Oh my god, that looks perfect for my ideal setup... But most games I play won't take simultaneous mouse and analog stick input.
It's so great. Even some brands tried to release something alike_
But imo Sony did a great work with PS Nav controller copying Nintendo Nunchaku Wii's controller.
PS Nav is very ergonomic, robust and not heavy and with drivers it's recognized as a 360 controller.
The thing is not the game use analog stick + mouse. Is kb+mouse then with Xpadder you map kb keys on PS Nav. f.e. W or ↑ key can be mapped as up analog stick, etc...

f.e. this video:

this guy uses some other software to remap, but I think Xpadder is enough and don't need install or malware.
I was using this method since 2019 when I watched this video, Is much better setup than kb+mouse : P, and if you think you miss keys, you can always get a mouse with thumb numeric keys and map keys there.

In preparation of a big sale, I always try to add games to the wishlist which I aim to get with a budget in mind. This time I am having a real trouble: there are way too many interesting games that I want to pick up during the sale. I have been adding this and removing that during the past 1 hour. Money is surely limited, but time is another problem as I will not be able to start playing them soon. Now I just feel frustrated, say "fuck it" to the store page and open a game to start playing.

Man, overabundance of entertainment.

Crymachina got release date.
October 24th.

I sure hope this has better gameplay than Crystar. Cause that one had really cool vibes, visuals and story but my god was the game play an incredibly frustrating let down I pushed through cause I really liked the rest (And I'm not entirely sure it was worth it).
And this one is looking to have similiarly cool vibes and visuals (probably story too), but hopefully they didn't forget to hire an actual game designer this time...

Yep, I really don't expect more than a Crystar with a new skin and new waifus. I'm not saying this in the worst way, if the game allows me to spend an entertaining action time without worries and with nice looking graphics, I don't see it badly, japanese AA assembly line game.
The worst thing will sure be the price (I bet 60$ the base game 75$ deluxe edition with "lingerie" dlc costumes).

Back in November 2022 Valve co-founder and owner Gabe Newell spent “an undisclosed sum” buying a bunch of stuff from billionaire explorer Victor Vescovo, who a few years earlier had funded development of the Triton 36000/2, a submarine in which he completed the “Five Deeps” series of explorations, which saw him pilot the craft to the bottom of all five of the world’s oceans.

Image: Triton

He didn’t purchase it personally; instead the sub, it’s accompanying surface vessel and three robot landers (collectively known as the HES, or Hadal Exploration System) were bought for a company Newell owns called Inkfish, an oceanic exploration firm whose first mission is going to be taking a deep dive into the waters off the coast of Curaçao and performing research with academics from the US, Norway and Australia.

Obviously a parody account, but Tactica is hosed. At least they have the Game Pass money to fall back on.

Mario RPG and Tactica releasing same time.

Alan Wake 2, Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2 all releasing nearly same time too.

Really sucks for all 5 of those games as everyone will still be playing Starfield. Hopefully they don't flop too hard.

Buy a gamepad to play like a real yakuza/detective/etc., a boon of PC gaming since inception was using different devices, from wheels & flight sticks (consoles often didn't/don't support) to gamepads. Classics wouldn't boot without one. What's next, whining for Alyx/PC VR games kbm support? Lol. Chances are they will technically work, with shit controls like the original MGS2 PC, but if not, whatever really, use Steam Input or similar to make a profile for your niche kink :shrugblob:

Graphics settings or whatever are a completely different topic and something to look at on a case by case basis too, what graphics settings would 2D games have beyond matching your aspect ratio (and naturally having black bars for older games with art made for other aspects), what could you even increase without remaking a game like some random PS1/2 era JRPG and what would you care to reduce if it runs fine on 20 year old computers for example :shrugblob:

And no, their gameplay isn't similar to MGSV, have you even watched footage of something like MGS1-2 before and if not why do you care about them now?

Man this whole "idc it doesn't have KB/M support, the games were meant to be played with a controller anyway" is such a silly statement. It's not about KB/M support, is about not even doing the bare minimum to port the game to PC. If it doesn't have KBM support most likely you can also expect

  • No graphics options
  • No resolution change (let alone ultrawide support)
  • Locked FPS

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised that every time you would try to call mei ling to save the game the game would go: "Now saving progress, please don't remove your Playstation Memory Card™ or turn off your console"

Yes, I'm happy the games are coming to Steam, but just because I'm happy about it doesn't mean I'm just gonna accept some lazy ass ports. Look at the PS exclusives PC ports, people would have bought them regardless of quality, but they still went above and beyond to have feature-rich ports (even if TLOU1 was a trainwreck on PC).

Konami wants you to give them $60 of your hard-earned money to buy this collection. Don't be a blind consumer, demand some semblance of quality, guys.

(context: I've played MGS V; that's all I know of MGS)

I'm very curious to learn what voodoo is supposed to happen in old MGS gameplay that makes it impossible to adapt to M&K.

I've heard similar claims about Souls and Tekken and NRS fighting games before getting into them; after largely more than 1K hours playing those with M&K, I now know those claims to be absolute ignorant nonsense (given proper anti-ghosting keyboard and 5+-button mouse, of course), even with the barebones level of support offered --- as evidenced by the inhuman default controls which I refuse to believe were ever playtested by a carbon-based lifeform.

For a solo third-person stealth/shooter, I find that notion much harder to credit a priori than for the above.

TLDR: I'm pressing X to doubt. On my keyboard, if you please.

My guess is that they didn't bother to include kbm controls because that would take a little extra effort.

I also played MGSV on PC back in the day and beat that entire game with kbm and loved it (I love aiming and shooting with a mouse a little too much lol). It was also a pretty solid (hehe) port since it ran relatively well in my old core 2 quad, gtx 560ti PC.

This collection will probably need some help from the modding community to add all the stuff that should come with PC games normally.

Honestly, they just have really convoluted and borderline archaic control schemes (some more than other). Like I said the other day, I'm sure someone motivated enough could make it work with m&k. You'd just be missing out on stuff like analog movement and, in the case of MGS3, some actions are actually mapped to different pressure levels on the face buttons. At least, that was the case on PS2. I'm not sure if that's even a feature on modern controllers anymore tbh.

But yeah, I'd never want to play these games on a keyboard in a million years. I can't imagine that control scheme working well or being comfortable. At least for MGS1 and 2. I think MGS3 had a more typical third-person shooter control scheme as an option in the Subsistence rerelease to go along with the third-person camera but I could be getting mixed up with some of the later games. It's been like a decade like I've last played it.

Personally, I'm not going to assume anything about the port quality based on a store page that wasn't even meant to go live yet. I can see an argument for why they wouldn't bother implementing mouse and keyboard controls but I also understand why that's a red flag to some. I'll hope for the best and reserve judgment for when we have more concrete details on the state of the games on PC.

some actions are actually mapped to different pressure levels on the face buttons.
That seems... like a cool but really awkward and impractical idea.

What kind of actions were those? Unless there is something intrinsically linked to levels of pressure in them, that seems like a pure gimmick to me.

I can't imagine that control scheme working well
That's what I don't grasp. If we were talking about a flight simulator, I'd sorta understand the very specific, intrinsic need for fine analog controls and stuff --- still no excuse for no support at all, mind you, but no matter how clever your keyboard scheme, you'll lose something central to the game....

...but we're talking about a third person stealth/shooter, a genre with hundreds of games whose needs are fully satisfied by WSAD-style M&K control schemes.

I can imagine that the original may have happened to use a weird control scheme. Fine. I can grant that thoughtlessly mapping that scheme to keyboard one-to-one might be an abomination. Double fine.

What I cannot imagine is that the game has needs so unique that they cannot be satisfied by an intelligent implementation of the same controls as other games in the genre. So I miss out on analog movement... why is that more important in this than in, say, Thief, or Splinter Cell, or Far Cry, or MGS5? Some actions are modified by pressure.... why can't they just be bound to one of the 100 buttons on the keyboard? Or mouse gestures, or something.

Of course, figuring out that "or something" can take a bit of work... so what? Heaven forfend porting a game should require any work.

I also understand why that's a red flag to some.
To me it's more than a red flag; I'm interested in the games, but I have literally fewer hours of experience on a controller than I have decades on the keyboard. No M&K => no buy.

I'm not completely unwilling to try something else if it makes sense in principle. If ever I get into flight sims, I'll buy a joystick; that's at the core of what is being simulated, after all. Racing sims? I'll buy a steering wheel; ditto. I just don't see how the same kind of exception can possibly apply to MGS3 and controllers. Maybe that's a failure of my imagination.

If the steam page comes back and it ends up supporting M&K, this will have been a nice troll...

I don't remember all the functions but, for example, you'd hold Square to grab a dude. Pressing it slightly would put a knife to his throat to interrogate him and pressing harder would slit his throat. It was kind of convoluted and it took me a while to really master all the functions. It worked once you got used to it but yeah, awkward and impractical isn't a bad way to describe it.

That's what I don't grasp. If we were talking about a flight simulator, I'd sorta understand the very specific, intrinsic need for fine analog controls and stuff --- still no excuse for no support at all, mind you, but no matter how clever your keyboard scheme, you'll lose something central to the game....

Again, I'm not saying it couldn't work. I just think it would be kind of unwieldy and awkward. It's not that the games' control schemes are complex so much as that they are... atypical. It's kinda hard to explain if you haven't played it for yourself, tbh. Also, all those games you mentionned have you controlling the camera. So you don't need an analog stick for precise movement. The first two MGS games have a fixed camera. These are old, arcade-y games with a top-down camera like this most of the time:

They don't play like typical third-person shooters. Funny you should mention Splinter Cell, though. Your walking speed is based on how much pressure you're applying to the analog stick, and controlling your speed is key in that game. On PC they have you controlling your walking speed with the mouse wheel. Weird as hell but I thought that was a clever solution to that problem and worked surprisingly well. I'm sure something could be figured out for MGS but yeah, it wouldn't translate one-to-one and I mostly feel like it would be uncomfortable to play on a keyboard. Then again, I prefer to use a controller most of the time so chances are you'd be fine with it. :shrugblob:

Anyway, I hope that was somewhat coherent. I'm super tired and edited this a bunch before posting. I really need to be heading to bed...

This leap logic that no KB/M support must mean bad port with no graphics settings is absurd.

At the very least, wait for the release or previews before reaching a conclusion. Jeez.

MGS2 Substance for PC had a shitty port and that supported KB/M. Well, I say “supported” Konami had to caveat in the instruction manual that you’d “get used to it”. It was a shitshow.

Some games aren’t made for keyboard and mouse, just as some games aren’t made for controllers. And the PS2 MGS games especially were not made for KB/M.

MGS3 had some of the most sensitive controls out of any console game that I ever played. Performing some of the functions (aiming, cqc) in the most desperate/important times throughout the game was almost an art form. The feedback was insane. That is a game that never had a PC port of any kind too so I'm curious for any mods that come out for it. And what kind of a port + how much work Konami (or whoever else) is really doing.

Can you use Steam input to emulate a keyboard with a controller?

Like, I use it to map keyboard buttons to a controller for games that don't have controller support. I wonder if you can do it the other way round?

Oh wow Steam emails you when you redeem a key on your account now. Seems a bit unnecessary but okay.
