I hate how this is still a shit on a steam controller article. I'm seriously tired of that site.
honestly its one of the sites that only exists for me whenever someone here links to it for some reason.
I havent checked it myself in ages and have no reason too, either.

This goes for other outlets and gaming critics/journos as well, of course. Eventually you see through their idiocy and turn them off and stop giving them attention. We pay way too much attention to negative and stupid people.

Reason: edited for clarity :)

I genuinely can't understand how you can unironically call yourself a serious PC gaming publication when you have such a clear hate boner for Valve all the f*cking time
I wonder who wouldve started the first widely-used gaming store/launcher service if Valve had never started Steam. How would the PC gaming landscape look today if Steam never happened?

or maybe there would just be even more launcher, one more shitty than the next

It's a weird take.
"The Steam Controller configs that work right out of the box on my Steam Deck are great, but the Steam Controller using those same exact configs that I already said are great is bad".

So I was starting to get stressed out by the whole "time moving forward" aspect of Disco Elysium. At one point in the game I was told that there was likely something big going down in 5 days, so by day 3 I was starting to panic that I was running out of time. Finally I checked online, and apparently I have 10 days so that is a relief. I don't need to be constantly worrying about whether or not I have time to talk to someone or explore a new area thoroughly... or maybe I do. Who knows?

I'm already planning a full Inland Empires/Shivers/Substance-abuse playthrough though!

The Steam Controller had its issues, and the usual suspects who didn't understand what it was for shat on it, but overall it was a very good controller that would've been perfect in a V2 iteration.

I really hope Valve goes back to it in the future. I know they've got that kerfuffle with SCUF still lingering, but I hope that renewed interest in the Steam Deck encourages them to make a refined version that has some of the learnings from the Deck implemented into it.

Will be nice to watch this. I played this game late last year in preparation for Alyx, and I had a lot of fun with it. Their take on Zen remains to me so far the most visually interesting part in the Half life series, and it speaks to their craft that the parts in Alyx where you see some of the alien spores creating a Zen like environment feeling a lot like their Zen levels in Black Mesa.

Not just the PC gaming landscape, but even the digital console game landscape. Everyone seems to pattern their themed sales after Steam.

Random thought of the day, when was the last time we had a bomb as big as Babylon's Fall?

It's complete crap, certainly not a low budget affair, and you'd be forgiven for not even knowing it launched, in fact it's not even charting in some regions at all.

Epic is their biggest sponsor and advertiser. The day the Steam Deck released, PC gamer posted a tutorial how to install EGS on it. 🙄

seems like we got another annoying UWP exlusive , with zero info if it ever releases on proper PC stores

Game pass exclusives can go and play in traffic together with EGS timed exclusives.

And peple won't like to hear this, but if you are subbing to game pass, regardless how cheap it is, you are supporting UWP exclusivity.

If you think that’s weird look at the publisher, Aniplex publishing a game on everything except Playstation sure is something

I don’t think Microsoft does exclusives, they have many times said they don’t like them. So if a game is exclusive it seems more of a developer choosing that.
They do exclusives, because The Gunk, Echo Generation and now RPG Time: The Legend of Wright are until further only available on windows store. No dev in their right mind would make their game exclusive to the windows store unless they get a bag of money.

But they would put on game pass if they think it will lead to more sales.

not sure why anybody would want Windows on their Deck unless they REALLY need to play Fortnite and/or Microsoft Excel, but it speaks volumes for Valve they so actively promote the fact its a PC and has options to do whatever you want with your device.
I mean, because you can, and also for those games you can now play on the go that predate Steam and arent digitally distributed and or dont play nice with Linux/proton.

And i think it's obvious: the sort of gamer that would put Windows on the deck would go through the effort to get old games off cd/dvd and onto it.

I know i would.

Or you work at PCGamer and cant use Steam non-ironically

Maybe it is coming to game pass, it hasn't been announced yet. Many games doesn't get announced for game pass until later.

Otherwise, they definetly got a bag of money from MS, otherwise the devs are quite frankly stupid.

Because not only do their limit their audience to a storefront PC players don't want to use, but the winstore backend is hard to work with, so they will just be dealing with an extremely small payable audience and a backend that will make the work of updating and publishing your game harder.

So if the devs chose freely, without getting payed, to put their game only on winstore, not even on game pass (widening their playable audience), then I have no idea what they are thinking. They are choosing to fail.

Why would ms pay for windows store exclusivity? All they care about is game pass and since it isn’t on game pass I doubt ms threw bags of money at them. But I could see them helping them in some way getting it out. But yeah super weird situation and not sure what they were thinking.

I can only see 3 scenarios:

1) They chose freely winstore exclusivty
2) MS is helping them out in some way, MS asks for winstore exclusivity
3) MS payed for exclusivity.

Why would MS pay for exclusivity for 3rd party games and not make their own games exclusive?

I find it more likely that it's 3rd party devs or publishers doing it freely, either out of ignorance, or it could be games that may have been possibly intended to be XBox exclusive, but they ended making a PC conversion and don't want to do the extra work of integrating into a non XBox ecosystem? (For example, Taiko no Tatsujin needs an XBox login, which didn't even work on day 1 when it released on gamepass).

Same reason Sony releases their own games on PC, but pays to delay 3rd party games (like final fantasy), who knows?
That comparison doesn't work since Sony's games are coming years after the Playstation releases, so Sony's own games are timed exclusive as well.
Meanwhile XBox 1st party games are coming out simultaneously on Steam.

Plus if MS was going to pay for 3rd party exclusives, wouldn't they have done that with higher profile games?

What does the time frame have to do with it (being day 1 or not)?

I don't even know how to respond to that question.

The point of exclusivity or timed exclusivity is to make people want to use the platform.
If the platform owner is the one paying for the exclusivity, then 3rd party exclusivity costs money, while 1st party exclusivity does not.

It makes sense that a platform owner that makes their 1st party games exclusive or timed exclusive would also pay for 3rd party exclusivity, to further increase the appeal of their platform.

It doesn't make sense that a platform owner that does not make their 1st party games exclusive would be paying money for 3rd party exclusivity.
In a case like this, publisher/developer ignorance or unwillingness to put the extra work in supporting a different ecosystem is more likely.

Unless they partially funded the game, making it timed exclusive to winstore, the pub/dev is choosing to let the game die.
