That's not the case with Dontnod though. The game is currently in development and won't be out for a while, they didn't take money from anyone (at least on the customers side). They clearly stated that they're going with Epic because they need money and Epic evidently gave them a better deal compared to the one Bamco originally offered.

As much as I'm annoyed about the game not releasing on every platform at the same time and I won't be purchasing it on the EGS, they didn't screw over anyone, they didn't took money from pre-orders, didn't run a crowdfunding campaign, didn't create a Steam page and didn't even say when and how the game was going to be made available to the public.

Very different from stuff like Shenmue or Metro/Anno or other games that used Steam for marketing.
I'm not a fan of EGS like everyone else here, and I have to admit that this is probably the best way to sign with EGS.

I'm still mad at Industries of Titan for being on my Steam wishlist for years. And so there it will stay.

Epic has the money to pay for exclusivity deals, but none to pay their competitive Fortnite players in a timely manner.

I'm black, and even I'll say that Fortnite, from the developers on crunch to the E-sports sector, strikes me as a 21st century slave cash crop.

The South arguably never recovered from the cotton gin though (and of copious racism). I wonder how long they'll be able to ride the Fortnite coattails. Hell, in 2018, weren't we talking about PUBG as the new hotness?

God forbid Valve from doing this. That would feed PCGamer and Era trolls for weeks.
It would be a violation of their fundamental ethos. GabeN created Steam as a response to piracy, stating that piracy is a "service problem." Meaning, if consumers are given more options to purchase, they will be less likely to download/steal games.

Exclusivity is contrary to the mission of Steam.

I'm starting to think being a dipshit is part of the EGS exclusivity contracts.
So, as expected, indie publisher Raw Fury has an EGS exclusive title.

Here is how they are reacting to negative feedback:

This is VERY disappointing. I'm a fan of Raw Fury's output: Bad North, Dandara.

And their cheekiness about it, too. Seems like signing on to EGS makes lots of indies kinda toxic. I think another dev was lashing out like that, too.
MN9 should have taught us all a lesson. However, Shenmue III teaches us a newer one about greed.
When I wrote that post, I completely blanked on Barkley 2.

Add that to the list.

OFC there are many, many games that get funded. Many that don't. But these are high profile games. Shenmue III wasn't even supposed to ever happen.

So there are many, MANY eyes on this,

The secret is that it didn’t make them toxic, they always were toxic.

The media and fans have spent so much time praising the indie scene as “saviors of the industry” over the past decade, the devs themselves have started believing that. And in the process of huffing their own farts, they became entitled and think they can do anything they want.
I think it's that, but I also think it's the arrogance of knowing they can treat the consumers any way they want now because it will no longer affect their bottom line. Unfortunately, that's only going to profit them in the short term. Epic won't be handing out moneybags forever, and gamers don't have as short of memories as they like to think.

gamers don't have as short of memories as they like to think.
Sadly, I think you are mistaken.

Talk about "boycotting" or skipping a game, and the answers you get are "I don't like it, but I have to get this game", or "I wish I could not buy it".
In a year, when most of these developers launch their previously EGS-exclusive games on Steam and elsewhere, I will bet you that most will have successful (re)launches.

That's not "having a short memory". That's having no self control.

I really wanted Mosaic, but the Twitter responses... it's beyond words. How does this not come back and hurt them after the Epic money is gone. This isn't a social issue where someone is upset over a joke, misrepresentation, affiliations, etc. This is absolute spitting, laughing, poking fun at, and sarcastically meme-ing their very own consumers; indie consumers have been very loyal! Steam and consumers made these indie darling get swallowed up by the big corps. Now, "lol fuck you ragamuffin fanboys/girls, we got our money." Epic is hurting us, but ultimately, they will also be the ruin of some of these devs/people taking the bait. You took the money, then be honest. I'll be a lot more forgiving. I'd probably take the money too. However, I would be like... "The money was too good to pass up. If this has upset you, I'm sorry. I hope you will still give the game a shot."

I think they feel that Epic is too big to fail, and now that they're in bed with them they can do whatever they want; their detractors don't matter. Unfortunately for these devs (or maybe fortunately for us), the moneyhatting won't last forever. And then they'll be BEGGING the customers they've insulted and turned away to give them money again. Some will, many of us won't.

What if EGS boycotters are in the minority? Maybe vocal and active, but irrelevant in the long run?
I have the strong feeling like most gamers don't care.
This place is our safe heaven, our own bubble so to speak. Other places seem to be quite the opposite, discussion there are annoyingly hard, you have to repeat and answer the same arguments over and over again.
I am not sure this will turn out as damaging to some devs as some of us think.

The devs/publishers being an ass to anyone concerned about their business decisions bothers me even more than the exclusivity deals.

Well done Raw Fury, you've joined Deep Silver and Annapurna on my ignore list, and I have removed all your games from my wistlist on Steam. I still have plenty of other great games to play.

This isn't just our bubble. I have plenty of friends on Steam who feel the same way. I truly do believe that Epic has paid shills that post all over trying to sway the opinion in their favor, just as I'm convinced that PCGamer is in their pocket. If you listen to these supporter's talking points, it's all the same old drivel over and over again, almost like they're using a script. Reminds me of trolls and bots on Twitter at times.

I'm telling you, I don't think too many people are buying off EGS.

Why are they giving away a free game every month?

Have a gander at Twitter or even Era; outside of trolls, mass amounts of gamers are not happy. It's not just about Steam loyalty. This has to do with, "What happens to my game if this lackluster store doesn't really make it?" Fortnite will not last forever. Tim is being very stupid with his money. I hope he losses it all because of it.

Oh, PCGamer is not our friend.

The real test isn't necessarily whether they can overcome annoyed people like us, I don't think, but whether they can draw enough of a crowd to even look at their store from the Fortnite crowd. The number of people on EGS who a) have an expensive PC that can run demanding games and b) don't already find EGS unpleasant is I imagine a pretty small percentage of their userbase.

I hope all of you don't give up trying to get your refund. What Greed Silver and Ys Net did here is utterly deplorable.
Part of me hopes that this escalates until consumer protection laws kick in and they get fined the ever living shit out of them and sets an example that will keep companies in check again.

Look at egs over the last few months. They are desparate. They went from "we don't believe in sales" to having a crazy loss leading month-long mega sale. From a free game ever 2 weeks, to one every week for the rest of the year.

That screams "someone please use our store, pleaaaaaaaaase".

well then i have more bad news for you ... because they just signed over their second game as well ... they announced the deal 2 days ago

so it certainly looks like they sold out entirely

and i'm beginning to doubt their statements about doing this because they need money SO BAD ... not when i think about Necrodancer and how much it sold on every possible platform + Cadence of Hyrule now

I think it's that, but I also think it's the arrogance of knowing they can treat the consumers any way they want now because it will no longer affect their bottom line. precisely ... it will no longer affect their bottom line ONLY if whatever they signed over is the last game they're planning to ever make

otherwise - they're fucked (on PC at least) ... unless papa Tim just outright buys them

Epic is running on a timer. They have the colossal task of taking out Steam before Fortnite revenue start to dwindle. They are hoping to do this by practically giving away everything on their store and hope people will stick to it.

Fortnite will not be eternal. It will remain popular, sure, but it schtick will get tiresome after a while. This happened to an extent with Minecraft, it is still MASSIVE but you dont see it practically everywhere like some years ago. The difference is that Minecraft is a tool for creative play, basically a bucket full of infinite Lego. Anyone can pick up and play it, and its 'culture neutral' look and feel ensures that it will be on the mainstream forever.

Fortnite is a mediocre shooter with a mediocre crafting mechanic on top. It lives out of popular culture, and when it stops being funny and a more competent competitor steps in, the game will die.

So, that Falcon game is going EGS exclusive too, as has been mentioned briefly. It's a VR game ... that will be able to use SteamVR. A bit absurd. Anyway, the dev seems oddly out of the loop why EGS isn't popular (they also switched off the Up/downvote-bar), and I tried to explain ... I wonder if it helps?

And once again , the like/dislike ratio of this video has been hidden. 🤭

The only way Epic can win this is if they buy ALL of the indies and AA devs out. The indie scene is just so massive that there's no way they can possibly do that, not even with their supposedly bottomless Fortnite coffers. For every amazing game that they end up snagging up, there are 3 more amazing indies releasing on Steam and elsewhere (especially ones that don't have the graphical polish of a "AA" game) that take their place. It's possible that they may carve out a niche for themselves, but their goal to topple Steam is looking less and less likely, especially with heavy-hitters like Microsoft entering the fray. And I am convinced that they were not expecting Microsoft to take the pot shots against them that they have.

No doubts. I still can't eat that Tim said 'Epic hearts Microsoft' without wanting something from them. Like in the kindergarten when you want a toy from some other kid, so you try to be their friend, even after badmouthing them a lot in the past.

It's funny, if they indeed wanted to start selling games because they were worried Fortnite money would end, the way they went about it just made sure Fortnite dies faster.

Such amazingly huge fuck up. They had all the stars aligned in their favour. They had the good will of both the gamer and the Devs, they had the money and even insight by studying steam for years. Yet what they did is just so opposite of what they should have done. It really is amazing but just not in the good way.

eh, i don't believe that shit anymore either .... everyone says "oh, it's just for the alpha/early access period" ... and then it IMMEDIATELY turns out that "alpha/early access" will magically last exactly 12 months .... i call buuuuuuuuullshit

true that ... might be just me softening the blow in my mind ... but well most of the eggsy titles are rough as well so i take them as early accesses anyway :-D
i mean - i don't doubt they're very early with all those games

but i DO doubt they'll finish any of them in EXACTLY 12 months ....

so after that time all those games will either be done months before and unable to release on steam because of the fucking egsclusivity ....

OR (which is the more likely scenario here) they will still be unfinished after 12 months and either remain egsclusive until they're done, or release on steam ... in early access - which would just be fucking hilarious

They've honestly made me more willing to pay for and play games off of Steam, just as long as it isn't on their store. Hell, I've had EA blacklisted for years, and I just downloaded Origin the other day for the free Sims 4, and will probably snag a few expansions eventually when they're on sale. Subbed for the Xbox Gamer Pass for PC even though there's like 1 game on there I'm interested in so far (that I don't already own). Anything but EGS at this point.

... or most journalists
and Sweeneys arrogance and cynicism and high horse mentality aside, I'm sure there are enough people at Epic and their partners that believe EGS is doing good, and wont be convinced otherwise. In my opinion, EGS is the worst thing happening to PC gaming ever (seriously). Not even GfWL comes close.
And a lot has to do with this fanboy mentality they've built, as someone has mentioned. They believe themselves infallable. This industry really is something else. If you were to apply what happens in the games industry to basically anywhere else, it would look completely bizarre and otherworldly.

Oh and btw, just because I love numbers: Origin 52, Uplay 42, GOG 186, BattleNet 4, Steam 1982.

I'm starting to think being a dipshit is part of the EGS exclusivity contracts.
So, as expected, indie publisher Raw Fury has an EGS exclusive title.

Here is how they are reacting to negative feedback:

EGS publishers now: "We don't need customers, Epic is our customer"
EGS publishers in a few years: are dead

I think they're counting on subscription services bailing them out in perpetuity, but the bottom will fall out on that market faster than the old web, and the survivors will be faced with payments that regress more and more every year with no recourse at all.

i have over 300 games on gog ... and pretty much all origin exclusives up until A Way Out (stopped buying after that)
The Way out was so disappointing. Granted I didnt get that far, but it was just so boring. And having to play with another person is something that will make me not wanna play a game any given day. Totally kills any immersion and stands in the way I want to play games.

But I never minded Origin. Granted, it was never a great launcher, but they gave away games a lot, and it was ... ok. I actually started using it around the time I started using Steam, in 2011.

Oh and people, please stop quoting all those Raw Fury tweets, I dont wanna see that disgusting sass over and over again ;)

Epic: We barely have a functional "play" button and this is the only place you can get non-Epic games we purposefully kept off Steam because we knew you'd use them if you had a choice.
Customers: Wait a minute, what?
Epic: WHAT DID I DO?!
GoG: hey guys we have a bunch of old games and a couple new games, btw everything is DRM free.

(New) Microsoft: We don't care how you give us money, through which system or shop. As long as you give us money, we of course prefer you to give us money without a middle man so here take game pass.

Ubisoft: you can buy our games EITHER on Uplay -or- EGS* (*requires Uplay also, sales might get deactived randomly for no reason).
Costumers: I guess we'll use Uplay then
Ubisoft: But I'm awesome for giving you choice, eh?

My wish at this point is that EGS grinds Epic into the ground. But I know they will drop it like a lead balloon if it’s not successful and the Fortnite cash begins to dwindle.

I’d just love to watch the company burn at this point, but I’d take watching a few of the companies who took their money hat then treated potential customers like shit have to come back to their old fans, cap in hand, begging for money. Hopefully Ys Net is one of them.

I seem to recall a certain company called Epic saying all PC gamers where a bunch of pirates, that playing games on the couch was better, and when things went sour with Microsoft, they came back with a whole different speech.
And it served them right, considering Fortnight is what it is (in terms of making money).

I'm sure we will see some companies with similar back-peddling, once Epic stops their financial support.
