Mergers bad

But this is extremely funny

I think this is kinda normal. To get an appeal at a higher court, you first you need tell the current one that you find their decision was poopoo.

The US is also legally in a very weird place where companies can accrue as much marketshare as they want really, as long as you cannot convincingly argue that they are forcing monopolistic rents on consumers. So even if the deal gave Microsoft a huge advantage over Sony (which is dubious) that would not be enough. Maybe a hundred years ago, sure, but in a post-Reagan USA. And Microsoft is still at the point where they giving away Gamepass for cheap (you can get pretty much all their AAA games there, on release, for like 10$ a month?) so who in their mind can argue they are extracting monopolistic rents, so money they couldn't force people to pay if they weren't a monopoly.

So I see Illusion, the makers of Japanese 3D horniness and Rapelay, but the less said about that the better are shutting down both as a developer and a publisher.

It's the end of an era for sure, but honestly you could see it coming. Even ignoring their poor western approach (insane prices and zero sales even for 5 years old products) their real issue is they kept making bad games no one wanted instead of focusing on the one thing 90% if not more of the people playing their games used: the Studio/poser. Just search Koikatsu or Honey Select on pixiv and look how many pictures, comics and even videos are made with it
Their games were basically bloated messes that wasted tens of GBs while users only used like 1/4 of it if not less, and that number could easily reach the hundred if you count mods

Also maybe it's just me but there is something hilarious about the wording "we are pleased to announce we're shutting down : D"
Even at the end illusion is still illusion

Indeed, now you don't have to admit you're shit at it!

"Yes, it's AI drawings in the style of a 4 year old. It's artistic, I don't know how to draw it definitely wasn't me."

wow certainly end of an era, the community behind Artificial Academy / Koikatsu party mods and updates was amazing.
This 2023 is enormous making damage : O.
I bought all steam games and some other from other stores.
Could not be very big overseas but illusion was a good japanese developer. I spent a lot of hours on Honey Select games xD.
Really, koikatsu party community was one the biggest ones I can remember.

Honest to god direction I went. I drew tons up to and including high school, but with life such as it is I lapsed. Other things became more important. It's not the same, but it's fun to be able to at least generate images that I wanted to generate. But AI will have to get a lot better before my imagination is satisfied.

I would have at least bought a thing or two on Steam if, apart from censorship, I felt like I was getting the full game. Less so, 'oh they removed the part where ___' and more that feeling of buying a 'second best' version... (Like how I'm still mad at Capcom for not bringing the Resident Evil VR stuff to PC... and Namco for the Ace Combat VR stuff...)

(and I didn't want to buy on one of those sites that gives you 3 lifetime activations etc)

Anyone getting Jagged Alliance 3?
Second game is an alltime classic, one of the best games ever made.
This third one is getting good reviews across the board, I did not expect IGN of all places to give 9.
The only thing holding me back is not knowing how well controller support is implemented. Haven't seen any gameplay showing it yet.

Yep I can understand this, I usually buy those games on steam or Fakku (or other japanese retailers) to support the developer but I play the pirated version.
F.e. the update R13 of unc Honey Select 2 Libido DX + 88GB Mod pack released this past june 14th, unc Koikatsu Sunshine EX R10 + 27GB mod this past june 10th, unc AI SHOUJO / AI GIRL R10 + optional mod pack this last april 23th, no news from Steam / fakku versions to get these updates. The same for most of the other games.

I ended up getting it. To be honest, I pre-ordered it during the sale expecting to refund given THQN history with new games in classic IPs. But yeah, reviews are much better than I anticipated, and I'm excited about it now.

The only issue I'm facing now is that I just started Resident Evil 4, was planning on starting Crisis Core, and am also planning to get Trails into Reverie next week. No idea how I'll find time for all of this but oh well..

Really interested in JA3, really positive bias toward Haenimont, but blew my budget already and when the hell would I play it ?

Cool to see all the journos whining about hidden probabilities being, let's not say proven wrong, but contradicted. I watched my fav and only streamer and he was affirmative that this wasn't an issue. Take your fucking shots wisely, end of story.
Now, ugh, I know the debate won't end anywhere soon, but it's cool to see some dev challenging the holy nuXCOM formula.

Watched some Xenonauts 2 and this reminded me of my love for the only X-Com that matters. But hey, as much as I want to see dev try things, their action point management seems heavy on mental calculation. I don't remember like each soldier has 50 or 100 points per round and each action takes a different amount from it. Planning seems involved.

Atlus is doing their annual survey. While they're now on the Steam train, there were several questions related to Steam wishlists and Steam reviews which surprised me. Off the top of my head it was stuff like "how often do you put games on wishlists", "how often do you write reviews" and "what Steam review range do you consider when considering a game". There were a few more, but I can't remember them.

One day SE will shadowdrop Kingdom Hearts on Steam.

Persona Central actually has a list of all questions translated and says which ones are new (and plenty of Steam-related ones are new): Atlus 2023 Online Consumer Survey Released, Includes New Steam-Related Questions - Persona Central

Unfortunately, no questions about them porting 13S to PC without asking Vanillaware for permission.

I'm conflicted on Jagged Alliance 3.

It looks like a successful venture in a genre I love, but a couple things are holding me back from early adoption.

Reading that the writing and tone are inconsistent, swinging wildly from funny to serious, and the funny parts being cringe...is a bit worrisome. Secondly, the whole merc thing in a failing African-nation political climate sounds a bit sketch as well.

Game looks pretty incredible otherwise, but these narrative setups & settings are a pretty big piece of the pie that are hard to overlook.

Finally, there is a decently priced Steam Key for L.A Noire. I bought one for $10 while they usually cost $40. The sheer amount of hoops I have to go through to get some games on Steam is crazy. Just because of the sheer amount of games that are blocked in my country :weary-face:

Really good interview with Swen from Larian. He talks about what BG3 means to the studio, how they got where they are, how things could go in the future, etc.
not surprising with it being in a mostly dead limbo all this time now but it's a shame to see the official confirmation that Divinity: Fallen Heroes is completely dead, I remember really looking forward to that one when it was first announced

I'm genuinely surprised it still hasn't happened, tbh. It's been over two years. Either Epic decided to get an unusually long exclusivity period or something else stands in the way of a Steam release. Of course, in this particular instance it's entirely possible for this something to just be Square-Enix...

Has TLOU PC been fixed ?
Pretty much. At least, the big issues I had with it were all resolved by the time I wrapped up the game.

True, the sketchiness of the setup is obvious. But can you really avoid it ? I mean sure, there is sketchy and there is SKETCHY, they could always have done better, but from my understanding of the franchise (barely played some older episode) it seems to me the political incorrectness is at the heart of the concept. Every way you slice it and where you put it, the whole pulpy B movie thing about mercs going in a weakened nation to put the current leader off the map is both sketchy and reminiscent of some super bad period of history.

Yeah, this reads true.

I'm typically pretty flexible when it comes to drama & fiction in various entertainment mediums.

But at the same time I'm pretty ashamed of my country's aggressive global insertion policies so subjects of this nature are a bit of a turn off.

I have 2 hours in Jagged Alliance 3 and enjoying it.
Haven't seen anything particularly "sketchy" or politically incorrect or whatever. One merc I picked - Fox, who used to be a model - has some "seductive" lines, but it's pretty tame.

I do have one nitpick - there are only 6 portraits and no voice selection on the custom IMP merc. That annoyed me, I wanted my "TIME TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH" guy back.

And one tip - when you enable DLSS, do not forget to also change resolution scale - it is a separate option.
I only enabled DLSS and was wondering why is my performance so bad. Well, because I left the scale at 100% and was getting DLAA instead. After putting the scale at 67% (which corresponds to DLSS quality), I get great performance now.

I suppose the UI of a game is integral to its code and it’s unthinkable for modders to change that sort of element ?
Just a passing thought, I was thinking about all the great PC games in history and what’s stops me dead in my tracks to play them again are not the aged graphics, but the fucking UI.

My problem with them doing that and then sort of brushing their playerbase aside is funny to me since they as a company woudn't exist because people went and bought lots and lots of DLC for payday 2 after their last 2-3 games absolutely tanked and put their company in bankruptcy basically

Got about 2 hours of Jagged Alliance 3 on the Steam Deck now.

It feels really good!
It reminds me a lot of JA2 but with a modern paint. It works really fine on Steam deck at about medium settings and capped at 30 FPS. Only played it plugged in, so I do not know how much battery it drains, but I read online that it is a bit on the power hungry side.

Stealth is really hard (especially with a controller) and the tutorial was a bit lacking in giving you tips of how to handle stealth well.

There also seems to be no place that shows the entire controller layout, though there are plenty of button tips. Took awhile for me to figure out that pressing the right stick toggled highlighting of interactive objects.

The game shows Steam deck buttons, and there is even a Steam Deck preset for the graphics if you want to use that. Personally, I started with that and then decreased a few graphical options.

No lots of games have UI overhauls and mods. It's just really hard work. First you actually gotta sit down and make the graphics, make sure their readable by the game, and figure out every piece of code that calls or displays them. Then you gotta pack them with very specific names in a way that the game is expecting them.

Then you gotta sit and play-test every aspect where changed UI elements might appear to check for size, display, color, over or underfill problems.

Imo, it's a lot more work then a mod which is just a 3D model replacement or texture edit. Most big UI mods are team projects.

Two of the biggest I've ever known was the Material UI overhaul for FFXIV and SkyUI for Skyrim.

Crazy how much stuff changes in 1 year.

Right now BitSummit is going on in Kyoto.

I don't believe that Komodo was a sponsor last year, they are how ever a Gold tier sponsor this year, there are multiple Steam Decks located at multiple locations. At each both that there is a Steam Deck they even have a little information display brochure at those multiple booths, so people get more information about the Steam Deck.

Last year Komodo just had a regular both were only 1 maybe 2 people could sit in a chair next to each other and that was there both. This year they actually have a bigger booth. With multiple Steam Deck units and space to walk around the booth.

The only thing strange about the booth is his how they have a display case with Steam Deck and they have two Steam Decks shown vertically next to each other. It's just weird and makes no sense.
