Some great news today, phew.

Hopefully the Dragon Quest games are coming to PC day 1.
I wish I could say of course!, but DQ's track record has been rather spotty. DQ remakes are still Switch exclusive, DQ XI arrived late IIRC, DQ Builders 2 arrived but was buggy was a very long time.

I can only hope at least DQ XII arrives proper on PC simultaneously.

DQ XI arrived late IIRC
The PC version of DQXI launched day and date with the western version (PS4/PC)
But then they made the content-improved-graphically-downgraded version switch exclusive which came later to the other devices.

But even if it launches day and date I expect S-E to make an improved version later and they'll sell it at full price.

So much Dragon Quest incoming :wd_praise:
DQ3R (cool new acronym) looks so good, that's exactly what I expect a modern 2D HD game to look like

DQ12 going for something darker I'm less convinced about, but there's a lot of time before it comes out.

DQ10 I dunno, the chibified style and the old ass MMO combat are not super fun so...

DQ Treasures I'm interested to learn more about, seems like an RPG more focused on exploration. Maybe good, maybe bad, ain't DQ Monsters like it was supposed to be though.

With Squares choice to go EGSclusive with their franchises like Kingdom Hearts, it feels a bit hard to really get excited about these games. Knowing them, the games won't hit PC a year after consoles, and then you lose another your to Tim's bullshit moneyhatting.

I'm happy for people who are into DQ, but it's the one JRPG franchise I really couldn't care less about. I got DQ11 to support the timely PC release and still haven't even installed it.

If they expect this thing to run current-gen AAA, that's on them. You are absolutely right, base PS4 performance with maybe a better CPU is exactly the kind of ballpark performance we can expect, which would be a leap over what is currently available. I wrote about my expectations for such a device on Era:

I honestly don't think it's an outlandish expectation. The current crop of PC handhelds often requires using low settings, going below 720p or tweaking power profiles to get solid performance. 720@60 on last-gen games would already be a huge step forward.
Yeah I think graphically that should be doable on an RDNA2 APU, going to 720p gives you a lot of headroom. The 60 FPS might be difficult in some PS4-tier games on the CPU side though, depending on how well they were ported and how well they take to Proton/dxvk.

Maybe but it's not like Dragon quest is that popular outside of Japan so I doubt it would bring many people to the store.

But this is Square who we're talking about so who knows ...

I am stoked for DQ3R. Looks fabulous and I haven't played any of those games until like 7, I think? Since it's a series with a heavy focus on traditionalism in terms of gameplay, I think it'd absolutely work out if they just remade some of those first six or seven all over again.

As excited for DQ XII as I am, is Sugiyama still doing the music for it? The fact that we lost Miura but this fucker is still alive and kicking (and expecting royalties) is a travesty.
I am out of the loop here, what is the story if I can ask?

For starters he's a war crime denialist.
That and being anti-LGBTQ seem pretty unpleasant. I'm guessing this about Nanjing?
Lotsa devs spamming twitter about how cool UE5 nanite is and how trillions of polys still perform good in it and crap. What even is it? Lumen is I guess the new lighting solution with proper indirect lighting, light bounce, etc.? And nanite? Some kind of auto lod of uber detailed stuff like seamless tessellation everywhere?
I also seem to be reading it includes some DLSS type tech that gives 4k quality frames from 1080p res rendering? Temporal Super Resolution @ bottom. Wut?
Nanite is something truly amazing. Forgetting about Epic's marketing and the way they will, like any engine maker, push their new features as the best thing since sliced bread. Some things aren't really that incredible to me and seem like a first step into diversifying like the meta-audio stuff. As someone who's interested in this, I think there's merit to a dynamic, systemic nature but UE5 is not where you are going to engineer and play around with your samples. They have two decades of audio industry to catch up to there.

Back to Nanite, it's just a fantastic tech that leverages SSDs. It also doesn't come for free. There's no magic bullet in games and that's no exception, but it is something truly good to have if you can afford to pay the CPU overhead. Given the performance, I think it's fair to say that it's not necessarily a choice you instantly want to make. It's running at 30fps on the next-gen consoles without anything in the way of a game surrounding it. No AI, no world activities, just animation and rendering.

I also think that Nanite may be adding a ton of overhead in terms of the initial data set to stream in. You've probably seen that it takes something like 5 to 7 seconds to stream in a terrain chunk. That's just not acceptable depending on your player's travel speed. Its trade-offs are just not that well-known yet given that it's brand new and marketed to hell, but I'm still enthusiastic about it. The basic idea of hierarchical triangle decimation is just perfect for SSDs, but there are other ways to use that hardware and this may not be the best way to spend your resources depending on the game you are making.

I do wonder how they managed it without having holes between differing triangle hierarchical levels of detail though. A few solutions come to mind but that's pretty neat. I do remember this particular technique not producing great results a decade ago, but things move fast in graphics.

Storm Ground impressions:

This is a rogue-lite.
You choose one of the 3 armies, and go through battles attempting to collect chests for more equipment cards, while defeating enemies in battles.
You gain EXP when killing emies and when completing missions. You continue to play til you die or complete a story route.

So far I like it but would've liked some more tutorials. I'm still slowly learning the game but I wish it would give better info on enemies, as the undead army has a unit that explodes upon their defeat, damaging nearby units (yours included!). This kind of enemy should be slain via ranged units, although melee units can push enemies so it can help keep them away before they are defeated.

After a few more hours I feel I can give a more better opinion but so far it is nice.

This just digital art (UE is used a lot in those), but still, we might see games approach this level.

Fanatical's BundleFest starts today

Their current flagship ends in about 2 hours. I assume they will start with a new Killer Bundle in the first day.
It's kinda strange that they start their Bundle Fest on a Thursdays. Don't they usually start on Mondays?

Definitely. 720p@60fps on average would be a great result for such a device but there will certainly be exceptions for the reasons you mentioned.

I hope they never believe you. It's way funnier when they become shocked and angry after every reveal.

Storm Ground is Rogue-like or -lite ? Are there progression elements that you keep between campaigns ?

One of the biggest reasons I dislike EGS is because I was a huge Unreal Engine fanboy and they took that away from me by tainting it for me. Took away the hype I feel for the new tech they do.
Yeah I always viewed Epic as one of the "better" game companies, if you will. But with Fortnite's success that slowly changed because they started doing some weird stuff (copying PUBG, bypassing the Play Store on Android out of greed, overworking their devs etc), and then of course EGS just flushed their reputation down the toilet.

edit: of course, in hindsight, Sweeneys remarks on PC back in the 2000s....not a great thing. But I didnt really pay attention to Epic after Unreal Tournament.

Trying some software.

It basically destroyed Kim's jacket, at least colour wise. That software is no good. Harry's beard is also lost and replaced with some stubble.
That's just the opposite of disco.

Everyone playing with UE5 and here I am, doing crystal birds in blender because I DON'T KNOW!
Because that's the first thing you have to do when you have a raytracer on your hands, of course.

Btw, if this is your work, nice modeling!
