Has Konami detailed anything about the MGS collection, specifically how the Solid games are being done? As in, native or emulated? I suppose MGS1 could be based on the original PC version from way back, and 2 and 3 could be based on the PS360 remasters.

Would be nice to know.
I don't think they've gone into much details, but we do know that MGS2 & MGS3 are the HD Collection versions (as said in the trailer). That suggests a port to me, as I don't think emulation of Xbox 360 or PS3 is far along enough to allow for a commercial release, and I think it's fair to say that Konami are not going to make their own in-house 360 or PS3 emulator.

And they won't emulate the PS2 versions because that introduces a number of issues, such as pressure sensitive buttons, that the HD Collection version has already addressed. And we don't know what modifications they need to make to the game's FMVs to remove copyrighted historical footage.

Seems the most straightforward way to do that is to port the Bluepoint ports to modern systems.

MGS1 is a bit of a crapshoot. They've got the PC version they could port, or they could be emulating a modified PS1 ISO with modern button prompts.

But in all honesty, there's a pretty valid justification these days for just "porting" PS1-era games to Unity (a la Final Fantasy IX) given that the source code is usually lost or poorly documented if it even exists.

I reckon the MSX/NES games are almost certainly emulated.
PS3 HD collection MGS1 was PS1 emulated version from PSN store so probably here same low effort as well.
MGS1 wasn't in the HD Collection.

I think you're talking about the Legacy Collection, which included the HD Collection but MGS1 wasn't part of the PS3 HD Collection, but a separate game in that pack which contained:

  • MGS1 (PS1 emulated on PS3)
  • MGS HD Collection (PS3)
  • MGS4 (PS3)

Splitting hairs, I know, but I don't think this is the same thing. The Legacy Collection only released on PS3 because it contained MGS1 and MGS4.

The Wonderful One: After School Hero is released.
Can be purchased as a standalone game

but it's included as a "free" DLC in The Wonderful 101: Remastered deluxe edition.
It's curious how PlatinumGames is pushing this game with some new DLC -three in few weeks- with no promotion and shadowdropping it, when seemed buried not long ago. Weird movement imo.

For all 3 of them:

Yoooo they have japanese voices too!
It's really important especially in MGS2 where a lot of things were missing in the western dub, the final dream would be to have a new fanmade translation

Oh weird, I thought it would all be incorporated into one app. Wonder if this is just the standalone releases or if some of the bonuses will be available separately. Also, Steam achievements listed for MGS1! Might not be emulated after all.

Talking about voices. I hope this is an error

and Metal Gear gets all local voices. Because one of greatest things about MGS1 it was dubbed with spanish voices. Everybody in Spain played it with Alfonso Vallés voice on PSX version.

"Regional versions of the titles are available as additional downloads."

They are really putting a crazy amount of efforts into these it seems

Right?! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up for MGS4 but....

But it begs the question: if this isn't a quick cash grab then why are they trying to get MGS back into the spotlight now, after all this time? Could they have MGS6 in the works, whether internally or externally?!

Kinda silly, but I don't know why you'd play these games with a keyboard and mouse anyway. MGS2 and 3 would be especially bad with it considering how much they rely on analogue movement.

Yeah, these games have borderline archaic control schemes designed with a controller in mind. I'm sure someone could make it work on keyboard if they really wanted to but I can't imagine why they would.

MGS2: Substance on PC has really terrible keyboard and mouse controls. I remember the instruction manual saying something like "it may sound awkward to use, but you'll get used to it!"

So don't go into any Direct where they don't say they're going to announce a new Switch expecting them to announce a new Switch.
I wasn't expecting anything, but the strong game proposition is painful for someone who doesn't want to buy a machine on life support :so-good-blob:

Is MGS3 Remake not reason enough?

I panic-bought the first two on GOG when they got delisted everywhere last year. Maybe I should check it out for shits and giggles.

Maybe but if there's one game in the series that can stand on its own it's MGS3. They really don't need to release such a high effort collection just to drum up interest in it. It's probably best to assume that's it for now, though. If they actually rerelease MGS4, then I'll take out my conspiracy board lol.

Vol. 2 will be Peace Walker, Portable Ops, Revengeance and maybe Acid games. No way they touch MGS4.

I don't think that's the point, most people would play them with controller anyways but what this tells me is they're doing the bare minimum to port these games to PC. Other games with no KB/M support include No More Heroes 1,2 and the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection and all of them not only didn't have KB/M support but also didn't have any graphics options and you couldn't change the resolution either (you had to force your preferred resolution through steam launch options). My money would be on this being the case for this collection as well.

Look at the MGS1 footage in the trailer, it's just some pixelated, emulated shit. It's going to be low effort ports for sure, as sad as it is.

Possibly. That thought did cross my mind.

Or they (rightly) realised that keyboard and mouse controls would be a complete and utter shitshow, even compared to something like Ninja Gaiden, that they decided to not bother.

It's Konami so caution should be the default stance, but at the very least we should wait and see.

He's right, you know.

Is it too early to start suggesting July thread titles

That’s a stretch. A limited edition PSN freebie with one retailer doesn’t really count as included with the HD Collection. The article you linked doesn't even mention it in the games included section.
Well... don't really care it was part of it for some retailer and Konami made it sloppy which was my point :upside-down-face:

But hey who's with me MGS collection on Steam it's awesome!

I thought the same thing but a few days ago there was something that came out about how they had it running on X360 back in the day. I always assumed the codebase was a mess because of the hack job they had to pull to get it running on PS3 (an installation for every single act isn't exactly normal lol) but if they actually considered a 360 release back in the day then anything's possible.

I know people like to bring up stuff like references to blurays, dual shock and iPad as reasons why it couldn't happen but I don't buy that for a second. If they haven't lost the codebase and the original assets, then that stuff should be trivial to edit or cut out. It really wouldn't be an obstacle to a rerelease if they wanted to do one.

Look at the MGS1 footage in the trailer, it's just some pixelated, emulated shit. It's going to be low effort ports for sure, as sad as it is.

They might also have simply used old promo footage they already had lying around instead of capturing new one. These games are being rereleased for the umpteenth time. It's not that hard to imagine. I think it's too early to assume anything one way or the other.

Or they've made a conscious decision to render MGS1 (or at least its trailers) in a low resolution because PS1 games look awful in HD and they were trying to capture the retro feel.

Or it could just be a junk port. Who knows? It's Konami!

I don't really think the resolution of a game has any bearing on whether it's emulated or not. Pretty much every PS1 emulator made in the last 20 years lets you change the internal rendering resolution with no issue.

88 metacritic for FFXVI. Pretty good.

Higher than both FF7R (87) and FFXV (85)

They keep getting better n better :P so that means Rebirth will be 90+

Konami totally botched the Steam Store page for MGS Master Collection. Wonder how they fucked it up? It's live on PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace and Nintendo eShop.

Two things:

Whenever I have a controller plugged into my PC recently, it refuses to turn off the monitors or go to sleep/initiate screen saver. Is this related to Steam input? It does it even if i have no games running.

Love to see all these games coming to Steam!! But Star Ocean 2 reminded me we never got SO5. And I know everyone says it's pretty poop, but I still would have liked to experience it for myself...

Plus well you know...

Fuck, my local retailer will be having a 20% off launch sale on FF16 tommorrow, making the price very much cheaper than standard price. Fuck me. The review scores doesn't make it better.

Im curious if Im gonna become a double dip sucker after all tommorrow.

I finished MGS2 PC version back in the day on keyboard like three times. Just WSAD and numpad, with space used for first person, Q and E for inventories, somehow it worked fine for me.

But these days I am controller only PC gamer so...never again

talking about controllers I'm at the point even with keyboard + mouse only games I use PS Nav controller -with third party PC drivers like SCP Toolkit driver installer- + Xpadder to remap WASD,etc.. keys to controller + mouse.

Is the best way to play shooters and aim games, and isn't against anti-cheater apps cause you're still using mouse to aim. I cannot stand use kb to move.

Oh my god, that looks perfect for my ideal setup... But most games I play won't take simultaneous mouse and analog stick input.
