Just as a comparison in tone and class, this is how my boss (another tech big name), announced his decision to pay for the checkmark.
I don't agree with it, but I can appreciate and respect his point of view.

His point is nonsense but he said it in a nice way.

Era has a lot of under the radar console trolls, especially Sony and Nintendo fans, both of which are feeling very fragile about how successful PC is due to PC ports and Steam Deck.

Not gonna blame moderation for it because how do you deal with something like that? But the bad faith takes and poll results show it rearing its ugly head.

There's far less exclusives nowadays than there was a year or two ago, less bigger too, I guess Dead Island 2 is big, but before that was Rockat City or whatever it's called and before than some indie game that went into the blackhole.

Based on Epics own numbers, the 3rd party revenue stats is doing badly too.

Well yes, according to Sweeney Epic will focus on money hatting less games but with higher profile (AA, AAA) as indies aren't selling well on EGS. I assume this means high profile games are selling well, or Epic and/or devs would have stopped with the exclusive deals.

Anyway, this doesn't matter for me. I'm just curious if there's a change in opinion about money hatting on PC because it has been happening a lot the past 5 years.

Oh and to answer your question: of course you're living on another planet. The one where Steam Deck doesn't exist. :p

My policy for these types of things will always be the same: If a company is making profit doing something they will continue doing it, if not they will stop. Steam keeps getting new ports (almost everyone day and date and some actually exclusive meaning they don't release on consoles at all like) because they keep making money (or releasing only on console no longer generates enough profit to exclude PC). EGS keeps getting nothing because companies are not profiting from it. Hell just look at Ubisoft and how much they tried to not release on Steam, and look how that went in the end
No, really I assure you everyone still hates the EGS and its exclusive. The games still bomb everyday there, most publishers are no longer even trying to release their games on the EGS, almost every "current" exclusive was signed years ago (and again that's not talking about the average metacritic of almost every EGS exclusive which clearly shows the publisher/dev knew they had a failure in their hands, meaning they basically tricked Epic to pay for literal shit)
And lastly, we have actual receipts that show almost no one is bothering with the EGS: the yearly year in review. Even with Fortnite and Genshin you can clearly see the decreased spending. You can't deny facts
Square is the only one still making actual console exclusives and EGS exclusives, but even in these 2 cases let us wait and see because despite everything even they are in this industry to make money

Or tl;dr Alan Wake Remaster still didn't generate profits for Remedy and that one also released on consoles. That should tell you how well the EGS and the Epic Publishing label are doing

Sadly not. But it was definitely a lot less than 40% of the voters who actually bought games on EGS.

I honestly expected this number to be lower nowadays. Everyone knows that almost every exclusive is timed and will end up on Steam sooner or later. Also, the Steam Deck released and Epic has been sparser with coupons.

FWIW, Dead Island 2 has been the #1 seller on EGS the past several days and is #7 on the most played. My guess is it's sold a few hundred thousand copies and is in the tens of thousands of CCU. We've known for years some exclusives sell well on EGS (i.e. Borderlands 3, Snowrunner and Satisfactory) so this isn't super surprising. And look at it this way: Saints Row was a top seller at one point too. :smart-thinking-blob:

I did buy Dead Island 2.

For 35 bucks on reddit via AMD bundle. That"s better price than it will have on steam in a year, so I decided to get it.

I don't like it, but it probably did sell well enough on Epic. For what it's worth, it took about 7 weeks for Saints Row 2022 to reach 1 million players.

That's the kind of platform split I expect, around 15% so 150,000. Not bad but far from a runaway success.

I mean, from time to time they will have a successful one due people's excitement lol It's not bad, what surprises me is that Zombie genre still has such a strong hook.

I always wondered if these pr sales announcements include promo copies from AMD GPU’s. My friend gave me his AMD bundle when I built his pc and it came with an EGS copy so im curious if im included in that 1m lmao

Dying Light freebie was redeemed 15 million times and had 760k peak concurrent. It actually beat Fortnite on the EGS charts one day, so that might give an idea as to what Fortnite does.
This description reads like they’re counting the CCU of both games across all platforms and not just DL1 on EGS. The vast majority is definitely DL1 on EGS though lmao.

Assuming that's true, the Steam version of Dying Light peaked at about 29.5k on April 8 and Dying Light 2 peaked at about 6700 on the same day, so EGS was still >720k.

Also I base my Fortnite guess off a document from the Apple trial from February 2020 that showed Fortnite peaked at about 613k one day. That was right before the COVID lockdowns and since Epic said Fortnite has declined, I assume it's probably around its pre-COVID levels. My best guess is Fortnite PC peaks at around 600-700k.

Some might, some won't

I expect all deals will go back to devs at some point but some wont come, specially those that have a heavy online component as they might not be able to survive long enough (see Rumbleverse)

I don't really care about online focused games, but it would be great to buy games like Alan Wake 2 one day without giving a cent to Epic. It would also allow these games to appear in bundles or humble choice.

I'm not sure why Epic would allow such thing to happen, but if they do, all the better for us. 😉

True. At the same time, I don't think the console versions were doing huge numbers on the 760k day.

Getting into publishing right now when we are in a time of consolidation was an interesting choice. Not saying I want consolidation or that I do not want to see more publishers per se, but it is clear the bar between success and failure is high these days, and this is likely magnified the more money is thrown into the mix. Epic could take awhile to see any real return from their investment into publishing.

What is more, if the rumors about some devs grumbling by Epic's lack of support is true, and we see more scenarios like Rumbleverse, then they will be less competitive as a publisher than initially assumed.

I mean looking at how you can count Epic's publishing deals with your fingers, and considering how much they paraded themselves as the saviors of indies or how "developers would kill each others to get such a good publishing deal", I feel like the label isn't doing so hot already
