All that talk of Windows 7 being deprecated is a little depressing. Windows 10 has still so many issues, forced updates in most editions and an absolutely terrible UI among them. There's also the fact that they have ramped up the built-in advertisement and distribution for MS products at the OS level and I really can't abide that. I've been using it on my VM for a while now and nearly a year later, I really can't bring myself to upgrade. I just loathe it :(.
There's always Linux. Steam Proton is making huge progress, from what I hear. If you really want an OS that respects your freedom, then neither Microsoft nor Apple are your thing.

Interesting. No, seriously.
I'm too lazy and I must take into account that if there is a non zero probability that I wipe my HDs, I should stay clear. But yeah, Win10 is lacking and I'm tired of it.

If you never touch the terminal on Linux, there's nothing you can accidentally do. As for using Steam Proton, it's literally backed into Steam. You just download the game, and press Play, Steam does everything for you.
Last I tried it (like a 1 year+ ago) the only issues where that different games ran on different versions of Steam Proton, so you had to switch back and forth in the games properties. I assume that's better now, as compatibility seems to increase.

I use a combo of Directory Opus to replace Explorer and Classic Shell to make a lot of the W10 annoyances go away.

Because 8 and 10 are pure trash, microsoft's botnet. Performance is terrible (this is masked by 8+ cores and ssd), ui is terrible, any basic action takes 4 times more steps than on a proper os.
Every update breaks half of the os, there used to be screaming and wailing, now just quiet moaning. That's why they keep that useless asshole nadella btw:

Billy, come back and make one last os for your grandkids and save us from that cancer.

I tried Linux, and the user experience was really not what I enjoy. Windows is still, for all its faults, what I like in terms of UX, but 10 is seriously challenging that. There's also the fact that awfully little of the software world is actually supported on it. I am pretty proficient with linux, used it for years and it's really never clicked.

I actually tried Classic Shell on my VM and it was alright but what I'd really want is a way to have Aero working again. Why they won't enable it when I understand it was half-implemented at some point, I will never understand. It's that rectangular design for windows with that huge, useless space at the top I can't really abide :p.

And yeah, I don't really buy that 10 is more efficient than 7. That OS as created on the ruins of their attempt to unify mobile and desktop and that kind of tells you a lot about why to avoid it already. Especially with Microsoft's everything-as-a-service undertones these days.

I had a similar experience with Linux, never clicked with it and never liked it tbh, I still had a laptop with an Ubuntu install until like 1-2 years ago though, mostly out of habit.
Nuked it after I tried to play on it while I was getting a new gaming PC and it just wouldn't work, reminded me why I hated the thing so much while I was actually using it to do uni stuff/work, so instead I nuked it and finished my ps4 backlog.

Linux is a tinkerer's dream and the UI can be really nice and made to look good, but the overall experience still relies heavily on CLI. At some point, when something goes wrong, you'll end up going down layers and layers into the OS's workings, and I'm just not up for that anymore. I am capable of it, but that doesn't mean I want to. The UX just doesn't justify investing the time when I find Windows to still be more enjoyable. 7 at least.

Wellll, I will have you know, young man, that I can be challenged sometimes. I installed a new HD for raid some years ago.
And formated the drive I wanted to duplicate.
In my defense, I would argue that windows drive management is not the best at clarity, very antiquated design, but still :anguished-face:
Does Linux handles SSD like a modern Windows ? I mean, does it detect it's an SSD and do not attempt to defragment it ?

Linux is amazing for work. Once you realise how you can use the terminal effectively, it's a dream for a lot of common work loads. I still work heavily with UI based programs, but the combination of being able to do so much via Bash, plus the absolute freedom to install anything I want easily, from userspace stuff, to kernel level things, allows me to use the OS exactly as I want. You can decide what UI you like, you can tweak it to work exactly as you want things to.

I avoid Linux for gaming, since in my experience the support from hardware manufactures is really bad. Windows is simply easier to use for gaming. It's great that Steam Proton is trying to change things for better, but I'd rather avoid having to rely on it if I easily can. For all the issues with Windows 10, since I only use the machine for gaming, I really don't care about all the problems.
But yeah, I'm curious about the linux experience. Does it handles SSD like a modern Windows ? I mean, does it detect it's a SSD and do not attempt to defragment it ?
Linux doesn't do defragmentation. Here's an explanation: Why Linux Doesn’t Need Defragmenting

Eh I only know my experience with it was terrible, shit simply not working while all the dependancies were installed and similar issues made me waste enough time that i'll never touch it ever again unless I'm paid for it.
And paid well.

There are collectors that would pay good money just for the boxes, never mind manuals and the game itself.
Dealing with ebay drives me nuts, people demand absolute perfection. I would rather get a quarter of max value and a reasonable person than deal with the hassle.

I'll see what has value and try to sell off that stuff.

One big issue is hardware support, as I mentioned. There's nothing that "Linux" can do about that, though, it's the manufacturers that need to provide drivers. With Linux that often doesn't happen for new hardware, leading to issues. Ironically, for older hardware, like old printers that are no longer officially supported on newer Windows versions, the open-source drivers are quite good, making them run fine on Linux.
So, yeah, the hardware thing is a valid complaint, and it's something I do warn people who try Linux on any random hardware.

Something that's been happening on this front is that more and more PC companies, like Lenovo for example, are selling their laptops and PC with Linux preinstalled. That might not sound so interesting, but it means that they also test everything and get the hardware companies to produce drivers. Even minor things like fingerprint scanners run well on Linux, and are natively supported for these newer devices

Lol, guess I'm throwing out my boxed copy of MGS2 for the PC bc it has lost all value.

Unless some fool here wants to display it?

Also note, I'm tossing all of my PC gaming big boxes and other sizes. If someone in the US wants something, I'll let them know what I have. Already tossed the majority of my PS3 game cases yesterday.
Id love to know whats in the list of pc games. Im not a collector per say but there are always older games im looking for that arent digital.

indeed it is a shame. pc gamers can't be trusted to let even a bit of whimsy into their life. they are better off sticking to snoozers like serious sam. ;)

I've been unable to log-in to the Steam mobile app for a couple of days now.
I tried everything I can think of, without any luck.

I saw people mentioning deleting the temporary files/cache of the app worked for them.
Well, I did so, and not only I'm still unable to log-in to the app, but now I don't even see the changing log-in codes, so if I close Steam, I will be unable to log-in back. :confounded-face:

Any suggestions?

It's probably not what you want to hear, but I suggest buying a newer phone. There are some great phones that are dirt cheap nowadays. My former phone, Lenovo P2, is going for $100 used in perfect condition, and that's taking Poland's 23% VAT into consideration. 8 core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, 5.5" screen, 5100 mAH battery, Android 7 (Vulkan support, can use PSP emulator easily) - amazing value.

Maybe it is a good time to write down a few backup codes on a piece of paper.
Yeah, I did so already.

It's extremely annoying.
I can't log-in to the app. People suggest deleting the app, and installing it again. I can't, because I tried running the file from the latest version, and it doesn't run (I assume because maybe my phone doesn't have the requirements).
I used the mobile app for years without any problem, up until 2 days ago. I just use it to get the log-in code, and validate the community market transactions, nothing more.

Is it too much to ask that an app I use for years already would let me log-in to my account, instead of getting me back to the same screen over and over again, without any message?
Requiring a mobile app to do most things, and then having it be so unreliable like this (at least the android version) is ridiculous.

I think the only time I had to log back into the app was when I changed my iphone, don't remember if it was copied automatically or not by that transfer the iphone does

Stick a fork in it, Stadia is dead. Google made a number of fatal errors that ultimately doomed it:
  • I feel like using proprietary hardware/OS was a big mistake because developers were being asked to support yet another platform at a time when Sony and Microsoft were briefing them on their new platforms.
  • They limited the number of devices that could use it, creating barriers to entry for a platform that ostensibly sells itself on tearing barriers down.
  • They over-promised and under-delivered on performance and IQ.
  • And frankly, hubris has a large role to play. They thought people would buy into their vision of the future and people haven't, which is what happened to OnLive.

I feel like Amazon's attempt is going to get more traction on the virtue that Amazon has much more experience selling people content than Google, their platform is Windows PC-based so it opens up the doors to a lot more content on day 0, and they can integrate it into Prime to get an install base going from the start. But I don't think they're selling a complete end-to-end platform, and I reckon their thinking is they can bypass the hard work of established players and barge into the market on the virtue that they're a Silicon Valley giant.

Ultimately I still think cloud gaming is a feature not a platform. I feel those who integrate cloud streaming as an option into their larger platform are going to be the big winners in this area.
I think the main problem was just the model. Asking you to buy the games is OK, but when you are targetting a wide audience that doesnt really understand it, saying "Netflix but for games" is a much easier and understandable sale. Which is something that Luma (Amazon's model) seems to be doing from day 1.

Otherwise, I agree with your opinion. They tried to launch a Minimum Valuable Product into an ecosystem that wasnt there and poisoned the well itself with a horrible launch. Maybe that can show that creating Platforms that way is not a viable solution after we had some major failures.
For all its horror and all its glory Untitled Goose Game release went almost unnoticed on Steam.
It had a banner, it probably did quite OK lol

If I remove the Steam authenticator, and after the trade limitation is up (I believe it's 15 days), how will things work in terms of selling stuff on the Steam market?
Can I list items right away (I know on trades there's a delay), or are there limitations in place?
thanks

Just throwing an idea, maybe you could try using your wife's mobile phone (in case it's more modern than yours :p). At least you will be able to log in and continue selling cards...

She has... the exact same model as me. :)

Plus, I would still need to remove the authenticator from my cellphone, install it in hers, and that would still trigger a trading delay. :(

Man i wish every game had Steam workshop support. Makes it so much easier to add mods.

I started RE3 but it only has XBox button prompts and i use a DS4 and so im looking for a mod. Find one on Nexus mods but its been yonks since i logged in on there and im waiting on an email to log in so i can download it. Then i have to go through the steps to get it up and running. So much easier with Steam workshop.

Im also hoping to find a squeaky shoes mod for Nemesis like Mr X had.

Workshop isn't ideal though and depends heavily on how the game handles mods. For something like Bethesda games for example, it's downright trash. Mod Organizer is infinitely better for Bethesda games.

I was visiting the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels today (lots of dino skeletons, yay! 😋) when I noticed they are using Xbox Kinect for the interactive screens:

So it seems Kinect is useful for something after all, ☺

But when several other insiders heard about a second game ? I'm guessing it was Nocturne HD, just not on PC.
