Somewhat mixed first impressions. My nitpicks so far:

  • game version number is visible in game, hurts immersion for no reason
  • annoying launcher when starting the game that requires setting vulkan every time
  • I hate that I cannot freely control camera on controller (indeed you cannot look up at all when zoomed in, feels so restrictive..)
  • I had to force vsync via drivers, had tearing in intro cutscene despite vsync triple buffer being enabled in options menu
  • there is no possibility to set controller camera sensitivity, and default is too low
  • Also, no possibility that I can see to select toggle on right analog stick (to see interactive elements)
  • beard and hair color cannot be set separately - so beardless for me because dark blonde beard looks bad
These are all fairly small nitpicks, I realize that, but collectively they annoy me a lot and I am almost kinda tempted to just wait for updates. Almost.

Mmh, after a short session because character creation was pain, my two biggest gripes are camera rotation on fucking MMS, and more worryingly, the obnoxious lag in animation between clicking and the character finally moving. Not immediate enough.

why is this game so quiet? it's actually kinda annoying

I have the volume maxed out and it's still way quieter than most games are with the volume turned way down

Played for 3.2 hours in co-op. Everything is pretty great so far. (Playing with mouse/KB)

In the last battle we had a phase where enemy turn ends were very slow for some reason, not sure if that was connection-related or some other bug.

I had a few weird issues. Second time I launched it, Steam (and Discord?) vanished and the game froze on a black screen, not sure if the game did that or not. One combat one of the enemies just thought for a while and did nothing, which is fine I guess. I didn't have any real delays in combat before actions but there's a brief transition for any action out of combat that changes the camera angle (so conversations or inspections I guess).

Also yea it's quiet - I'm used to having to fuck with my volume because half the media I watch is apparently tuned for amps at 900% for some reason.

Oh, I played with mostly just gamepad, it worked better than I expected honestly. Control your current character with left stick, pan around with right, if you could lock the camera zoom or something it'd be nice. I'm not sure how to "hover" over condition icons in combat though

Game also really starts out the gate with the squig factor too

Brilliant

It was the only situation like that, truth be told so far I've been very lucky with the skill checks. It's bound to change sooner or later I'm sure.

Played for 4 hours. Despite knowing exactly what I was going to play and what I wanted to look like, I still spent 30+ minutes in the creator.

My very first roll was a nat 20(invesitgating the brine pool). I also failed to get the flaming sword from Commander Zhaik in the tutorial. I'm trying not to save scum, so I accepted it begrudgingly.

My only frustration so far is that when you take College of Lore as a level 3 Bard, it gives you Intimidation, Arcana, and Sleight of Hands... and if you have any of those skill already, you just don't get anything to replace it or the option the choose another skill. It's not a big deal - I'll just have to respec and choose something else at level 1, but it is annoying.

So far, I haven't seen a ton of differences since EA. The nautiloid/tutorial map has changed a bit, but everything else up to the Grove seems the same(though the cinematics seem to be less janky).

Perfs are all over the place, regularly 140, generally 100… but the Grove is all kinds of 30fps drops.
Dlss seems to help, but not enough. I suppose I will have to try settings on high.

And it’s hard as fuck. I was getting rolled over in the first place you find after the intro. Hope it’s partly due to adventurers being too squishy squishy at level 2.
I really liked the game telling me about the importance of positioning archers on high grounds, or the damage bonus while hiding… game 5 minutes after that, here is a crowd of angry mofos, I give you a small square room with nowhere to hide. Kthanksbye.
:sweaty-blob:

There are also bizarre maths, but maybe I just forgot some finer points of the rules. I have a 4-11 damage weapon, change for a 4-17. Game still tells me I do 4-11.

I've capped my FPS to 72 which is half my current refresh rate. It's running on Ultra/High settings and i didn't see the point of crazy fps in this type of game. Everything seems fine so far, i have no idea what i'm doing, i have nearly zero knowledge of the DnD 5e classes so i'm looking forward to annoying people with my suboptimal builds. :D

By people i mean the min-max'ers. Now you know there is someone out there wasting points on bad choices. bwah-ha-ha-haaaaa.

Game seems good. Don't even like some of the intro designs and find it a bit juvenile like other cosmic horror/hell type designs in other games but overall it's got a good cohesive look that doesn't look bad in the end and I guess you move on from that stuff soon (for now). It needs a Dragon Age Origins style third person camera, all the controls are there for it but mapped weirdly. It feels good to play, exploring or battling, there's some pop in during cut scenes switching camera angles (or if you use a low angle camera while walking around so don't do that I guess) and some very occasional visual glitches (using Vulkan, maybe I should stick to DX11) like momentary black squares here n there but other than that probably one of the most polished RPGs around that feel and look good. Can't wait to dive in properly.

Last night I played on my 1440p Monitor with KB&M, but how good is the game played with a controller? The 4K OLED TV with HDR on is tempting me, especially as you can scale up the font size a lot to help with my terrible eyesight.

Game runs perfect for me and has been very stable (no crashes etc..., like I see some have).

The main thing i am forcing myself to do is to never reload a save or redo a dice roll. My goal by the end of the game, is to have gone through it with all the consequences that happen from that.

...
That is not so bad. I spent about 4 hours actively in character creation and a couple of hours more of idling, trying to read up on stuff. It is difficult to balance combat prowess and skill check capability! I finally settled for a Seldarine drow draconic bloodline sorcerer with the stat breakdown 8-16-14-10-10-16 and proficiencies in sleight of hand, deception (charlatan), persuasion, insight (choice) and perception (drow).

I've been playing all morning, and having a blast. I finally have Karlach and she is fucking great! The game seemed to suggest she should be a Wildheart barbarian but I went with berserker. It just seems to fit her personality better. Plus, raging and throwing goblins at your enemies is pretty fun.

I had one fight I just straight up could not win, the one barb could solo my party even though it's all level 2. Although RNG in early D&D levels is king, too.

Targeting environmental stuff with the controller is a pain for sure. Also having stuff like bottles/rope with no apparent way to use them even when there is a puzzle that would be solved by the existence of rope is kind of annoying.

The barb in the first dungeon after intro ? I waited to hit 3 to get back there and it made a difference. That and some door shenanigans.

Now a fight that can be easy or hard but very fun was the Mephit fight. You go in laughing, Mephits bro, and you quickly realize the errors of your way. Fucking Mephits :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Yea that's the one. I also only had a party of 3 at the time which didn't help. I'm definitely going back for another go, although I stole all their food before leaving which I thought was pretty classic D&D stuff. There's also that back way (?) you can open with the stone on the rope but I couldn't find a way down without hurting myself so I need to revisit that too. I'm only a couple hours in still, will play more today for sure. I might tone down the FPS and the use some other settings to keep my card from heating my room up so much :grimacing-face:

Not really related but someday I hope WotC opens up 4th edition to open license stuff, I'd love to see a game even 1/10 this quality/size using that ruleset, I had so much fun making my 4th ed characters so distinct. The abilities really lend themselves to a video game format easily too, it's basically just a tabletop Tactics RPG (which is probably why me and my friends liked it so much)

Before entering the first dungeon, the "dank crypt", you can shoot the rope and make boulder fall through the floor.
What is that for, exactly? I thought I could go down that way but no dice, apparently.
I already explored the crypt, got Withers and killed the skeletons there.
Also, where do I get the trap picklocking thingy? I cannot open one sarcofagus because it is trapped and I am missing an item.

You can buy Trap Disarm Toolkits or find them, if I'm not mistaken there is a vendor in the Druid Grove that sell them. By the sarcophagus you mean the one in the middle of the room with a lot of traps? Even after you trigger the traps in the room, there is a button in one of the columns that disables the fire traps if you're quick enough.

Haven't been to Druid Grove yet. Yeah I think that's the sarcophagus I mean. But I pressed that button several times having no idea what it does, but the trap on the sarcophagus is still there.

Had a blast yesterday with my Buddy. We played 4 hours.

The only "issues" we had:

  • the movement is awkward and laggy
  • Why is there no Autojoin for dialogues! I know it can be awkward later if you go just shopping or so, but me or my buddy lost so many starts of cutscenes and dialogues because we didn't see the other starting it
- how about an icon flashing in the middle of the screen when a party member starts a dialogue?
- or the autojoin is only in the immediate region, or you could toggle it
- and tell us when a coop partner joins the dialogue!

Personally... I left without killing anything. I didn’t have the heart to smoke the mom.
But I might come back anyways. Couldn’t loot the body for the magic armor and couldn’t explore the upper floor of the lair because Astarion discretion only goes so far (it’s doable, I had done it but died without a fucking save right after).
And there is the matter of that mysterious magical lock :so-good-blob:

Now to decide how I want to handle the
raided
village. I’m not too keen on passing for a villain, but there is a litteral crowd of mobs there.

I’m unfortunately not able to go with the rpg flow in the game. Always second guessing the dev intention, and loading saves. It’s not great, given the slowness of the loadings.

I played for an unhealthy amount of hours yesterday, and I'm still in Act 1. I haven't even gone to the Goblin Fort yet!

This morning I discovered the joys of thievery. Astarion is now built entirely around robbing people. He has the Gloves of Thievery, the Smuggler's Ring, and can cast Fog Cloud. Then Shadowheart gives him Guidance on top of all that. He runs up to a merchant, casts Fog Cloud, hits Stealth, and enters turn based mode. Then I just pick them clean, and run away before they can look for me! With Gale eating my magical items, I need to keep a steady supply of them!

The toughest fights for me so far are any level 4 enemies who can attack me 3+ times per round, like the gnoll archers and the red caps. That named gnoll would've been the end of me too, if I hadn't been able to use my tadpole to make it kill itself.

I managed to beat the hag on my first go, though I knew to magic missile her doubles going in, which helped. She pushed Shadowheart into a bottomless pit though, killing her instantly. And then Gale and my PC were both knocked unconscious by environmental effects while the hag begged for her life. I was worried when the dialogue triggered with Karlach instead of my smooth talking bard, but Karlach had barbarian-specific threats of violence for Auntie, so I saved the girl and got the hag's hair in the end. I also accidentally raised the girl's dead husband as a zombie, and then let her take him to Baldur's Gate to look for a cure... I'm sure that will end well.

Oh, I also have a story to tell, a cautionary tale about not being me and above all not sharing my luck.

So the game wants me to create a special character. I hesitate between a sexy, let’s nickname them, dominatrix mama, and a hot kombaboula lady. There were never that many kombaboula in d&d games, and they are so hot and exotic… a little boyish hairstyle after, because every hot mama is hotter with a boyish hairstyle, I’m ready for adventure, and ultimately meet my hot mama.
hmm
oh
wait

Why are there so many kombaboula in this game, it’s like you can’t throw a rock without hurting a whole family of kombaboula ! Exotic and rare and mysterious my ass, if my hot mama appears I won’t even bat an eye now.

Thanks Larian :grimacing-face:

Should have gone with the hot boyish dominatrox.

just a random aside but every time I see people talk about spending forever in character creation it really makes me wish more CRPGs had an origin character system

I like the genre and think they're a lot of fun once i'm in one but as someone that doesn't enjoy that stuff starting them is easily the #1 reason why I so rarely play anything in the genre

being able to just grab an origin character and go is such a godsend, and as an added bonus it also solves another issue of mine of not really liking that whole "blank slate protagonist, imagine your own background" kinda thing
