Harry Potter is lame anyway. It's one of those things that I believe people hold dear because that's what their families gave them to read as a kid but doesn't really hold up as an adult.
I never really rated it as a kid. The worldbuilding is rather ho-hum, but my main issue with the books is that they don't really have anything to say and just actively encourage upholding Rowling's particular brand of boomer neoliberalism.

It abhors slavery but tacitly benefits from it.

It abhors fascism but carries water for it.

It abhors racism but only if it is racism against the wrong race.

All of this is present in the subtext. I never "got it" as a kid, but its liberal smugness irked me so much.

Terry Pratchett was a much more wholesome author who actually had interesting things to say in his fiction.

Always nice to come across another fan of the Discworld.

I will always highly recommend the Discworld books, especailly the Guards books. And the Death focussed books. And the Witches books. Well pretty much all of them.

Would be great if FF7 was only a 6 month EGS exclusive but probably not since Kingdom Hearts were a year.

Then again the PS5 FF7 version was 6 month exclusive (June-Dec) so maybe Square isn't doing 12 month deals with the title.

It would be a good summer game too because in fall there is Soul Hackers and winter will be Starfield so spreading these rpgs out will be for the best.

JK Rowling is awful. I won’t be buying the Hogwarts game, no matter how good it looks.

But that’s my choice. I’ll happily encourage a boycott and I think people should not buy the game, if only to show solidarity with trans people, but I’m not gonna get preachy about it because the impact is going to be minimal and probably hurt the developer more than Rowling.

Buy whatever the hell you want because in the end Rowling is already obscenely rich and has near limitless resources to inflict harm on trans people. I personally won’t give her any of my money, but that’s as a principle rather than trying to punish her.

I hope she gets her comeuppance one day, but people boycotting a game set in her fictional universe ain’t it.
It likely won't impact the developers (workers) either way, but the game director is purportedly alt-right as well, so boycotting definitely not a bad call.

For me JK Rowling is like Orson Scott Card. Somebody who actively supports their hatred. So they are on a no buy list. Or if I do, then they are second hand purchases where the creators won’t receive any of my cash.

I will say Rowling will, in all likelihood, have already been paid for this when she signed the deal with EA. And at the very least EA would have resisted as hard as they can against some form of profit sharing.

However I am not going to preach to anyone who does and I definitely won’t judge them. As I get older and older. As I have started to lose more friends and family than I would like. I realised there is no reason to push people away because I disagree with their own opinions. Life is just far too short for that sort of crap.

I will just add that if it comes to actual hatred from my friends though, they can fuck right off. Life is also to short to tolerate bigotry from friends.
speaking of discworld, if I ever would start reading books, that would be the series that I would start with!
The audio books are pretty good as well.

Also free* on Gamepass.
Well, this is just me, but JRPG's going up on XGP don't really move the needle for me in terms of buying or not buying a game. They just take so much time to play that I tend to play them over months, if I ever finish... and when MS announces the game coming off the service, they'll have my save file with tens of hours hostage, effectively forcing me to buy the game on a MS platform (W10/Xbox) which I dont appreciate. So its more of a demo service when it comes to long games.

Also, the new Phantom Breaker fighting game is up on Steam:

I've listened to this whole get-together, theres a 2 hour version of it all as well. When it came to this topic, it struck me that even people who agree Valve earns their 30% cut, they fail to see some key points

· The host sure loves interrupting the others. Made for a tedious listen after a while, but thats a bit beside the point here ;)

· Valves cut goes down to 20% after a certain threshold of revenue is achieved
· Steam keys - Valve gets nothing from them, and there is a whole bunch of key shop websites benefitting from this system. Epic keys still get Epic their 12%
· Steam cash cards - Valve loses money on them
· Extra fees that Valves takes out of their cut
· Valve investing their profits in advancement of tech left and right. Proton is just the most visible
· A sustainable cut is good for customers in my opinion: less risk of the platform holder to pull the plug ("we're not making money off of this, we'll slowly abandon it")
· The narrative that Epics better cut would get passed on was complete BS... but the Epic freebies sure established the EGS as the shop that you dont really pay for your games anyway....
· Everyone forgets that other stores had better cuts before Epic styled themselves as PC gaming saviours, those are always conveniently forgotten and Epic is praised as great innovators
· Fascinating that people still think Epic strives for feature parity with Steam when they basically always said "ah you now, we wont offer a community and reviews, just use MetaCritic and Discord"

Just something that popped into my head all of a sudden while going through my daily Discovery queue and being shown a Russian dev'd game.

How is Valve paying Russian devs anymore if at all? Are they even allowed to with sanctions in place and SWIFT/banking cut?

Just something I was randomly thinking...

They don't pay Russian devs, they are most likely witholding any money until the Swift sanctions are removed.

Maybe holding the money until they can find a workaround or the actions are over.
Or the dev (if possible) can make a new account in a western Bank if they don't already have a western bank.
Although, Valve is basically a Bank.

Funny anecdote about corporations and how they are basically banks. I worked support for a big electric company where you pay a constant rate every month and get a final bill with the real consumption at the end of the year and you either need to pay more or get back what you paid too much. Some individuals and small firms are using this as a bank, massively overpaying every month to get money back at the end of the year.
The reasons are manifold:
  • people who only pay 10 to 20% more to not get any surprises at the end of the year (I also do this to an extent when I didn't have a financial cushion).
  • as an end of year Christmas bonus
  • circumventing alimonies or bankruptcy payments that are tied to your monthly costs of living. They can't, for example take away necessary payments for utilities, so if you pay 100€ instead of 50€ every month, you have 600€ at the end of the year available that would have been lost. Of course, if the company rats you out, or someone gets ahold of the end-of-the-year payment, you are in deep trouble. But the company I worked for didn't care, everyone who pays more every month is money they have available.

The only other option is to not sell games from Russian devs where you can't pay out.

Had a nightmare moment today. Turned on my PC, while walking to the bathroom I heard a weird bleeping noice, then walked back from the bathroom, PC was not on, tried turning it on multiple times, didn't work, looked into the PC, GPU light was on, so it did get electricity, checked the PSU (oldest component in the PC), seemed okay, tried turning it on, didn't work, got super scared, then I reconnected the power cable, turned it on and my PC started.

Nightmare scenario.

Oh no!! Youtube has forced Vanced to be discontinued :(

It's no longer possible to download Vanced
It's a sad day indeed. I hope I can use the current Vanced for the coming months until a worthy successor comes out ( I don't want web wrapper apps like NewPipe).

You're a prisoner stuck on a submarine submerged in a "blood ocean". All the planets & stars have died.

Thanks to brilliant sound design, IL does atmosphere better than a lot of multimillion dollar AAAs. The entire game space consists of a claustrophobic L-shaped corridor no more than 10 feet long.

Damn I love indies.

Discworld books are great. Terry Pratchett was an amazing talent, sorely missed.

I remember a Discworld game, sort of point and click. Had Tony Robinson (Baldrick) voice Rincewind if i remember correctly.

....................

Yeah here it is...

Yeah, this was the game that convinced me to get a CD Drive back in the day. Came on something like 40 plus floppy disks. After that it was CD ROMs all the way.

The best version of the audio books are they Tony Robinson ones. Unfortunately the early ones on audible are Nigel Planer who is a bit hit and miss, then Stephen Briggs who is pretty good.

not all banks are removed from swift also if banks already have bilateral messaging systems they can still use those , or they can use faxes.
There are also non-Russian banks connected to SPFS (russian equivalent of SWIFT so to say, although it still has limitations compared to SWIFT).

That said I dunno what Valve is doing /will do if just witholding money or not, just pointing out that there are still ways to send money.
Maybe they can't pay dev A, but they could pay dev B if the latter bank still has ways to make transactions, if they decide to do or not that I dunno

The controller calibration tool wont save my deadzone settings no matter how many times I try. My left stick is set to zero and no matter how many times I adjust the slider the setting always resets to zero.
