Was taking a look at SEGA's financial reports for 2023, a few things worth noting:
  • Sonic Frontiers sold over 3.2m units
  • Persona 5 Royal sold over 1.7m units in the new platforms
  • One key point is continuing to expanding support for multi-platform releases and global launches
  • They're aiming on 12 multi-plat/global releases in the 2024 fiscal year (including Sonic Origins Plus, the new Like a Dragon game that is between 6 and 7, Endless Dungeon)
  • They plan on continuing to release remasters, remakes, spin-offs or new takes on old games (Sonic Origins Plus, Samba de Amigo Party Central, Etrian Odyssey Origins)

And this slide in particular is interesting, basically they're saying they're achieving their goal of multiplat/global launches, and the next step is reviving older popular IPs (there was that leaked footage of a new Jet Set Radio last month, after all):

It's really good IMHO but also massive, even just the SP campaign, especially if you include the DLC. I wouldn't say it wastes much time, design-wise, it just needs a lot of it.
I love 4X and hybrid 4X/rpg games but it's impossible to play them past a certain point in life because of the huge time investment needed.
It's really weird when you think about it, they are games designed for adults but adults can't play them.

I tried Age of Wonders: Planetfall earlier, but I didn't like it because exploration was so extremely slow and most of the battles played out the same. Is Planetfall very different from 3 and 4?
I haven't played it in a long time, but I enjoyed AoW 3 a lot just playing skirmishes or whatever back in the day. I ended up really bouncing off AoW: Planetfall even though I was excited as I've been way more into sci-fi than fantasy aesthetics lately. Planetfall just wasn't very good, I think - everything was incredibly shallow and slow.

Stray Gods: The Roleplying Musical - The demo was really short around 15 minutes, it showed two different segments to try to not spoil what is going on.

I'm gonna say I'm intrigued by its story, the game felt like I was watching a musical on stage except I had and active role as choosing what the main character was going to sing.

The music was really good and I hope they can maintain it's quality through the game.

Rented Jedi Survivor via EA Pro, despite all the hubbub about its performance. It has to run great on 5800X3D and 3080TI, right?

Wrong.

First, there still are shader compilation stutters during the first cutscene and occasionally during gameplay. Annoying as hell.
Second, first 30-40 minutes the game ran at 60fps (aside from those stutters).
But then it dropped into fifties and...basically stays there for extended periods. Variable 50ish framerate on 60hz TV with vsync enabled is an annoying-as-fuck stutter city. And of course, GPU is not fully utilized at all, this is purely game optimization problem.
Does the game look nice? Yes. Does it look so much better that it should run like shit compared to games like Stray, Atomic Heart or Dead Island 2 (all running the same engine) ? No.
But hey, at least I haven't had any crashes yet (in the first hour of playtime).

Anyway, here are couple shots, epic preset with RT on, 1620p with FSR quality

Is there an option I missed in Steam to not fucking auto open on startup and semi glitching ?
I have no problem with, even desire for, Steam loadig on startup. My issue is before the new big UI update it loaded in the background, minimized, now it's YOLO let's take the full screen. And if it wasn't already shit, it's blank black fullscreen because loading the store is hard.

...
Yeah no, it's even more glitchy. I can't access the upper menus row, the green what's new doesn't open what's new and my best bet is to close and re-open Steam. Which is, stupid as hell for a soft you want to auto load.

I may have gone out of bed on the wrong foot, but these clickbaity pos pieces are really tiring. Shit up several paragraphs of obvious observation is obvious, Sherlock, modify reality and history to fit your fucking piece (no, Casey, I know you are obviously the keeper of truth for Kotaku but EVERY big AAA release being unplayable wasn't the norm before.
And put the blame on players, because duh, it's always those insane players fault.

Disclaimer : I just skimmed through this thing, couldn't really suffer reading it. It may say something totally different that I accuse it of, which would be me jumping the gun. No, I won't read it attentively.

it's actually a pretty good article
You win. I will read it with attention.

PS. Damn you ! :so-good-blob:

Edit. Meh, ok, you got to reach the last two paragraphs to get any form of useful take. It's capitalism. Capitalism sucks.
Which I have no issue with. It's still a big word count to get to a relatively basic answer.

Fuck giving Kotaku any clicks.

Same shit happening to me, I can't even close it with the X, I have to close steam completely and relaunch lol

Looks like Hoyoverse is now doing a bit of an astronomy documentary on the side
I feel like this is both extremely useless and brilliant. Using your big AAA release to educate people.
Beginning to really like those people.

And no devs will use it, as it doesn't benefit consoles.
Compression apparently requires tensor cores, which AMD and therefore consoles don't have, but decompression seems to be done using standard matrix multiplication, which every GPU supports.

If that is so, then devs can encode the textures once on their side, and every target platform benefits.

Don't burn yourself out with all that optimism

standard matrix multiplication, which every GPU supports.
I'm actually not at all sure about that anymore.

AMD has two architectures: CDNA (for compute) and RDNA (for gaming). The former definitely has matrix cores, but I'm not so sure about the latter anymore. I kinda assumed the usual matrix multiplication was needed for rasterization, but in fact I don't know.

Bottom line is I'm not familiar with GPU architecture and the maths involved in rendering, that's not at all my domain, so I shouldn't just assume stuff.

If someone is familiar with this, I'm interested in whether they think Nvidia's NTC decompression can be done on any GPU.

LudoNarraCon demos I played:

Both of these are more visual novels than anything else, but with extremely polished visuals and presentation. looking forward to the full game

Another visual novel with very polished presentation and animation. Not really a fan of the character designs, but the setup is interesting enough.

Seems promising, though maybe a bit too fetch-questy for my taste; don't love some of the character designs (did Hermes really have to be an overweight guy in a tiny Speedo?)

My most anticipated demo here, but I found this kinda disappointing; the visuals and presentation are excellent, and the story seems promising, but I couldn't figure out how to progress and I think there may have been a bug that kept me from interacting with an object needed to progress the story? idk

Updated Steam search:

Can now search by developer, publisher, franchise, and by tags. Plus it is apparently more forgiving for spelling mistakes, but unsure how that pans out.
