto a pile of remains thankfully obscured in darkness. He turned...and stopped dead. They were already behind him.

His brief, terrified scream was ignored by the peasants in the street.

Happy new year everyone!

I was surprisingly busy yesterday so I didn't get to make my official new year post until today. I know 2020 was pretty crazy for a lot of people, and despite all the stress and pressure I was under I was nowhere nearly as affected as a lot of those out there. So I hope you all managed to make it to 2021 intact, and that this year is better for all of you. :)

In development news, I had some time to work on making sure Tattered Sails is good to hit editing as of next week. I will be contacting the editor on Monday to make sure they are free, and pushing it through when they have space. In the meantime, the tablet build has been made to help with the art pages, I have generated the random page order for when VO is good to go, etc. Muthur Brine has signed on for the art again, and I will contact Cryo Chamber when the core document is in for editing.

While all of that is going on I will try and complete Wight Chapel Dreams. It is looking like a chunky script already, as there are a lot of additional side paths and choice consequences to fill up the lack of death pages. We're 300 pages in and that's maybe dealt with the core path and first third of the side paths! We'll have to see how it goes, but it looks like it'll be a pretty hefty one by itself.

Anyway, hope you are all well, and happy new year!

[UWSL][UWSL]Grindwheel Games and Sanguine Productions have joined forces once again for their latest Kickstarter - Abyss! A supernatural pen-and-paper RPG in which you play heroes who fight terrible monsters from beyond the realm of nightmares.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]The game's description is as follows:[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]"The world has secrets in remote corners. Horrors from out of time. Devils that are out for blood. Monsters that feed upon the helpless, in ways beyond mortal understanding. Only a select few have the knowledge or the power to fight the supernatural, and the responsibility to protect the innocent falls upon your shoulders.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]But within every heart lurks a shadow. The forces that cultivate hate, that prey upon greed, that induce fear and terror... they are not just out there, they are within you. Can you fight with monsters without becoming one yourself?"[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]The project can be found here [/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL][/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL] , and as part of the backing options you can pick to add one of the Grindwheel Games titles to your order as an extra. There are plenty of other stretch goals too, so please give them your support![/UWSL][/UWSL]

Two observations, for what they are worth :blushblob:
It's too bad you didn't release a quickstart with the kickstarter campaign, at least for flavor. I like free things. And the special price to which a backer can buy the other TTRPGs / Games is not specified, could be clearer (I thought they were free at first, did I mention that I like free things ?).

Pretty cool otherwise, I'm pretty interested at first glance and will read the whole thing asap.

This actually took me a little by surprise! Our page artist started posting images from the project and discussing the kickstarter on Saturday, so I had to rush around to find out what was happening and check with Sanguine if they wanted to do the same deal as last time. They also let me know this morning they were having issues with the addons, so I am not 100% sure what's happening. But, ultimately, things are happening! Interesting things!

[UWSL][UWSL]Good morning. Just a quick weekend update. I would have posted this last week, but electrical work was being done on the flat so I didn't have a chance.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Tattered Sails is now in editing. The unlocked content has come back and been plugged into both the PC and tablet builds, and the core document is now being worked over. Once that comes back I should be able to sort out the changes, plug those all in, and send it off for VO. After that I can look into the art document, randomise the pages and generally get things all set up for delivery later in the year.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]As this goes on I have been working on Wight Chapel Dreams. That particular book is over the 400 entry mark and still has a good, long way to go! One of the reason I wanted to split this into 2 books was because of the size of story I wanted to tell with the flashback and return, and it looks like the pair will be pretty large.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Anyway, I will hopefully be able to post about when the script is back from editing without an interruption this time. Have a great weekend![/UWSL][/UWSL]

Good morning all! Tattered Sails is still with the editor, which is not surprising as it is a chonky script. Speaking of sails, or sales, all of the games are included in the Lunar New Year promotion. At 50% off they are the perfect way to fill up any loose corners of your shopping basket. Happy New Year!

And yes I am proud of that pun. Fight me!

[UWSL][UWSL]Just a quick update on [/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL]Tattered[/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL] Sails. The script has come back from editing, and I managed to get all the corrections plugged in pretty quickly. This meant I was able to get the art document sorted out, and the full script has been sent off for VO. I've tagged all the characters this time around to hopefully help with voice acting![/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]I also contacted Cryo Chamber about working on the new song, and so that's all working in the background.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]While I wait on these things to all come in I will go back to focusing on Wight Chapel Dreams for now. That's looking pretty good so far, and definitely on track to be completed by the end of the year.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Have a good weekend everyone! We're storming along as usual, so looking good for Halloween at this stage.[/UWSL][/UWSL]

Good afternoon all!

I have some quick milestone updates which I hit this week to share. The first one is that I am almost done with the pages written for Wight Chapel Dreams last year, which means that the game has over 400 pages plugged in and given a primary edit pass. I only have a small number to go before I am back to writing new content as well, which is pretty good news.

But that's not all! Muthur Brine sent through the roughs for Tattered Sails this week as well. Here is one below which I will try and keep you posted on when it goes through the various stages of feedback and development.

Nice and spoiler free. I hope you look forward to finding out what exactly is going on in this page. :)

Have a good weekend, and I will let you all know when we hit another important milestone!

[UWSL][UWSL]Bit of a surprise update today. I spoke to Cryo Chamber about doing the music for Tattered Sails, and was expecting them to get back to me later in the year. But over this last week they have delivered a new, amazing soundtrack for the game![/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Naturally you'll have to wait until the teaser trailer to get a sample of the score, but it is a deeply unsettling, very well themed piece which pairs well with another brilliant ambient layer by Dead Melodies.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Art is storming ahead too. As promised, here is the next stage of the image from the last update. You can see things a little clearer, and I can't wait for the coloured version to come in.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Any guesses for the context? Or are you happy to wait for the final reveal in Tattered Sails?[/UWSL][/UWSL]

i love the art so much! :) for real

oh, and great news about the soundtrack too! :D
Yeah, they did an amazing job again. I've got some ideas for how to jiggle up the trailer script, and a plan for the teaser this year, so we'll see how it goes. In either case, the song and ambient will work perfectly for these as well as the game as a whole.

Ok, got a couple of quick updates for the long weekend. :)

First off, last week we passed the 550 pages written mark in Wight Chapel Dreams. I'm also seeing some of the initial colouring work coming in on the art for Tattered Sails, and I will share that with you when the spoiler-free picture is among that set. Hopefully with the weather settling down a little too we might start getting Vo through as well.

I am also going to post the final version of the Traits system here, and send details off to Lovecraft gaming when I have settled on that. On that note, I have decided on a change from this game onwards. The 'Underdog' achievement will be swapped out with something a little nicer to get, which will be beating the game on hard with no trait or heirloom selected. That still adds a bit of a challenge, without having to re-roll your character over and over until you get the right skill cap. It'll also mean that games can approach the hardness of Red Ripper without having to up the skill cap on that achievement again.

As one final thing, I have settled on some changes to the Wight Chapel Dreams code which will be carried forward. From now on enemies will be presented in a 'stat block', which means that I don't have to write paragraphs explaining why they have extra damage or drop your skill. While there might be some discussion on this in the page details, it will no longer be mandatory.

Take a look and let me know what you think!

[UWSL][UWSL]Good afternoon all.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]So, we hit a couple of milestones this week, which is why I am sending out an update. First off, Wight Chapel Dreams is maybe 5-6 entries from being done! I have been focusing on the writing side of things, so when I have those last endings written I will begin plugging the pages in asap. It looks like it will weigh in at around 630 in total, which makes sense because there are only 2 combat death posts due to it being a flashback to your first case.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]There may be a few more which get added as I go, but this seems like a pretty decent size to me.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Secondly, the art pages are in for Tattered Sails! I am working with Muthur Brine on the front cover and word art, and once I have that I will begin to get it up on Steam. In the past I have not gone with a 'beta' version of the game, waiting until it was all in place before uploading, but in order to get it out there a little faster I will be presenting a version of the game to reviewers, testers and the GDWC 2021 without voice lines.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]This, of course, means that the page I have been teasing you with is now finally done! You can see that below.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]I'll let people know more when we cross new milestones, but both games are well on track as we speak.[/UWSL][/UWSL]

[UWSL][UWSL]Good afternoon all![/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]The VO for Tattered Sails is coming in steadily now, and Muthur Brine should have the front cover for me very soon. Once that happens I will be able to put up the Steam page, as well as finish off a teaser trailer I have been working on.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]The new material for Tattered Sails means I had to put the QA and testing of Wight Chapel Dreams on hold. That's because I finished the core work, and the unlocks, and everything is now plugged in. I ran it through the output program and was completing the checks at a steady pace when the focus moved back to Tattered Sails.[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]My current plan remains to get the Steam page up with a 'beta' build for testers and reviewers as soon as the front cover is finished. Once that is done I can focus on getting all the VO plugged in and have until the day of release to polish all that rather than racing for the last second. I estimate it'll take me ~10 weeks to get all the VO created, with some reviewed and implemented. Thankfully the polish pass phase is not too bad, and I can average 50-75 entries a day if I do nothing else, so we're looking pretty good at getting things in without burning myself out.[/UWSL][/UWSL]

[UWSL][UWSL]Once that is done it'll likely take a couple of weeks to have Wight Chapel Dreams all tested and ready for next year. That will allow me to dive right into Return to Wight Chapel for 2023. I'm still undecided as to what should come next out of the titles I have planned after this 2-parter, but since I only need to worry about that in a year and a bit I'm sure I'll think of something. :)[/UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][/UWSL]
[UWSL][UWSL]Have a good weekend, and I will let you know when that last element for the plan comes in![/UWSL][/UWSL]

[UWSL][UWSL]Have a good weekend, and I will let you know when that last element for the plan comes in![/UWSL][/UWSL]

SOON...

[UWSL][UWSL]...[/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL]Tattered[/UWSL][/UWSL][UWSL][UWSL] Sails will have a Steam page! As I now have the front cover, I have been able to put this teaser trailer together using that and some of the VO for the game. We're currently still on for a Halloween launch, as planned, and Wight Chapel Dreams will then go back into testing for 2022.[/UWSL][/UWSL]

[UWSL][UWSL]In the meantime, enjoy the teaser below, along with the front cover.[/UWSL][/UWSL]

[UWSL][UWSL]SOON![/UWSL][/UWSL]

So, today was a little hectic. My antivirus started a fist-fight with Unity, which then got into an argument with Steam, so I am a little delayed in posting this...

The Tattered Sails Steam page is live! You can wishlist now for a Halloween launch. I'm about 300 pages into the VO editing, so should probably be done with that by September, giving me plenty of time to polish and plug them all in. After that, back to Wight Chapel Dreams, and then onto Return to Wight Chapel.

In other news, thanks to Treecle () streaming Pale Harbour and Vile Philosophy, I noticed a couple of minor bugs which had slipped through the net. Notably, when you used a medical kit, you updated the boxes but not the text value. Getting that up and running was part of the brawl between my systems which pushed this announcement back to right now.

All the games have been updated, so that will no longer be a problem!

Cheers! I don't know what my machine is doing right now, but I was uninstalling and re-installing all day just to test a few fixes. I'll likely be up late tonight making sure all the achievements are working so I have a clean run at more voice clips tomorrow. Still, plenty of time to go before launch, and the core thing is making sure the page is up months in advance. :)

yup, absolutely ... always good to get the word out there as early as possible :)
Indeed! I just finished checking the new achievements work and they all do. This includes a new system for custom ones where you have to hit the right page with some of the generic variables and toggles set. That should make them a little harder for people to hunt down. ;)

Anyway, I'll enter the 'beta' version into the GDWC tomorrow, and hammer on with the voice clips. Now I have that version up and most of my list of other jobs done I will be able to start editing and plugging in the ones I have finished too, so that will take the edge off a little as well.

Got to keep Grindwheeling on!

Is it Wednesday or Sunday? I can't tell, because either way it is hump day!

I passed the halfway mark on the voice editing for Tattered sails this weekend. I still have the rest to go, followed by any re-dos and finally the editing and plugin. But, with luck, I am on track to be done with that by the end of August or start of September. Then I can head back to Wight Chapel Dreams, and focus on the games actual release.

Oh hi! I didn't see you there. I was just releasing the new trailer for Tattered Sails.

A little late due to technical issues, but better late than never. :) I am getting it onto the Steam page now, and once it has been cleared it'll be on the store properly.

In other news, I have been hammering the voice lines, and am at about 550 out of 670. I should have the last of them done by the start of September at this rate, then I can go back for all the redone lines while polishing and plugging everything in. After that I'll go back to Wight Chapel Dreams, which should take another few weeks to get tested, and then I'll be able to take a nice break...by starting Return to Wight Chapel. :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Aaaand...done!

As of yesterday the first pass on Tattered Sails 670 voice clips has been completed. Plugging them in with a little polish will take a week or two, and there are some which needed to be redone, but overall we're looking pretty good. Definitely going to have them all in place for October so reviewers can get a hold of copies with the shiny new voice clips.

There are less which need to be redone this time around due to my dad's new setup. The volume and positioning meant that pretty much any clip could be edited into another if a word was missing or mispronounced, allowing me to repair minor issues which would have needed a redo in the past. So that's all good!

But, it isn't all good news. I contacted Shark Robot about adding the Tattered Sails cover...and they said no. Sales of the first 4 game posters have been so low that they have rejected the design, and will remove the rest from the store by the end of the year if an improvement is not seen. I MAY be able to get them onto another site elsewhere, but that will only really be able to happen after the Shark Robot contract has been terminated, so they may be gone for a while, possibly forever.

If you have been holding out on getting one, now may be the perfect chance and/or last time! So go take a look if you have a moment.

Well, it took all of yesterday to grind out the last 100 clips...but they are all now polished, plugged in, and the build uploaded. Tattered Sails are on the horizon and will arrive Halloween, as promised!

This means I can get back to testing Wight Chapel Dreams, doing my taxes and a load of other stuff that hammering out the clips had put on the back burner. Fun times! Hope everyone is having a great weekend, and I'll update people when I have more news!
