You could use a VPN just to activate and download it? I don't know if it's risky but I think I remember people here playing japanese f2p games unreleased in the west
That use to work. As using the install function from steamdb. They did something as I can't install path of exiles on steam anymore.

Regarding Elden Ring, this is the one time I am actually hyped about a game that people are expecting.
Very hyped.

(Of course, quite a few of the more fanatical Soulslike fans would not approve of the way I enjoy those games -- entirely in co-op :p)

Probably Elden Ring is one of the few games that I'm interested enough to get on day 1, but even then I can't really get hyped about anything.

That said I'm intrigued if they'll have fixed the RCE by then, I rarely play them online but from time to time I liked either to get help with a boss or assist someone with a boss.

For Elden Ring I'm in the will buy day 1, but I am not a big souls fan.

Feels like one of those games like Cyberpunk, Half-life 3 or Witcher 4 that you feel compelled to buy because of the hysteria around it. It sort of sucks you in like a black hole even if you didn't give a shit.

Steam Deck looks cool and all, but I'll save my money for upgrading my PC's CPU when the time comes.
This is where I'm at. I think it's awesome, but I don't see myself using it enough to justify the cost. I'd rather put that into a new CPU/Mobo.

The mastery part just feel a bit tedious to my playstyle preferences, but I can certainly see the draw.

And oddly I actually respect the "git gud" gatekeeping on offer. It was pretty daring at the time of the series debut.

Not for me, but I hope the new game turns out well for the fans.

Fair enough. I can't really argue with that since I don't actively use the mp aspect of the games all that much, so I wouldn't know. That being said, I have no qualms about summoning help when a boss is being a pain in the ass. As a matter of fact, my recent replay of Dark Souls was the first time that I actually beat O&S solo. I would always at least summon Solaire because fuck that unfair fight lmao.

Well that's the funny part.

In general mechanics mastery and learning curves are a big part of what keeps engagement high for any random title out there.

It's just when you set the Souls games next to Factorio you're looking at two very different executions of the concept.

When I mentioned tedium in regards to Souls I was thinking about repeated attempts at unique boss fights, each with their own strats needed for success. The repeated trial & error on the way to mastery of these baddies is the part where it gets lost on me. I'm just not into rinse/repeat returns to the same gated sections of these titles.

Conversely titles like Factorio, or RimWorld, Crusader Kings, etc. demand high-levels of skill mastery for success. But the learning process feels more progressive & organic. I.E. you can still progress these titles at noob level as you get your feet and go on to learn & execute the deeper nuances down the road.

That's not to say Souls doesn't incorporate similar architecture to learning curves. They do give you cannon-fodder enemies at the start while you get a feel for the game. Just feels like there's walls you hit very frequently that say, "Git gud or go home." and that's not very appealing personally. I prefer the luxury of being able to bumble around as a novice in the types of games mentioned above with no roadblocks to progress while I learn the ropes.

I was under the impression the multiplayer implementation was a little kneecapped by the presence soul level, that persistent experience counter that affected who you could connect to. When you have the special co-op, that seems to become less of an issue though as the experience ranges are widened iirc. I haven't played much of it in co-op apart from helping with bosses and getting invaded, but I never noticed major issues.

Also, as always when DS2 comes up I am obliged to mention that I think it is excellent and worth playing. I unironically feel it is stronger as a follow up to DS1 than DS3 is in the places that matter to me (so less the action game aspect, more the exploration and world building).

I recently completed playing through the Dark Souls trilogy for the first time, and I also liked DS2 more than 1 and 3. DS1 was quite janky during the second half and some of the bosses in DS3 were too difficult for my liking.
Although, DS3 did have 2 of my favorite boss fights (Soul of Cinder and Slave Knight Gael), so it's a pretty close second. ;)

I didn't really like Dark Souls back when it was all the rage. The intentional obtuseness of the core systems (stats / weapons / magic) was a huge turn off. I don't have time to play your game multiple times to understand what screws me or not, that's what roguelikes with 30 minute runs are for.

I did enjoy Code Vein - but I think there was a guide for a breakdown of what did what by the time I got to it. Similarly, I recently played through Hellpoint co-op with my brother and since we have very limited co-op time we read up on how to do different builds, and referred to the wiki when we were stuck, and it was super fun. So maybe at some point I'll revisit DS1 (at least) after reading up on how shit works. But that means I have no interest in Elden Ring unless it does things differently enough to be really unique.

I enjoyed all DS1-3. Perhaps the 1st one is the best. I played them all with the help of guides and with jolly co-op. Let's see if I dare to venture Elder Rings blindfolded :face-screaming-in-fear:

But DS overall is odd game series. I still think after years the places how they were, how to proceed and what part has what enemies.

Would need to buy the design works at some point to enjoy the artwork.

I always thought the DS mythological difficulty was exagerated. The games rely heavilly on patience and patern recognition, at times they feel more like a puzzle game than an action one, and the difficulty comes from you trying to brute-force your way through it or treating it like all the other action games. It's a game that respects you but also demands respect in return.

I still remember the hardships I felt during my first playthough but in hindsight DS being the first game I ever played using a controller wasn't the brightest idea.

I'll approve only if you're playing coop with yourself - one player with your hands and a Taiko no Tatsujin controller, and the other with your feet and a DDR Dance Pad.

My Elden Ring hype is through the roof. There are plenty of games I love in any given year, but FromSoft is the only developer that makes them consistently. The combination of stellar art direction, rewarding exploration, compelling gameplay (that you're forced to really engage with) clicks with me in a way that I wish I could see in more games.

And on the subject of their difficulty, with the exception of Sekiro, the difficulty of the games is vastly overstated. Honestly, one of the biggest innovations those games made was coming up with ways to make a game feel more difficult than it actually is.

Like, you lose all your souls if you die and fail to make it back to the spot of your death. How horrible! How punitive! Except the exp curve is polynomial or exponential or whatever formula it uses. It grows fast. So even if you lose a ton of souls, it's only a lot relative to your current place in the game. Clear another boss, and you get a clutch of souls to level with and the next area gives way more souls as well. Now, the amount you lost is only a tiny fraction of a single level up. Further, the levels have diminishing returns! So the deeper you get into the game the less relevant it is if you're under the curve. It's a system that makes you feel like you're being horribly punished, but the reality is that the lost souls barely make a blip on your progress.

The way the game handles item persistence is also a trick to make failure feel more punitive than it is. In a normal game, if you explore a big area, get lots of items, then die before saving, you're going to have to redo all of it. Miserable. But in Dark Souls, if you go down a side path and pick up an item on it, then die, you never need to go down that side path again. The item persists through death, so even if you're dying a lot, the actual areas you need to explore each time (and by extension, the number of fights you need to engage with) gets lower and lower.

I don't want to say the games are easy. There are definitely some spicy boss fights and nasty encounters here and there. But most of the perceived difficulty of the Souls games is just smoke and mirrors. They're built to make every failure agonizing, without actually being that harsh.

Sekiro's fucking hard though. It's easier than any of the Souls games once you get the hang of it, but getting the hang of it requires scaling a verticle difficulty curve, and the game is also way more demanding on your hands. Brilliant game, but my left index finger was fucked up for like, a month after playing it because of how much I had to hit L1.

I did that too, Dark Souls fascinated me enough to finally try out the "console experience" and learn gamepad. By the time the gamepad felt comfortable and natural to use i had beaten the game. I actually think Dark Souls is one of the better games to learn because i forces you to be somewhat methodical and not mash your way through encounters while having pretty generous timing windows. Also the game being harder means failing at it feels more natural instead of messing up jumps with kirby or something where you would just feel stupid.

One of my least favorite things about Souls is how some of the biggest fans are so mean to new players or people who want to play casually. Remember everyone, it's game! No one gives a shit if you summon for every boss. I certainly did on my first playthrough. I did eventually git gud and do it solo but like 2 years later. It's also fun to do casual runs where you try out a dumb build and summon all the time! Jolly co-operation is a thing, and without it Praising the Sun wouldn't be so great.

Sister Friede is fun to learn solo, but hell, let people play how they want. Cause God damn that fight is a pain in the ass solo. I probably died 80+ times and I was at like level 90 at the time. I can totally understand why someone wouldn't want to do that.

For what it's worth a youtuber I have relative confidence on was pretty underwhelmed by Black Geyser EA. He basically said he hadn't been this bored by a CRPG in a long time.
Who knows, maybe the game changed a lot.

i guess depends on what you expect from it .... its been pretty low budget and done by non-english speaking devs ... so that itself brings prett clear expectation about the prodcution values and the script.

But i heard otherwise from a friend who played it around december or so ... that its pretty solid oldschool take on the genre and that he got similar sensytion from playing this like he got back when he played BG1

To expand upon Black Geyser.
Well, here are the first impressions I'm talking about (but if you don't speak French, enter at your own peril, I tested it and Youtube auto translate is an industrial accident here).

Highlight: Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness (accès anticipé) - YouTube

The man is a former writer at Gamekult, pretty good outlet in its time, and he... does not really do PR speak or diplomacy. His Fallout 76 was something, with the game crashing and burning before he could even play. A video with lots of laughs and expletives. I'm trying to introduce the character and his lack of diplomacy.

His final take on Black Geyser :
"Honestly, I will stop there on Black Geyser CoD.
I am convinced that the game is probably more interesting later, but as I always say, later is too late. Because it has been what, 1h30 that I have been playing it and I'm falling asleep in front of so much emptiness and generic stuff. So, it's very cool to want to make an old fashioned crpg like that, with very clear inspirations that maybe go a little too far beyond the simple tribute, to BG1, but... we are bored shitless in your game, guys, and we really shouldn't, during the first hour of a video game, whatever the game might be.
If I'm bored during the first hour I won't play a second one. And that's more or less the issue here. So I understand that the game is in EA, and I understand that this kind of game, probably my favorite genre, asks for a lot more than one hour of play to be evaluated, but I have rarely seen an intro so damn boring, for fuck's sake. I wish it was easier to see the differences of packages at a glance. Looking over the Lost Ark packs, it is hard to know what the difference is at a glance.

Though even if I could see them at a glance, I could not even say what is good/useful/etc. I liked the beta for what it was, just not sure if it is worth waiting for the F2P and seeing what is useful after the fact.

Man, I really wonder what Zachtronics are up to these days. They used to have a pretty quick turnaround time (about a year, sometimes less) between their games but now it's been...

over 3 years since Exapunks, their last assembly puzzle game
over 2 years since Molek-Syntez, their last engineering puzzle game
and over a year since both their strategy game Mobius Front '83 and their little online card game.

I need another assembly puzzle game in my life. :(

I've heard that the Gold Pack is the best bang-for-your-buck pack, but also nothing seems really important? Unless you want to really play before Friday, I guess. A bunch of vanity items, some premium currency or things you can buy with premium currency.
I haven't played any of it yet, so I'm just gonna check it out on Friday for free and see how I like it. I hope I like it though, since everything I've seen looks super cool.
Class-wise I'm probably gonna try them all but from what I've seen I'm gravitating towards Shadow Hunter, Scrapper or Sorceress currently.

Also, 500k+ players (that paid at least 15 bucks) now.
