Wait a minute... what does this mean? Have I missed something?
So, Shadowrun 2007 is a GFWL title on PC. If you have the game installed on your PC and don't have a license attached to your Microsoft account, GFWL will require you put in a CD key to get past the title screen, and there is no way to buy Shadowrun anymore to get more CD keys for it.
However, you don't actually need a Shadowrun key. You can enter any game's CD key, as long as it's valid, to get past the copy protection. So what people have been doing to play it again is buying FlatOut: Total Carnage, which is the only game you can get that still has GFWL keys, and hoarding the keys since each one can be used across 10-ish accounts. Then you refund FlatOut, obvs.

And since GFWL was so unpopular, there's no proof this wasn't always the case while the service was live, since nobody ever tried it.

I remember having to make an account for Ireland or whatever, since neither GFWL nor XBL were available in Poland at the time and I wanted to play GoW coop. Weird times.

Waiting for GFWL getting patched out of most games was how I discovered the old-old place back in 2014. Followed a megathread there that tracked all the games where GFWL was being removed.

As someone who used to play Overwatch 1 a lot, Im pleased to see OW come to Steam. I didnt really like the changes that came with OW2 and would've preferred if they hadnt killed OW1, however, but thats a different story.

Anyways, I hope they bring over more games.
I think Overwatch 2 is a great way to start since its gonna be probably the easiest, being free to play.

My only question, and its a big one: will I be able to use my existing Battlenet account and will my progress carry over?
I think that could be easily done for this game. It would entice existing players to come over to Steam if they want -- and at the same time open up the game to a huge new audience (that hasnt played OW before) on Steam.

Not letting people use their existing accounts, like some MMOs did (Guild Wars 2 comes to mind) would be a mistake, and could only be done if theyre super greedy... which Blizzard of course is; but I hope nobody there is that dumb. Imagine you have super rare cosmetics and would lose those just to play on Steam... that would alienate existing players and immediately dampen your success on Steam.

So, with that in mind... I really wonder how they will do it with games that also require an upfront purchase.
For example, having WOW on Steam would be great, but not if I were to lose all progress/characters and would have to make a new "Steam WOW" account. And rebuying stuff would also be odd. Although on a side note, WOW is technically free-to-play, what you buy is the latest expansion (40 bucks I think) and a subscription (15 per month, this also grants access to WOW Classic). The base game is free up to level 20.

And games like Diablo - those are likely easier to bring over, but you could also argue here: can you keep your progress? And if so, will people double-dip to have the game on Steam? I cant see Blizzard just saying "oh you have it Bnet, here it is unlocked for Steam!" Im sure they will want to actually sell things.
Will it be a EA/Ubisoft situation where you'd get the same game twice in your BattleNet library? Will that mean starting over?
Im guessing a lot of Blizzards success on Steam hinges on that, given just how much Blizzgames rely on progess, unlocks and all that (although they are to blame themselves for that, having basically invented the modern GAAS).

Gonna be interesting, and I hope they dont mess it up too badly.

(of course, for newcomers, none of that matters and if thats all they care about, well...then they might just mess it up royally for exisiting players.

On another note, an interesting tweet by Mike Ybarra:

Some tweeted "@Qwik thank you Blizzard and Microsoft, hope Diablo comes next."

and he responded:
"This was been a long discussion within Blizzard for some time based on player input. There are no other factors or partners influencing this."

The Overwatch 2 Steam store page says that a BNet account is required, I'm guessing it'll work kinda like Capcom ID or the Microsoft games XBox login, where the games launch directly through Steam, but in-game you may have to login into BNet, or may have to link your Steam account with your BNet account.

I know, and Mike Ybarra said the game will launch through Steam directly - so it wont have Bnet attached as an extra launcher, it just needs a Bnet account.
But that doesnt answer the other concerns I raised in my posting (In short: OW2 on Steam needs a Bnet account – but will we be able to use existing ones with all progress in tact, or required fresh ones?)

He has to say that, regardless of whether it’s true or not. Microsoft could get into big, big trouble if it came to pass that MS was influencing the company pre-merger.

In all honesty, I think they made the decision on their own.

But they almost certainly knew this would be forced on them should the merger go through. At any rate, this is all hypotheticals - at this point no one can prove what they’d do if the merger wasn’t happening.

Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes Definitive Edition is up now on Steam, 15% launch discount + additional 40% discount for existing owners, both discounts run for the next two weeks.

I would post the store link but Metacouncil's editing tools have been non-functional for the past few weeks for me on mobile (if anybody knows how to fix this, it would be a big help) 😅 Literally the entire toolbar above this text field is greyed out.

They've probably been floating the idea around at least from the moment they decided to make the jump to OW2 with PVP being F2P.

Overwatch 2 has only been on Steam since March, so this is a fairly recent decision by Blizzard. I don't think the Microsoft purchase directly influenced things, but Blizzard leadership probably knew which way the wind was blowing.

Also if Blizzard wants to reenter the Chinese market, they could partner with Perfect World to put their games on Steam China. While Tencent would be the leading choice, there aren't many options for partners as they already burned bridges with NetEase.

They'd have to create a whole new login system to have it be fresh ones, all bnet accounts are cross platform. The only time there is loss of progress is for some special features or if it's functionally a different game (D3 on consoles is effectively not D3 on PC). Diablo 3/4, OW2, etc. basically just pass the login from the bnet launcher to the game directly when launched from there (in D3 you CAN log in separately because it's older, not sure on the others), so as far as I'm aware all their games still have internal login functions, it's just not noticed normally when launched from bnet (sometimes the pass fails and you have a login screen or have to close / reopen).

Edit: I guess I should say this is my personal experience when using Battle.net games, they have enough games on enough platforms where there are probably exceptions. For things that I know are crossplatform already I see no reason they'd go the extra mile to isolate Steam and alienate double dippers

Jagged Alliance 3 is so fucking good. I played it for 45 hours so far since it came out, even today at the office I spent few hours questing and shooting on Steam Deck, where it runs very well. I normally prefer first person and third person games over the top down, but I am so glad I bought it.

Next step JA2 1.13 ;)
Alternatively there's Back in Action which not everyone liked, but I enjoyed it a lot. It's RTWP instead of TB, though.

You know I didn't think of that but yeah this could be a way to get their games back in China.

dolphin is the console emulated itself I mean you don't need to download external bios/core to make the game work.
retroarch is a multiconsole emulator you cannot run the game from that specific console/system without downloading its bios/core. Let's say you cannot run snes games on retroarch without donwloading one of the snes emulators (snes9x, bsnes, etc...) core, you cannot play psp games without download ppsspp core).
You can download system emulated cores throught retrotarch but not (some and mostly of thems) throught steam.
Would be the same legal issues for Valve if the cores all people really use (snes, megadrive, neogeo, atomiswave, playstation, saturn, dreamcast, ppsspp, etc...) were on Steam

Still don't get why this doesn't work while RetroArch does.
Maybe Dolphin got hit with wrong reviewer.
Probably cause you have to manually install the Dolphin core yourself
There is no reason to use the Steam version.
Retroarch from their website has a online downloader built in for all cores. the steam version does not.

Looking at Blizzard games coming to steam now..

Diablo IV = I think they drop this on Steam as soon as new expansion(s) hit that way they maximize double dippers with full price title.

WoW = don't really follow WoW but I see them putting this on Steam as soon as some major big content update happens. Or some type of update.

Hearthstone = I haven't followed this in years too since I stopped playing but I think this has a lot of potential too to bring in new players via Steam.

Diablo Immortal = pretty much same as Hearthstone.

The rest of the classic stuff will probably be released piece meal or maybe they bundle games to form collections they can sell for full price too.

Blizzard games have a lot of loot and items throughout their games so I wonder if we get some type of steam market/inventory integration. Hearthstone cards could generate large market ecosystem which in turn could seriously jump start its presence on Steam. Would be crazy to see them do something like that but you never know. I think if they see $$$ in it it will happen.

I did play JA2 back in 2001 or so and loved it, but somehow never finished.
I hope some modders willl take the tools of JA3 and remake it in its engine.
What I need the most is Bobby Ray's. Mercenary work is just not the same without hauling cargo planes worth of weapons and equipment to the country every few days.

Meant Retroarch at all. It still has older Nintendo console cores.

But they are?
You do not need anything extra for these to work AFAIK.

Returned to Diablo 4 after 2 weeks pause. On act 5, had to do some grinding today as the act need me to be on at least level 35 and I was at level 32. However, based on Internet comments, I should just take my time with the last acts as the endgame is pretty bad.

oh wow the last time I checked they weren’t. I eat my words then. Lol.
But still amazed Nintendo nor Sony did not said anything about this. xD
Then there’s no reason Dolphin cannot be released on Steam.

Heard that the newest patch is being widely disliked by the community, heard that it nerfed every class without really balancing them and the levelling experience was made slower.
(I don't play the game though, so this is only based on hearsay).

Yeah, saw it on the subreddit. Also, Im on act 5, not 6, so I guess I should still take my time with it.

My OLED C2 is arriving tomorrow!

I want to say I’ll play a graphically detailed game on it, but it’ll probably be Chained Echoes.
I tried Tactics Ogre with my oled a few times and that kind of games can look pretty af, go for it

Apples and oranges.

Dolphin is bundled with Wii decryption keys, software such as PPSSPP simulates the BIOS (HLE BIOS) and the operating system.
PCSX rearmed does the same if it cannot find a BIOS file defaults to HLE BIOS, otherwise if it finds a BIOS file it uses high-level emulation.

I dunno about the others but I'm assuming it's the same situation.
