No, Apple is entitled to some manner of compensation for letting Apps on the store in general, and currently that is 30%.

I thought madjoki was only referring to the damages. If that is not the case, and he was referring to what you posted, that is interesting. I am eager to see whether Apple will try to go after Netflix, Kindle and Spotify for the licensing fee which they are entitled to. If they don't, I guess "reader apps" and "subscriptions models" will be booming.

Apple exempts reader apps like Netflix from many of rules. And they can soon link outside, due to earlier lawsuit settlement.

The question is why would Apple refuse to go after what they are rightfully entitled to?

And they can soon link outside, due to earlier lawsuit settlement.
This won't be specific to "reader apps" after the Epic vs. Apple trial.

So what will be specific to "reader apps" in the future is that they are allowed at the discretion of the platform owner to profit from Apple's intellectual property without paying any commission fee.

On top of being allowed to abuse the system to avoid IAP: they link to their website without offering an IAP equivalent using Apple payment system.

It's something that they currently allow with exceptions, would be harder to add fees back than have from beginning.
Especially as Spotify, Netflix is someone who Apple competes with subscriptions.

Ultimately Apple can choose how much and for what they charge - there's plenty of arguments they can use to differentiate games & reader apps.

Guess we will see in December :p

Another game snagged by Epic despite having a Steam page:

Is it me or is the amount of EGS exclusive announcements increasing again? I was hoping Epic would stop this nonsense since they are going for full exclusivity with their published games now. What on earth are they hoping to achieve after 3 years of underperforming exclusives? 🤔

Last time I was told, yes, Epic was looking for some last minute deals but I don't know how many of those were actually successful nor if it's going to be a change of strategy but it seemed like they wanted to kinda ramp up their slate of exclusivities for the near future

Honestly... I'm not surprised. EGS always seemed like an ego driven project, and between everyone dunking on them for showing no growth during the pandemic and how badly the case against Epic went (which was kind obvious during the trial itself), I was expecting them to double-down more.

What's the alternative? Admit that your strategy was wrong, try to improve the store and wait to see the results of your publishing deals? That's just absurd :p

They're either deals that were signed long ago (Saints Row, Crysis, maybe Tiny Tina), part of Epic's Hail Mary attempt or Tim Sweeney being too stubborn to admit that he got his ass whipped by hyper-toxic pro consumer humorless trolls. In any case it doesn't matter anymore, nobody cares about EGS and the games that are thrown into that black hole of a store simply disappear from customers' minds until they arrive on Steam.

I'm 90% sure that there's a Tim tweet (the other 10% is that it wasn't a tweet and it was an interview) where he said that after the first few batches of exclusives they would make deals earlier in development, while this sounds like the opposite.
But predicting something with this company is like trying to understand their top seller list.

Perhaps. But it's been a while since we've seen exclusivity deals for games that were already being advertised on Steam. And lately it's happening again, Tiny Tina has a store page as well.

This may indicate that this was a recent deal, meaning that Epic recently decided to go full-in on exclusives again. I'm just curious why that is. Perhaps because this years exclusives didn't do very well (especially Kingdom Hearts and Crysis Remastered), leading to a lack in growth in 2021 as well.

Company strategy depends greatly on what Sweeney feels like that particular day (obviously with some limits, but I'm not really joking here)

Geoforce, don't get me wrong but when you see more than one exclusivity deal announced in the same month you tend to overreact and it's not what it's happening right now.

Epic is always willing to pay however companies will decide depending on their internal projections and no, we haven't seen a spike in terms of deals, hell, until this day from 2021 less than 15 deals and I will talk about this when the year is about to end.

Seriously, calm down and let things go the way they need to go, if a game goes EGS might be for something and not for a very good reason (when AAA, not indies, those fellas need more support and don't really mind getting the check)

Pure speculation time!

If it seems like Epic is focusing on exclusives again, then I think it has more to do with the fact they underestimated how much they would have to do to make the store successful. There was likely a lull in certain types of spending since there were probably assumptions the store would be at a better state by this point. It does not appear to have achieved much outside of the free game giveaways. Given this, Epic may be again interested in signing exclusives from titles from other publishers/genres/etc. to build out a wider audience and reach folks they think they have yet to acquire or retain.

I still think Epic is treating the store as a mere means to its larger goals. Which is to say, they likely do not stress if the store is profitable in and of itself, more so they just want users. Those users are needed to convert into future metaverse users. Of course, they do not want to lose money needlessly, but I think they are fine to keep kicking the profit can further and further out if it means they can have a better time with their metaverse plans and use their operations as evidence for their legal battles.

That said, I still think they are taking their approach the wrong way given the gaps in service in Steam they could have filled, but instead continue to try to overlap entirely and will likely cost themselves more time and money for what is a riskier take on something already precarious given how the market may shift towards subscription. cloud services, and/or someone else's metaverse before they ever reach profitability. Though this is the company that thought it was a good idea to purposefully violate contracts with Apple and Google and use it to help their legal case. :shrugblob:

Semi-related note:
One of the more surprising aspects of the Apple trial was learning just how little they make off of Unreal Engine. It really has been Fortnite and outside investment that has made their plans possible. I wish we can get a glimpse of how Fortnite spend has trended into 2020 and 2021YTD, maybe from the Google trial. :evilblob:

To be honest I don't see this "going full-in" that you mention. We've had E3, the PC Gaming Show and Gamescom and only a handful of exclusives were announced. Which games made you form that impression?

Until they arrive on Steam or EGS gives them away for free*

Industries of Titan, a game that hurt two years ago when it went EGSclusive, is still in Early Access on Steam. Like, they still have a ways to go on their roadmap.

I'm cool with indies using EGS as an easier "Kickstarter."

Same here. I'm always about the "final" release of a game anyway, so as long as I can play that when it's ready, I couldn't give two craps if they took Epic for a ride while they developed the game. Hades is a prime example of that.

Frankly, Early Access on EGS sounds like a way for developers to avoid actually making the final game exclusive while getting a payout from Epic regardless.

It also circumvents the issue games have with launching the release version of an early access game. Many games in early access didn't really get massive hype for their 1.0 release (unless early access wasn't the fully game)
The counterpoint is, that you have a strict timeline where your early access game HAS to be finished, unless you just don't release the game when the exclusivity window runs out and release 1.0 when you think you are finished (always a risk, your game could be forgotten in the meantime.

I like how everytime I start EGS client, a little popup appears telling me the activation of some Ubi game failed. Every single time. Despite the two Ubi games I bought on EGS working perfectly and being redeemed in my uplay account.
I even contacted the EGS support, without any positive result.

It looks like it could be Fortnite.

or a bundle for Fornite:

What is weird is that the Beef entry is listed as MOBA, while Fortnite would be Action & Adventure. Maybe Paragon will be back.

A new Fortnite SKU is coming out soon (or maybe is already out in some regions) as it has a new bundle and some additions, sorry as I don't know anything else, just saw the usual movement in the social network and remembered.

Epic is missing out on a lot of money. Naraka Baldepoint has still not released on EGS despite being mid-sept, it has currently daily 100k+ players on Steam and almost 40k reviews, the game has no doubt made Valve a ton of money.

Wonder what's going on, the devs are trying to implement EOS, but it's really difficulty? The devs just don't care about EGS?

I think it's rather because Epic's self publishing tools still aren't ready, and that the sole employee providing content for EGS hasn't enough time to release all requested/popular games.

I would think Epic would have personally helped NetEase getting the game on EGS considering how well it is doing on Steam,

Wait it bombed on consoles? I thought it sell pretty well though
It was 17th on the US charts in its launch month, Tenth in the UK on its launch week, and sold 28k on Switch and PS4 combined in Japan on its launch week, and sold 3k the week after on Switch, while the PS4 version fell off the charts meaning it sold less than 2k.

The game came out between a bunch of other releases and Square's marketing for the game was shit, They advertised Balan Wonderworld more.

Store page is up. $60.

Most new EGS releases have achievements. I think Kingdom Hearts has them.
Well shit.

In any case, it being 60 bucks means that I won’t buy it soon. I’m on a tight budget for the time being.
