Just released.

For the price, I won't even blink. ;)

I played the first game quite a few years ago (well before it was on Steam), and it was enjoyable.

Playing Halo 2, it's interesting to see how many trends of 7th gen console shooters it anticipated, or perhaps heavily influenced. From the linear campaigns, which originated in Halo 1, but feel even more linear so far, to the boring, brown locations in the first Cairo missions.

At least the game feels a lot faster paced than the first game, and the dual wielding is a great addition too. Still, overall I feel the Halo games I played so far (1 and 2) are a clear step down from what the FPS genre achieved in the 90s already.

Big picture, can’t move. Abducted by a cat !
Oh no! A kitten shaped shoulder growth is a very serious condition! :fearful-face:

Good news is that it's not fatal but know that you will have it for many years. The best way to treat it is with lots of love and attention. :cat-heart-blob:

oh ... my ... god! :steam_pig_shocked:

Appreciate the mention! :photoblobheart:

Such an adorable pic! Seriously it seems that you've got an amazing little kitty there Li Kao! Always happy to offer some advice if needed. :smiling-face-with-smiling-eyes:

You bet I will ! The little thing is what, a month old ?
I will have better pics later, now I can’t even see it, it is snuggled between the sofa and my shoulder.
In all seriousness, do you think the mother could be around? Maybe you should take a walk around where you found him/her, it may just have strayed a bit too far and she's worried.

Couldn't get Steam to approve my refund request on Doom Eternal, even writing a custom message.

If you can get locked into purchases even if the publisher effectively destroys the game, that's fucked up.

Obviously it's on Bethesda first, but Valve's unwillingness to work with me at all has shaken my faith in Steam for sure. I'll probably start looking more into DRM-free alternatives like GoG or anything else, and only buy stuff on Steam on a steeper sales...

How long have you owned the game and how many hours playtime?

Did you write to their customer service or just used the refund option? I had Red Dead Redemption 2 refunded when they lowered the price a few days after release by writing directly to them since my refund requests kept getting denied.

I preordered as well. Think it's the first full price game I ever preordered from Steam. Annoyed I can't play single player again without installing a kernel driver so effectively broken my game. I also requested a refund but of course rejected by their automated system. If you're in EU might be some consumer rights body to contact.

I have become very addicted to some games the past few days, the second I start them the time just flies away. They require a lot of time and thinking to understand them and it's a big reason why. It started with Factorio a few days ago and it has somehow made others games click for me. They are Factorio, EU IV, Hearts of Iron 4, Crusader Kings 2, Civ V, Warhammer 2 and Bannerlord.

It's seriously dangerous to click "Play" on them.

Half-Life: Alyx has been updated to include [UWSL]Steam Workshop support[/UWSL]. This includes a beta release of our community development tools, as well as support for Linux and the Vulkan rendering API, and a few small quality of life updates.

Workshop and Editor Tools Beta Release

Half-Life Alyx's level editing tools are now open to the community! You can create new levels, models, textures, and animations for Half-Life: Alyx, and using Steam Workshop you can browse and play everything the community has uploaded.

Want to make your own VR physics sandbox or a giant Rube Goldberg machine? Design a new combat encounter featuring a dozen Combine soldiers at once? What about creating the world's longest Multitool puzzle, or imagining a whole new district of City 17? [UWSL]Crack open the tools yourself and make it happen![/UWSL] If you just want to play what the community's been making, [UWSL]browse the Half-Life Alyx Steam Workshop page[/UWSL] to try out the latest and most popular addons.

This is the first Beta release of the Alyx Workshop tools suite, and we intend to add to and improve them in the coming weeks. Included in this release are new or updated versions of:
  • Hammer, the latest version of the Source 2 level editor.
  • Material Editor, the tool for creating and tuning materials in Source 2.
  • ModelDoc, a tool for viewing, editing, and compiling models with animation, collision, and other gameplay attributes.
  • AnimGraph, our animation tool used to create complicated animation setups with blends and transitions.
  • Particle Editor, for making new particle effects.
  • Subrect Editor, for creating smart texture sheets known as "hotspots."
  • Source Filmmaker, the Source 2 cinematic renderer and animation tool.

In addition to these tools, the update includes several sample maps. We've included these to demonstrate and explain how we authored enemy encounters in the game, as well as showcase some new features of the Half-Life: Alyx level art pipeline including tile meshes, static and dynamic cables, and texture hotspotting. The entire set of Half-Life: Alyx maps is also included as editable source for reference - this includes a large collection of interactive objects and prefabs. We'll have news on more features and some smaller additional tools and examples in an future update.

We've also started writing [UWSL]Half-Life: Alyx Workshop Tools documentation[/UWSL]. If you're looking to start your first addon, this is a good place to start. This is a beta release of the development suite and we are still writing documentation for many of these tools, but we hope in the meantime you will dive in and learn by exploring for yourself. We can't wait to see what you make!

Linux and Vulkan

The Half Life: Alyx Workshop update adds a native Linux version of the game using the Vulkan rendering API, as well as optional support for using Vulkan on Windows.

Depending on your system, you may experience better performance using Vulkan, especially if your system is closer to minimum spec. To try Vulkan on Windows, open the Half-Life: Alyx main menu and choose Options > Performance > Advanced (Gear icon) > Rendering API. (You must restart the game for the Rendering API choice to take effect.)

On Linux, AMD graphics and the Mesa RADV driver are recommended for best results.

On Linux, if you had installed the game through Proton previously, please follow these steps to correctly download the update:
  • Go in the Properties for Half-Life Alyx by right-clicking the game in your Steam Library
  • Check the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" box
  • Uncheck the box, and the download will properly complete.

Spectator View

The spectator view (the view other people see when watching someone play) has received a few small updates as well. The spectator view now supports two zoom levels, and can be run in full screen mode by adding -fullscreen to your Launch Options in Steam. There is also now an option to draw the Spectator HUD directly in the SteamVR "VR View" window, so your spectators can see the HUD along with any other SteamVR overlays you use.

Additional fixes

Fixed some occurrences of the player's in-game hands shaking, GPU optimizations for rendering fog, and CPU optimizations for NPCs.

Degica dropped shmups, and turned to Visual Novels instead.
With no disrespect for the people who buy the games, but Degica can release a game with some semi-naked anime chicks, charge 40-50€ for it, charge on top of that € for artbooks/soundtracks/DLCs (or even, split the games in chapters) and many people won't blink, and they surely are getting healthy sales, since they fully went for it.
some VN have that price tag because they cost a lot to translate for example this is Da Capo 3

2,000,000 characters.
1,000,000 words.
80,000 lines.
2.5 years in translation.
for a comparison TiTS series which was scaring companies off with its character count: FC is 1.5 millions of characters and SC is 1.6 millions of characters.
Some of those also have popular VAs although it isn't as apparent unless you go digging for that info, for example Rikka in Da Capo 3 is voiced by Emi Nitta, VA of Honoka from Love Live!.
This little thing here, with artwork that to some may not be much impressive has an all-star voice actors cast

Some of those don't really recoup loc costs.

Yeah I wrote to customer service, not the refund route. (Well I tried refund route first, before I knew it was auto-rejected).

Yeah I've heard people in EU are having better luck. Time to move!

I've had that with the Civ games, where I would play until the early hours of the morning. Panzer Corps 2 is a bit like that, but it's challenging such that it's easy to stop playing after a strategy fails, plus a session may only be 1-2 hours.

I need to get into Bannerlord.

I also don't get the "crave" for the game pass version of Crusader Kings 3. You will still have to buy the DLCs separate, it's a game that people will play for years and sink their time into and I assume after 1 year the game will leave the service unless MS pays for an extension.

I understand game pass more with 1-5 hour indie games, but not with more "endless" games.

I mean, if someone is already paying for a sub to gamepass, they get to play for 0. Then when some new expansion comes out, the base game on Steam will probably be cheap on a sale anyway and you can get it + the dlc on Steam.

Yeah I may open up to subscription services since I'm apparently only renting these games anyways.

Translators cost money.
Voice actors cost money.

Sure, that's easy to understand.

But, shmup programmers, and the usually extensive list of musicians that compose the soundtracks, cost money as well.
And making hardware to test these games on arcade locations, for months, among other things, costs money as well.
And, while naturally not as extensive, they frequently employ voice actors as well. That costs money as well.

They have different costs, but both genres have costs associated with it.
People seem to minimize the amount of time, effort, and expense, needed to make a good shmup.

But, my point wasn't about the "high" price tag of Visual Novels.
My point was that people are apparently much more willing to pay 50€ for a Visual Novel, than a shmup.

There's a "prejudice", in a way, against the genre, in the sense that people minimize the amount of work, effort, and costs that go into making one.
These games aren't usually made by a couple of guys in a basement in a few weeks, and released into the wild.
Many of these games take years to make, between programming, and extensive play testing.

Kind of like when people see a pixel art game, like something INTI CREATES makes, and think it's "cheap", and effortless, and are unwilling to pay full price for it. No, it's not easy, nor cheap, and it takes a decent number of people to make one of their "faux" 8-bit games, and do proper, good looking, pixel art graphics.

Some have the belief that shmups are 30 minutes long, while a Visual Novel is something more lengthy. Maybe that helps explain why people place more value in VNs (although, I still think the good old "sex sells" applies here, especially when one takes a look at the way most VNs promote themselves; I look at one of the examples I linked to, NEKOPARA, who probably has more reviews alone than all shmups on Steam combined, and that's the idea I get).
Personally, I find the opposite. A Visual Novel, you "play" once, and frequently that's it. You may occasionally have branches, but the genre usually isn't replayable. It's one and done.
A shmup is the contrary, you are expected to replay these games countless times, and the gameplay has to support that. I get much more time out of a shmup, than a Visual Novel.
Obviously, different folks, different strokes.

All this rambling, but I basically meant: I wish people were as willing as they are to pay 30-40€ for a good shmup, or buy them at full price, or at release, like they are with other "niche" genres like Visual Novels.
Instead, the games struggle to sell even at 10€ each.

That's why many games in the genre are unavailable on PC, and why some publishers decided to stop releasing shmups on Steam.
People ask for new titles, but if they don't buy them, how can they seriously expect them to continue to be released on the platform?

CITY CONNECTION has started releasing a few classic shmups on Steam recently.
They launched at 8€ each, and these are great fun, and good ports.

See the number of reviews they have:

Then I see something like:

This has more reviews, in just a few days, than the last 2 CAVE ports combined.
I keep mentioning reviews, because it's an indicator of the sales each title has.
It's disappointing, really.

I think its an interesting way to get people hooked in this kind of game, don't get me wrong there'll be ton of DLC though trying the game for "free*" may entice those people to buy it instead of using a subscription service.

That is absolutely not what is implied.

What the hell is this "Sony on PC" even based on ?

Yeah, super happy about Horizon but there is no reason to believe other 1st party AAA games are coming.

Why do you think that poster was hinting at anything PC related anyway ?

I feel so out of the loop sorry. :)

Lashman and Mor has been teasing for a while that more Playstation stuff will come to PC. When and how is the question.
