I’m really in the mood for some more monster collecting, pokemon is in november though, I guess I could just buy either brilliant diamond or shining pearl although it’ll be hard to go back to either of those after PLA, oh well…

decisions decisions…

You can fault the PC gaming show for several things.
Showing too many indies is not one of those things.
Even if 599 of those don't interest me, that one game is worth it.

We have enough AAA(A) hypeshows.

What's with thte sudden "indie games aren't real games" rethoric?
Are we back in 2014?
Maybe it's timing, it's been two years since the last consoles were released and it's been a desert until now so the marketing is ramping up for the first AAA exclusives in ages? Which won't be out this year anyway.

A first look at the gameplay of Season: A letter to the future. Brought to you by the minds of Scavengers Studio. Documenting the end before a new beginning.

One last thing was FINAL FANTASY XVI trailer above which dated it to Summer 2023 for PS5 with no info about its exlusivity state exlusivity state.
Original reveal trailer in 2020 PS5 showcase had it as "Playstation console exclusive" also with "The following content is captured on PC emulating PS5" note , but the "console exlusive" part then dissapeared when trailer was uploaded on PS Channel , but still was on the same trailer in Square channel. Games industry Analyst "Piers Harding-Rolls" claimed when it was initially revealed that the game is
is a full exclusive for 6 months and a console exclusive for 12 months. This time with the new trailer on square channel doesnt even mention platforms at all and website now only mentions PS5 .

So who knows it will probably be in standard random square fashion ,
so leaving it in my summary anyway :-D

sooooooooooooooooooo overall pretty solid State of play for a PC gamer

Personally, I'm certainly not saying that, and I'll always wave the flag that (by and large) indies > AAA any day of the week.

However, the indie market is so so so extremely saturated now it is unreal, and simply showing up to the party isn't enough anymore like it was back in the early and mid 2010s. That's my problem with the PC Gaming Show, whenever it's showing a non big release the reveals are mostly 30-60 second clips, and that's just not enough anymore imo, particularly when it's done by the dozen.
If the show was shorter it'd help, or if it was paced differently then doing more deep dives could be warranted.

At least with the big platform holders whenever they do show indies there tends not to be lots of them so they stand out more.

It isn't too bad this time, XBox showcase is at 18:00 BST (19:00 in most of EU), and PC Gaming Show is at 20:30 BST (21:30 in most of EU).
With the PC Gaming Show being around 2 hours long, it'll end around 23:30 in most of EU.
Ok that's great, I assumed it was going to be like the old E3 timeline. Much better now.

The thing about Indies is, that the relevance, fun, gameplay-loop, hype, million-seller-potential isn't really tangible through trailers.

Among Us
V rising
Terraria
Minecraft
Valheim
Vampire survivors
Eco
Rimworld
etc.

Their success can't and couldn't be measured by trailers or hype. And if you show them side-by-side with visually equal games or even gameplay equal games (in a trailer) you can't pinpoint the million seller from the 50 seller.

It is not that Indies have no place at a "serious" game show, it is that you can't measure success until the game is out. And the console makers grab the diamonds a year or three after the release and show them at their show.

The same is true for AAA games, only that marketing and blind loyalty grants a baseline of sales and enough fanatics to give the illusion of relevance for even mediocre, bad, and forgettable AAA games.

I will do my usual with all these E3 type shows. Either watch the show the next morning and fast forward till I get to the next trailer. Or check out the announcements here and then watch the individual trailers on youtube.

The Nexomon games are very good. I've only played the first one which I liked quite a bit, and Extinction is supposedly a lot better.

Metroidvania mons

Digimon

(with Survive coming end of next month)

More mon games that I haven't played yet

Nexomon was ok, but I hated the self-aware meme robot enough to not wanting to touch the IP ever again.
I really dislike metroidvanias (i ignored them and 2d platformers on steam).
I’m not sure about Coromon and Monster Crown, they seem like not!Pokemon (especially from the little i played of Coromon) and at that point I’d rather play pokemon plus as much as I try I can’t stand 2D pixel stuff, only game I can tolerate is Octopath

Digimon is great but I already played it, there are also
World of FF and Monster Hunter Stories 2 that are really good monster collecting games, but I played those too

on that note Temtem seems to be up my alley, but it’s a multiplayer game only…

Temtem, despite being multiplayer, the story can be done solo, battles are still 2 vs 2, but you use 2 of your own Temtems at once like Pokémon double battles (though you'll see other players running around), only some end game activities are truly multiplayer. The game is still in early access until September, but the story is fully available in its current version.

Other than Temtem, while I haven't played it and don't know much about it, Bugsnax seems to be some sort of monster catching game? Though, the catching monsters theme is the only similarity to Pokémon.

There's also Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX, I guess, but it's also a different type of monster game, it seems to be more about training monsters than catching them.

If the biggest thing Keighley has at his show is Silksong trailer and release date...then I say that is still pretty good. Its a highly anticipated release so everything else on the show is gravy.

But yea there are a lot of announced games in the industry today that have yet to have deep dives. Its one of those years where updates for announced games will shine more than brand new premieres. Xbox in particular has a lot of shit announced and they need to start showing footage for everything + release dates. Even Sony, Ubisoft, WB, EA all need to push updates on their announced games. I think 2K might be the only big publisher out there that can reveal some surprises.
