Alan Wake 2 is only $50 on PC compared to $60 on console.

It's a nice gesture since they don't have to pay a platform commission on PC. They could have easily got away with charging $60 on EGS. Regardless, I'm renting it on console so the only thing Epic will get from me is telemetry data. :shrugblob:

Edit:

Why is Alan Wake 2 a digital-only release?

There are many reasons for this. For one, a large number of have shifted to digital only. You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console. It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only.

Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $59.99 / €59.99 and the PC version at $49.99 / €49.99.

Finally, we did not want to ship a disc product and have it require a download for the game — we do not think this would make for a great experience either.
I guess I'm not renting it.

Would be like $45 if it was on GMG and full priced :p

But I think i'll wait to see if there's Steam version eventually.

Awesome game, but you can tell their giveaway budget was slashed compared to prior years.

jesus I know some people had limited expectation for a AW2 success but even them would have never though the game would end up being digital only
Epic published a physical edition of Alan Wake: Remastered. Despite all the flowery language about how AW2 being digital only will help YOU, the consumer, I'd guess it didn't sell very well at retail and they have a lot of left over stock and don't want to repeat that with AW2.

That's true. I still think a Steam (and GOG) version will happen as Steve Allison said they would be exclusive for "a long time" and not permanently, but you're looking at several years.

I'm a VERY patient gamer 😋

Also, by waiting for a self-published Steam version, at least my money goes to Remedy and not to Epic. I will not support their quest to lock PC games to their shitty store in any way.

The fact that Epic doesn't bother to make a retail version for AW2, proves once again that they have no issues taking people's choice away if it benefits them one way or another. The €50 price on PC is only meant to push as many buyers towards EGS as possible. I hope people at least consider this before buying the game. No doubt other publishers are following this experiment with lots of interest.

The giveaways this go around have been really disappointing.

Shitty coupons, shitty giveaways, hardly any coverage in the press or forums of the sale and a "please buy me" price for Alan Wake II. Almost like the wheels are coming off this store.

The wheels will never come completely off, but it'll continue to trudge around with its 5-10% market share.

Also I was only half joking about the FTC fine affecting giveaways. There was a newsletter from The Verge several weeks ago that mentioned Epic's revenue as a whole has declined primarily due to lessened interest in Fortnite. It was "only" $4 billion in 2022 for the entire company (down from $4.7 billion in 2021) and they were grossing over $5.5 billion back at Fortnite's peak of 2019. They also spent $1 billion last year (half of which was likely due to the FTC fine).

Also Epic freezed hiring several months ago. The article also says they were spending less on user acquisition which may refer to the giveaway budget getting cut.

As the federal reserve has raised interest rates the past 12 months, the era of free money is over (for now) so they aren't as likely to spend as much for bigger games.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that it is Jerome Powell's fault this year's giveaways sucked.

I'm always up for more zombie co-op shooters because there are simply not enough GOOD co-op games, but this game's first impression isn't the best because the framerate drops hard on this trailer and it reminds me a lot of Back 4 Blood which I eventually disliked.

Fortnite's new season launched this weekend and I have been tracking on its concurrent playerbase. It peaked at ~2.1 million concurrent on Friday afternoon. Keep in mind this is only people who are actually in a game and does not account for people who are sitting at the menu for whatever reason. I would guess about 30% of the concurrent userbase is in game, but not currently playing based on similar numbers for Rocket League. If that were the case, then the peak concurrent for the new season would be in the 2.7-2.8 million concurrent range.

Massive? Yes. Down significantly from their peak when they were doing >8 million? Also yes.

Changing topics: I've been reading posts online about EOS screwing up the Steam version of Payday 2. I also read that the sun will rise tomorrow morning.

I wonder if Counter-Strike: GO/2 would overtake Fortnite within the next year? I could see it if it continues growing like it has.
Maybe in concurrent users when it first launches, but likely not over the long term. CS2's release will be massive as a ton of casuals will play to see what the hype is about, but it'll eventually level off. I think CS2's launch will be in the 2-2.5 million concurrent range. Also Fortnite is available on every platform (except iOS lol) while CS2 is PC only.

Additionally, concurrent users only show one piece of the puzzle. Fortnite has around 70 million monthly users while CSGO "only" has 27 million.

So, looks like PAYDAY 2 added EOS into the game and now is broken and without many features.

I guess forcing crossplay (EOS) on PC in all multiplayer releases is their new goal.
Sometimes I wonder why devs patch out something that worked well to something that doesn't

Most probably because of a money bag...

It's probably a requirement to participate in Epic's giveaways.
Not quite but close. We know due to the battle of the Tims, that multiplayer games that release either sameday or later on EGS (if it's first EGS it doesn't apply) if they have multiplayer they must support "store crossplay". And the faster way to do that is to throw in EOS.

In a few communities I frequent the reaction to the ROG Ally has been mixed.

For people who know their way around Windows, perhaps have a HTPC or controller-focussed setup, it’s an incredible device.

For everyone else it’s been a nightmare. System onboarding has been… problematic.

A lot of the media have been hyping this up as a “Deck killer”, completely blind to the fact that the user experience of Windows on one of these is challenging.

I’m expecting a lot of returns/open box sales of this device. Asus and all the other OEMs looking at making a device like this will have to think very carefully about the user experience of the next model.

That is not surprising for me at all. I was an early adopter of these handheld devices (owning both the first GPD Win and the first Indiegogo Aya Neo). Windows on such a small screen always has been a hassle at best or completely unusable without attached M&KB at worst.
SteamOS has been a real game charger for this form factor.
