Is it true that displayport is becoming obsolete?

I heard something about how it's being used less and less and stuff.

Again Sony will soon be in similar situation. Let's do some napkin math. Naughty Dog has 400+ employees. If we take Patcher $100K yearly salary per employee and bump it up a bit due to inflation and studio location to $120K we get $48M yearly expenses just to pay salary to ND. Add to that various other expenses like electricity and water bills, property taxes and benefits ND offers employees just to run ND could cost Sony up to $55+M. Now let's see if it takes ND 5 years to ship single game that is $275M just for ND studio expenses. Add to that at least $150M for outsourcing and other expenses (acting talent, composers, localization...) and at least $100M for marketing of a big budget premier Sony release and that is over $500M to deliver single game. If we take best case scenario and Sony sells all their copies via PSN where they keep all the money at $70 per copy they need to sell 8M copies to just break even. And TLoU Part 2 last numbers at mid 2022 were 10M lifetime copies sold. That is set the end of the generation where they have most users.

That is not sustainable and things will need to change. MS is looking at challenges like that now that they have sh*t ton of studios like ND and numbers simply don't add up. Something need to change. Especially because each new gen of consoles is basically reboot of the userbase. And things change drastically in those 6-8 years between consoles. More people are buying consoles to play Fortnite these days than 1st party exclusives.

A huge AAA game will cost a lot more when all is done (including marketing). We've seen the internal expectations for Insomniac - an incredibly efficient studio that could produce AAA for $150M a few years ago - and they are now closing on $500M themselves.
We don't know everything, but there's plenty of examples of big names where the total price was closer to a billion dollars, if not more. And no doubt that cost is growing very, very fast even with all the outsourcing that everyone does (and talk little about, giving credits to South East Asian contractors is not as cool as propping up the same aging devs that are "executive producers").

And it's not even a problem of potentially leading to ruin when a game doesn't reach 10 or 20M copies sold (looking at FF16 numbers I'm sure some people are puking in terror at SE)... it's also the why bother category?
You're a big company, do you really want to spend 1 or 2 billions and 7, 8 or 10 years into every AAA project?
There's just better opportunities, and I hope a lot of companies will make the right decisions before it's too late. Embracer is probably only the beginning.

I was bit conservative but point still stands. For a $500M investment Sony realistically expects something like $750M in return if not more. And that is not happening when you are selling thing to same amount of people. Nintendo is still managing it because their production cost is way below compared to the Sony and MS.

But with a big purchase like Activision for 69 billion. That was probably so large it forced upper execs like Nadella to step in and tell Phil Spencer to fuck off with his current strategy. Phil was probably told that the quickest and safest way for them to recover that 69 billion over time is by going 3rd party. And they'll scale back any loss leading projects they have at the moment. The gaming division basically cannot have any bad performing quarters like they have chasing Sony and Nintendo the last 10 years. The acquisition forced strict moderation for the gaming division. Laying off 1900 people was the first step and now its gonna be going 3rd party. This summer Xbox event will probably be the big push for Cloud, Mobile, Call of Duty and PS5/Switch 2 announcements like crazy.
That's what i think, they have invested way too much money into the publishing side now to tie it to a stagnating platform that is "losing the console war" outside of the US. I don't think they're shutting down the hardware just yet but limiting the potential reach of your giant publishing business has to have the money people at Microsoft questioning the whole operation. Especially since the concessions they were forced into for buying ABK mean a big bet on XBOX is weakened anyway.

In my opinion, Microsoft has a golden opportunity to turn the console industry on its head by making the next Xbox a PC, like a desktop version of the Steam Deck. Boot into the console UI but provide the option to exit to a full Windows desktop and run full PC games. The collapse of the budget and midrange GPU market provides a huge opening for anyone willing and able to launch an affordable gaming box.

Finally!! After signing up for beta testing like... a year and a half ago...? I finally got into the Skate beta.

I don't skateboard (well I tried 3-4 years ago and just realized that my ass's ideal resting state is above the ground, not on the ground...) but I'm a massive fan of skateboarding video games (it's basically the primairy reason I use RPCS3... for both Skate and THPS)...

While I think that Activision & Co. saturated the market back in the early 2000s, I really miss extreme sports games in general (...I like, basically bought them all... except for Kelly Slater's). Ubisoft's approach of anything-goes sorta-MMO wacky games doesn't resonate with me -at all- (I'm referring to Steep or Riders Republic)...

I really really wish sometime down the road we'll get THPS 3+4. Although I wouldn't mind a new one (just stick to the basics, don't add garbage mechanics and don't let the player get off the skateboard. Focus on great level design and... just release a new title every 3-4 years... what's with this obsession of adding new mechanics all the time?).

Really, these $500m AAA(A) games should be prestige projects, not the expectation.

Realistically, pinning your hopes on these kinds of games is like waking over a volcano on a rickety wooden bridge - one misstep or disaster and you’re in the lava.

The problem is the AAA arms race has set consumer expectations astronomically high. Every game needs to be better than the last one, and that’s just an absolutely fucking wild thing to want.

Cinema’s suffering the same issue - just gotta be bigger and bigger with each release. It’s the only way to suck all the oxygen out of the room and take all the money in some sick fucking infinite growth desire.

It needs to stop. Games need to come down in price, and they need to be lower budget too. I think the Sega model is one to admire here - quality games that don’t cost the universe to make.

Nintendo too, but they are in a unique position that would be hard for other studios and publishers to emulate.

But to make games like that you need to build studios. And to build a studio you need to stop firing 10-20% of your workforce every fucking quarter.

I think Nintendo will end up facing this problem too next gen. The next Switch will be more powerful, and even their fans will expect better graphics especially if they also go with a base 70 bucks for games

No not really. You can't be the market leader when the majority of games don't (or more like can't) release on your system. This has been nintendo's issue for almost 20 years now (yes wii is almost that old). They inhabit their own corner of the industry and sometimes it can be a really successful one, but idk how you can call them a leader when the majority of the industry can't rely on them at all. Just pretend for a moment that nintendo vanished tomorrow, how many 3rd party companies would be hurt by that vs if playstation disappeared?

I'm not trying to throw shade at nintendo or anything it's just how things are in this industry.

Ok now I'm about to throw a little shade at them. I genuinely want to see how people handle the first $70 mario party that only has a few levels like the switch version did, or 6 hour platformer like yoshi, or the half assed mario sports game they did on switch. Granted some of these sold far better than they should have at $60 but they become an even tougher sell at 70.

I'll watch what happens here with interest but extreme skepticism too. HDR has been a massive pain in the ass for companies to get right and the auto HDR windows uses is...hit or miss to put it kindly.

At the very least, this apparently works on DirectX 9 games. Meaning it actually does the thing AutoHDR was made to do but only for consoles, IE bringing HDR to older games.

PLanning to get an OLED monitor this year, so will be nice if this adds some effective HDR to older games. Not expecting this to be as effective as modern games that have been specifically made with HDR in mind, though
The biggest issue with AutoHDR (which I do frequently use, don't get me wrong), in my opinion, is that it has no concept of "UI", so it generally blows that out. This is problematic in two regards: (i) aesthetic/usability, in that it just looks bad and is far too bright for e.g. near-white UI elements, and (ii) lifetime for OLED, in case you play some game with AutoHDR and prominent, bright and persistent HUD elements for a very long time.

I don't know if this NV thing does better here, but I doubt it (since it was made for video, apparently, so I would assume it only uses pixel-level information, while to effectively deal with HuD you want some metainformation from the rendering process).

I bet a big reason why Microsoft/Xbox is making all these new changes is because of Nintendo.

Switch wound up being very successful. Everyone is expecting Switch 2 to be a massive launch later this year and it most likely will.

Microsoft will be the first one at the door as a 3rd party dev. They probably already have devkits and everything. Switch 2 will be in the Deck range in terms of power so there is dozens of new and old games Xbox can port. A lot of Xbox games run well on Deck. Its super impressive to see Forza Horizon 5 running at 60fps on Deck for example.

Many Switch 2 owners will want new games and ports for their shiny powerful handheld so publishers will make a killing. The first year especially as Nintendo's 1st party teams will only be able to do so much.

After 7+ years I bought a new phone yesterday, Galaxy S24, newer had a phone that new before. Cool thing is that the retailer store (Elkjøp) have a system for delivering older phones, so I actually managed to get the S24 256 gb cheaper than the original plan which was to ge the S23.

Holy fuck everything is now so much faster and with better battery life (had 2 charge my S23 the last few months twice a day, for many hours, to not let it die) which was one of the main reasons I needed a new phone.

Maybe the Nvidia system uses some AI tools to try to categorise which parts of the screen are "UI" and then it tries to normalise the brightness levels there. I could see that being fairly effective for most games, especially if it takes into account changes over multiple frames. At least I could see Nvidia attempting something like that, what with their massive R&D effort in using ML for all sorts of things.

Some new OLED monitors actually ship with tech that is supposed to detect static UI and reduce brightness automatically, so that would further help mitigate the lifespan issues

Playing Infinite Wealth and P3R on the Deck in bed before sleeping is going to be my daily routine in the foreseeable future.

I'm going to assume that Rebirth has been completely spoiled for people watching all these trailers.

I can't believe how much seems to be in this game and they got it out in 4 years. This is unbelievable.

Some demos impressions


My main issues were related to the way the character controls, while playing with a Xbox controller I wasn't able to activate the super jump after getting the upgrade, once I switched to keyboard and mouse the indicator to press the '1' appeared on screen. Still about the super jump, it felt a bit inconsistent, some times I could jump high and other the jump height was the same as if I didn't had it activate.

In the boss battle it seemed like if you took too much time to move out of the way of their attacks you are going to get hit, maybe making the character slightly faster can help.

It's more Toree! The demo is only one level but you can get an overall idea of how the game will be.

A Hollow Knight clone, in a wolrd where Silksong will release only after the heat death of the universe it can scratch that itch. I reached what seemed to be a boss but dropped the demo there as I was getting annoyed by the parry mechanics.

I really wanted to like because of how absurd it is but the game did nothing for me. The level I played was kind of bland and the wall jump when you're in cat form was hit and miss. The anime opening was cool though.

People will look at that and than at Suicide Squad and still say how Suicide Squad doesn't deserve anything below 8/10.

So possibly May 29th this year on PC for FFVII rebirth, that's pretty fast. Hopefully not an EGS exclusive this time.
That could be the date if Sqeenix was smart and worked on PC version in parallel with PS5 version. But they are not so I wouldn't expect PC version until maybe very late this year but more probably year later. We won't get FFXVI until all DLCs are out for example.
