Pretty obviously talking about games media etc.., giving big warnings in reviews saying not to get the PC version until it is sorted. I mentioned already to have Valve putting things like a banner on games affected, like they do with Denuvo.
And when is the last time the games media did any sort of consumer advocacy?

What are you expecting from these people?

Also, it is absolutely not Valve's problem that this shit keeps happening. They offer a decent refund policy. That's all you can reasonably ask of them.

EDIT: To add some more thoughts... this example above might seem cherry picked but the truth is, the games media has almost never given a shit about bad performance/bugs, nor have they ever cared about PC versions. Dark Souls back in the day dropped to less than 10fps and still got glowing reviews. The PC version of that game was also a fucking disaster until it got fixed by Durante and that has an 85/100 score on Metacritic. I bet a lot of people also consider it their favorite game of all time.

To some extent, the blame lies with the consumers as well. If you reward bad practices then you absolutely do not get to complain when it keeps happening over and over. That Pokemon game sold 10 million in 3 days. Dark Souls has sold millions as well. All these games which have all these problems seem to sell fine anyway, so why should the people making them change their ways? You need an absolutely colossal fuck up like Battlefield 2042 before customers actually punish them with low sales. And even then, when a game is a complete disaster, all they have to do is patch it up a bit and people sing their praises for "not abandoning the game". It's a completely fucked up situation and it's not going to get better.

I'm confused then, so what is the solution?

Game reviewers don't care as you point out, so they won't do anything.
Players are the same as reviewers it seems and will still buy and play as has also been pointed out previously.
Valve shouldn't do anything, not their problem
Epic is only half the problem, but don't care going by this new 5.1 update that still has stutters.
developers don't seem to notice it in their own games (which seems impossible by all the talk over the years).

It genuinely feels like there is no conversation worth having except, deal with it.

I added some thoughts in an edit to my previous post, but yeah, there is no solution. The only thing you can do is to not buy those games. Nothing will get fixed like that but at least you still hold on to your money.

Kinda silly that freaking Linux might be a better platform for games than Windows if this keeps being an issue. If only Valve could make shader cache downloads available for Windows.
Honestly, anything that pushes more people towards Linux is welcome. It would actually be wonderful if gamers start switching to SteamOS once it's available for everyone.

I'm going through what I finished or at least played so far this year and I'm kind of shocked at how many 2022 games I played. Usually it's like, single digits, but I played 23(!) somehow? Amidst everything else crazy and tumultuous in my life this year I'm just so surprised. Plus all the less-new games I started and finished.

Ghostwire Tokyo
Islets
Tunic
Cult of the Lamb
Haiku the Robot
Onde
Keplerth
Nobody Saves the World
Little Noah Scion of Paradise
Vampire Survivors
Batora
Frog Detective 3
The Spirit and The Mouse
Moonscars
Ghost Song
Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Metal: Hellsinger
Bear & Breakfast
Nomad Survivor
Citizen Sleeper
Spell Defender
Ancient Witch Arena
Stacklands
Pupperazzi

I still don't understand why these big developers can't simply host compiled shaders for every graphics card. There's aren't that many fucking graphics cards that EA or Activision can't do this.
It's not just graphics cards though, it's also every drivers for every graphics card and adding new cards etc. I really don't see it as a feasible alternative, Valves idea is much smarter with "crowd-processing" or whatever you can call it, if they ever get it working on Windows.

Alex looking broken with all these stutter problems.
Obviously for a long time there has been issues, but it really feels like Epic needs to be to be taken to task for allowing this to go on for so long. It would be great if even places like steam had a warning/banner on each game, making people aware that there could be issues and as a way of lighting a fire under peoples asses.
I don't blame him it's exhausting and inexcusable that this keeps happening. Thing is nothing will change as long as people keep preordering games, and I'm guilty of this too (though I didn't buy callisto or midnight suns). It's a tough habit to break.

I also think the industry in general is too lenient on devs. The media is too scared of asking tough questions out of fear that they'll lose their access, or worse, get a legion of company fanboys harassing them on social media for "attacking" their devs. Like every outlet should be pressuring these devs to answer why they don't have a shader compile option. I've read before that it's hard to implement but you sort of lose the high ground in this discussion when a game like Star Ocean of all games has it included. Tri Ace is NOT known for any sort of technical mastery and they did something all these huge AAA devs couldn't do. I'd be embarrassed if I worked at any of those places and I was getting shown up by Tri Ace of all companies.

Capcom did such a great job with Claire and Jill in the REmakes, I wish we'd get more games with them.
Claire was already awesome in the original but Jill was pretty meh, between how fucking weird she looked in cutscenes and the poor VA.
I can't get enough of these games, I'm gonna play the hell out of RE4 and it will probably be my goty.

I blame Kvik real friends don’t show up on steam playing a jrpg, tempting you to buy it only for you to get rolled over by the game.
Why yes, I played Minstrel’s Song :face-with-head-bandage:
You're welcome! :flare_utawaku:

I definitely recommend avoiding trash mob fights though, ideally the main source for money and jewels came from solving quests only. Also consider getting chests/trap detection since you can get powerful items from it.

I inadvertently locked myself out of certain quests, so I'm considering restarting the game. I know you can retry the quest again in another playthrough, but I'm not sure if I want to complete the entire roster (including the new additions). So far, the game is great, though. I can see myself playing it through the holidays.

that banner is done by the developer/publisher !!!!!

if it was done by Valve .. we woudnt have such scummy cases od this like the "last minute denuvo addition" of Callisto Protocol (banner got added week before release) or "hide it until actual release" of Marvels Midnight Sons (banner gor added like few hours after launch)

Well shit, Midnight Suns has Denuvo?? Damn, I never knew... if they added that shortly after the game actually went live, thats scummy af and pretty questionable legally. That honestly would have pushed me off the fence on buying it at launch, if I had known.

That said though, I've played Midnight Suns through most of this last weekend (around 14 hours in so far) and its been amazingly fun.

Its got warts for sure - its technically questionable (the ray tracing is broken), the dialogue is hammy MCU shit (albeit with significant amounts of comic book nerd fanservice) so YMMV. The walking around the base and hanging out parts (which they stole wholesale from Fire Emblem Three Houses) have fun interactions, but are also packed with busywork.

But I really enjoy the combat! Its very enjoyable piecing together a team that works, then tacking on as many kills as possible before your turn ends. They could be more generous with the mission rewards I suppose, but the encounters are so fun I don't mind at all.

I don't have any of the Witcher games. Would it be best to pick up the trilogy bundle then the Expansion Pass for 3 or get the GOTY edition for 3 then complete the bundle. I won't be missing any content if I go the latter right?

Looking at the upcoming next gen update announcement looks like I may have screwed up not buying the base Witcher 3 and get all the DLC for free?

I had to do a double take seeing their logo. It resembled the neogaf logo quite a bit.

If I understood it correctly, it only happens the first time you play the game, so for a multiplayer game it might not be a huge deal, but for single player game it’s a disaster. It is kind of shame that epic has pretty much cornered the market on game engines and less and less game companies do their own, like cd project red switching to unreal for example.
It's not as bad for a MP game in that sense, but every time you update your GPU driver that cache needs to be rebuilt and it will happen again. And again. And again.

Did they say that the expansion dlcs will be free?
Either way, only the third game have paid dlcs. The other games don't have any paid dlcs

Get the GOTY for Witcher 3 and then complete the trilogy with W1 and W2. You won't get any expansion for free, only some minor DLCs if you get the base version of Witcher 3.

I’m unfortunately still not in love. Maybe the strange design choices clash with my ocd.
I know people say to not obsess over battle rank, but it didn’t work for me in my first attempt. I can begrudgingly accept this mechanic, but DO NOT put homing missile mobs in the game too ! The stealth skills are nice but not really efficient most of the time.
And by god, I’m playing Albert, the most straightforward character if you go by internet wisdom, and I… am kinda lost nonetheless.
I am currently presented with 3 quests. To know more about a girl who appears in pubs sometimes, to clear an abandoned keep which has it B2 closed off. To help a flying something, a pokemon ? In retrieving an item in a mountain. Now if this fucking birb did also tell me where the mountain is, that would have been nice.
I will try again today, because yeah, when it works the game has an undeniable charm.

Get Witcher 3 Goty, you don't really need to play the other games before hand and that is such a meaty game especially with expansions. Get the other 2 later (still very much worth playing).
Is it still on special? if not wait until the end of year sale - W3 GOTY seems to go for 80% off.

Witcher 1 has aged like milk and has little impact on the overal story. I would just read or watch a synopsis and be done with it. Witcher 2 is still quite decent but not required.

Of course I bought Wasteland 3 like last week from somewhere I can't refund.

2K sent Midnight Suns to die, it's clear they had no confidence in it.

Midnight Suns underperformed. It only peaked at 15.5k CCU on Steam while XCOM and XCOM 2 peaked at 70k and 133k respectively. I know Midnight Suns is on EGS, but even if its CCUs matched Steam 1:1 lol that would only bring it to about 31k which is still lower than Chimera Squad's peak.
To be honest, it shows something that I have been talking about for quite some time, this particular year has been a weird one when it comes to releases from October to December. Games that would have performed better on different times of the year yet they release outside their proper time area. it happened with Sony games, it happens with the other ones too.

At this point I'm wondering if economic impact is affecting more than I anticipated.

Although, to be fair, I don't consider them bombas, just slower performers.

Why don't you see it as a feasible alternative? Drivers * cards = maybe a few hundred? You don't have to support old drivers nor do you have to support the newest driver for each game. If a game has been out 3 years, let the user compile (I know it sucks but let's be realistic). I KNOW these companies can spare a couple terabytes of storage to vastly improve the experience of their users.

I'm sure all these companies have hundreds of petabytes of available storage, if I in my home have dozens of TB...

All of that, combined with 3 different SKU up to 100 euro, a 50 euro season pass and micro transaction, all of them well visible on the steam page of the game, and a Denuvo solution well beyond every limit that ties the game to a 5 activation limit

While I agree the economy is an issue, I still remain with my previous idea Avengers had a serious negative impact over the perspective of non-Sony Marvel games (and even in that case, the jury is still out since Spiderman 2 isn't out yet)
That, and let's be serious, do you really think X-Com fans care about Marvel? Or that Marvel fans care about Tactical games? Midnight Suns always felt like a game for a fanbase that doesn't exists. If the fanbase was truly there it would have done more than 15k just like, for example, Sonic Frontiers did beat the series record despite the bad previews

Steam China (and all video games in the country) will be offline tomorrow to mourn the death of former president Jiang Zemin. Fun fact: the Steam China store page is currently in black and white to acknowledge his passing.

One thing I hadn't thought of when I made that post was the fact 2K blocked Russian sales which likely hurt its reach as well. Also I don't think it's just underwhelming PC sales as it looks like console sales were also soft. (I know extrapolating total sales from UK boxed sales is dumb, and we really need a full month of NPD sales to get a clearer picture, but it gives a data point).

Going on a tangent, but I wonder what the player spend will look like when Valve does their 2022 year in review. I'm sure it will increase due to the userbase growing larger, but the fact the Russian userbase was effectively blocked from spending will affect it. The pending global recession will probably affect it as well. Also, it felt like there were hardly any big hits this year outside of Elden Ring, Lost Ark and Modern Warfare 2. Even surprise hits like V Rising didn't do as well as games like Valheim.

All of that, combined with 3 different SKU up to 100 euro, a 50 euro season pass and micro transaction, all of them well visible on the steam page of the game, and a Denuvo solution well beyond every limit that ties the game to a 5 activation limit
I had to do a double take when I saw they were selling funbucks. From what I understand, they are only cosmetic skins, and season pass owners don't need to buy them, but it's still very obnoxious.

This! I feel like I should care about Midnight Suns. I liked Firaxis' XCOM a lot. I enjoy card game mechanics. I ought to be the target audience. But... I just don't give a single shit about super heroes at this point, and that feeling is apparently strong. Strong enough that I haven't looked into Midnight Suns at any point during its hype cycle, or after it's release.

Looking at it now though... Denuvo, MTX, and a $100 edition that includes hit Marvel character, Morbius. Gee, how could anyone pass this up? :face-with-rolling-eyes:

It's like someone saw a Venn diagram and concluded, "If we add more circles, we'll get more customers!"

I think this is an important point.

When the game was announced, there were a shitton of people in the youtube and twitter comments complaining that this isnt an action game, and i myself play the game in spite of the marvel stuff, rather than because of it.

Regarding Midnight Suns, I am not a Marvel fan but I love the game wholeheartedly. I knew it would be my jam from the very first reveal. XCOM 3 will be the one game that everyone wants but I am also incredibly happy with them making this game.

tbh if anything Morbius is one of the few characters in that game that actually fits the source material as one of the former leader of the Midnight Sons team :face-with-tears-of-joy:
Makes 0 sense for Iron Man or both Captains to be in that team
Seems like they're stuck between a rock and a hard place with that. Sounds like including him does right by comic fans, but for someone like me, who knows nothing about comics, it feels like a joke. My understanding of Morbius begins and ends with "meme movie bombed twice lmao," and I can't imagine that's an uncommon perspective.

Seems like NVidia decreased the MSRP of the 4080 and 4090 in the EU, but it's not enough, not even close to enough.
4090 went from 1950€ to 1860€, and 4080 went from 1470€ to 1400€.
