Yes, but that's not what I was asking :).

I meant in pure artist time for asset authoring and in terms of storage space, performance impact notwithstanding. Not to mention that, well, gameplay has to follow suit and it's the great old debate about the cost to interactivity of fidelity. Everything gets heavier.

Not that I disagree that streaming asset in dynamically is a good thing! I think it's logical and an idea that's been around for as long as the field of computer graphics. Just that I'm not sure the industry is going to like going with the expectation that this presentation set for next-gen.

I honestly can't get exited about an engine announcement.

Yeah, I know I sound more and more like a grumpy old fart, but something like, the leap from CGA, to VGA, from floppies to CD-ROM (and later DVD-ROM), and stuff like that, were actually innovations and significant leaps in technology, that had revolutionary impact on videogames.
But now? Yeah, a new generation comes up, and a new processor or graphics card processes things a bit faster, and a bit better looking.

How does that translate, in all honestly, in "fun" gameplay?

Not to mention, with every engine version, or new graphics card generation, here comes some pretty tech demos, to show facial detail, and pretty hair, or textures. Most, if not all of it, will never even apply to a game, since the hardware necessary would be immense.

And, to conclude, am I the only one that, while I enjoy pretty graphics on a few titles, I really don't care for this ever quest for visual realism in videogames?
I like the blue skies in old SEGA games. I like the "crappy" city "wallpapers" on Deux Ex. I like pixel art.
I really don't connect much with these highly detailed, "cinematic" (and not very fluid or responsive) games, like those Sony usually makes.

Ok, enough complaints.
I'll get back to work. :)

I rewatched Agni after UE5 tech demo.

Other than character models and expressions, it's not really that impressive anymore. Textures and LoDs have shown their age.

Tim listing off Fortnite, ROBLOX and Minecraft together pretty much confirms Epic is desperately trying to make Fortnite a social platform like ROBLOX or Minecraft.

This is really funny because Fortnite doesn't come anywhere close to what creators can do with Minecraft or ROBLOX and it never will. Like the top ROBLOX game right now hit 2m concurrent users the other day and that game started as a small hobby project by 2 teenagers. Fortnite's creative mode can't do anything like that, its a basic level editor. Not a full-blown creation engine like ROBLOX is.

Horizon is on Steam. Sony does what they do. Just because they demoed UE5 on PS5 doesn't mean they've jumped into bed. Fact of the matter is that Sony needs Epic to develop its middleware for PlayStation and saw this as an opportunity to show some next-gen visuals.

I'm the first to be grumpy about all this buzz for something that is in the end a logical evolution. Real-time GI was a goal long before even RTX and dynamic triangle decimation/lod has been a thing forever. It's truly amazing that we're there now, but saying that this was an announcement that should rock the industry's world was pretty arrogant.

Anyway, to answer your question, there are a few things in there that are conductive to better gameplay. Motion warping and dynamic animation blending from what I recall they mentioned during the climbing segment. They aren't rocket science but they are very valuable to have. Atmosphere is also something that this tech enables and that has intrinsic value.

This is really funny because Fortnite doesn't come anywhere close to what creators can do with Minecraft or ROBLOX and it never will. My two nieces, 11 and 8, have to teach me Roblox and Minecraft as they know everything about it. When I asked them about Fortnite they had no interest. The 11 yo is now obsessed with The Sims!

After multiple cases of games getting pulled out of Steam in the past, even a Steam page is not an assurance anymore.

We need a Steam page and the pre-order being opened.

Cool tech demo. I am more interested with progress in audio and AI, so it was nice to see them show of their new Niagara sound engine tech at least. I do not expect to see many games released using UE5 in the near future, at least not with it not being released fully until late 2021, as mentioned on their announcement page. 👍

There's a slim possibility that Epic snagged the Mafia 1 Remake as a timed exclusive. But I think a wait and see approach is best I don't think the Xbox page was meant to go live yet. From what I can tell, the "proper" announcement on the 19th was supposed to coincide with a surprise release of the Mafia 2 remaster. Which seems fairly conservative. And then they'd reveal when the other games are coming. It's not altogether unusual for the Steam pages to go live closer to release.

On the topic of stuff going live, I notice that Crysis Remastered's entry popped up on PSN. IMO this means the real trailer+FAQ+preorders are going up within a week or so. That's usually the pattern. These entries appearing tend to precede announcements.

Courtesy of Latest additions to PSN - gamstat Weirdly, I notice separate versions of BioShock: Remastered and BioShock 2: Remastered have been added to PSN. They used to only be available in the Collection as I recall. I wonder what 2K are up to.

As for Crysis, I do hope it comes to Steam at launch. Crytek historically release their stuff on Steam, and Epic are kind of their competitor. But you never know. They agreed to timed exclusivity with Sony for Robinson, and also with Oculus for The Climb.
I don't consider 10 buck budget trash as proper support.
I think you're underselling Chimera Squad a bit. It's a charming little spinoff, IMO.

If they are smart they'll release their game on Steam, EGS, and GoG and after that see which storefront bring them more sales.

As for the UE5, it does looms pretty but a healthy amount of skepticism should be applied on any case of vertical slice showing.

They shut down most of their branches and kept Kiev and Istanbul as small satellite studios while Frankfurt is the only studio that actually makes games. It's not like Crytek ever stopped making games. They released Crysis 3 and Ryse in 2013, then Robinson The Journey/The Climb in 2016, then Early Access Hunt: Showdown in 2018, with the full version releasing in 2020. Or it might have been late 2019. I don't remember. They are now working on an unannounced AAA game, and they are co-developing Crysis Remastered with Saber Interactive.

The behind the scenes issues appear to persist to some degree. There are all sorts of allegations about Crytek, ranging from persistent late pay to racism against non-Turks/non-Germans, to employees being put at risk due to nearby chemical plant leaks. Cevat Yerli stepped down as CEO a year or two ago, but his brothers aren't a super great replacement since they were the ones driving sports cars while people weren't getting paid back in the day.

Crytek is a pretty good example of indie-type developer that doesn't know how to function as a big AAA studio. A lot of the abuses and shitty practices you'd find in a team of 4 end up magically scaling to a team of 200+. Which is kind of bonkers. They lost a lot of talent over the years because people got sick and tired of the shit they had to deal with. And they lost entire studios because they couldn't pay them, which was even crazier. The talent that was at Crytek UK is gone. The talent at Crytek Budapest. Gone. They still have veteran team members who have been there since the late 90s, but they'd have a lot more talent if the Yerlis had known how to run a games company properly.

David Sinclair left after Ryse, and was a UI designer on Ryse and Crysis 3. He was a tad critical of this recent recruiting video.


My impression is that things have kind of improved at Crytek since Hunt, but it's still not great.

My dream is Crytek works their shit out. Because they have so many talented devs who believe in Crytek's vision as a company. It's why they joined. Crytek's games are distinct. And they're really, really good. But the welfare of employees matters. If Crysis Remastered is a big hit, and they've got money in the bank as a result, I don't wanna be hearing any more stories about missed payments. If you can't look after your employees, you shouldn't be making games.

People are already taking the demo as gospel so good luck with that.

NEXT GEN IS HERE! IN AN EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE AND CONTROLLED ENVIROMENT THAT DOES NOT REPRESENT WHAT ACTUAL GAMES WILL LOOK OR RUN LIKE! GOOD LUCK GETTING 30FPS ON THIS SHIT!
