Someone send help: I'm considering buying a Football Manager game. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:
I haven't played one in the series since the times it was called Championship Manager (and, it wasn't even one of the later ones).

May I ask: what's the difference between FM 2020, and FM 2020 Touch (which is filled with DLCs)?

looks cool and some nice changes technology wise , but ultimately its lot of tech and PR blurbs. I want to see real games so I'll believe it when I see it in a game. Over the years we've seen so many tech demos from not just Epic that were absolute fail when engine was released. Remember when UE3 had completely dynamic shading system?

Also where is my meatcube timmy?

Unreal Engine 5 looks cool, it will be very good in many games I'm sure.

But it's also very funny to see what they decided to show as for a demo.
In twenty years in Digital Foundry Retro, that will appear as suuuch a 2013+ AAA trope: the cinematic action (featuring scripted events where you just wait for the pretty rocks to fall) slow-ass climbing linear "platformer", with the extra reward for completing the non-challenge where you just wiggle the stick a bit to glide around in the corridor you've just scaled.
Even demos look boring to play nowadays. 😛

Also as I'm playing old PS2 games, it's interesting that all the barely A games of the era, like the shitty Spyros or shooters have such an unconscious influence: it's the same crappy interactive cut scenes, crappy arenas with ennemies to defeat, and barely working platforming with auto grappling, auto jump, auto everything that regularly devolves into a QTE.

But now with extra graphics, so all the awful elements that gutted all the franchises of our youth are what's in. Particularly relevant considering Sony studios that can only produce such games nowadays.
Much smarter people than I am will produce interesting videos about the change of paradigm, from cheap and awful cinematic games derided by all to taking over the mindshare of so many.
I'm sure that platform holder marketing is not a small reason.

Okay, since many fighting games use Unreal Engine, I really wish this means an easier way of making crossplay happen. All fighting games need to have crossplay with GGPO/Rollback netcode as the standard at this point.

The demo video made me want i)A new Drakan worse than bad. It fits perfectly, smaller confined spaces for Rynn to battle, and open world for Arokh to fly around in causing dragon mayhem. Also, it's weird, that the character was the least realistic looking part of that demo. She looked kind of cartoonishly out of place in that world of photo-realisitic rock and sand.

Oh, and I wonder if environmental destruction which is something the engine has always either sucked at or had terrible implementations of; will finally look good or be simulated better. It's the one thing I always hated about the engine, all the way back to Unreal and UT99

Digital Foundry's video about UE5 was really interesting.

Nanite is really impressive and reminds of that old Euclideon 3d engine that claimed "infinite detail". Only not vaporware.

When I read this bit I immediately thought of those digital molecular matter tech demos.

That is true, but take Monster Hunter World. Series had never been on PC before. The PC port was a few months late compared to consoles, and it sold like crazy. I think the Chinese market was a big factor there, though. I think HZD is gonna be a pretty big litmus test. I hope it goes well because I'd love for Sony to embrace the PC enthusiast market.
Technically MH has been on PC multiple times just not out in the west.

Isn't the multiplayer aspect of MHW and grinding the reason why it sold well despite it being a late port?

A real test would have been Dreams (with the VR support)

Those Mafia screenshots look nice. I remember enjoying 1+2. I see III on sale all the time on Steam but never jumped on it.

Pic? (and what is popeyes?)

Honestly, I wear uninspired clothes, and his are on par with mine. :deept:

If Gabe was jelous of Tim it would most likely be because of the small sized clothes. Seeing this on Tim is like seeing a regular person with it/game booth people. Seeing Gabe with it, well you would get that one imagine that people have of overweight gamers playing in their basements or something like that.

Also and are we talking about this Popeyes?

And if so the stories that I heard about when Popeyes did the whole chicken sandwhich thing, people have shoot one another over that stuff, it's crazy

You know what I fear?
That install sizes continue to balloon away as they have done the latest couple of years.

Back when GTA V released at about 65 GB, I downloaded it with my old slow 10Gb internet. It took me me 1,5-2 days to download... That's when I decided to upgrade to 100Gb internet.

But since then, the install sizes have continued to grow and grow.
100+ GB is common now!!! That's freaking crazy!

And often, the best games are way smaller in size, since they focus on gameplay before graphics. See Factorio, Rimworld, Minecraft even!

And as we all know, huge install sizes and SSDs don't necessarily mix...

So now everybody is OK with 30 fps games/tech demos? People are so transparent...
I mean, why wouldn't they.
Sony fanboys have the argument - only made possible by the power of PS5 SSD
MS fanboys have the argument - it's obviously the demo would run at 60 fps on XSeX
Ninty fanboys have the argument - lol, who cares, I need to farm turnips.

Whatever became of those? I remember it was suppose to power an Indy game and then lucasart basically closed shop, but did th tech never wind up elsewhere?
they used it in GTA IV

... and that's about it (as far as games go .... still being widely used in movie VFX)

It did become the GTA euphoria stuff huh? Well at least it didn't completely go to waste.
no, euphoria is a different thing ... but funnily enough - GTA IV was also pretty much the only game where that one was used as well :p

The poly count and real time lighting in that demo are really impressive.
Gonna check out the Digital Foundry video when I have time.

Ah, the popeyes is the drink? Yeah, I noticed that he was sipping from some paper cup, the kind which you get along with junk food. That was ridiculous.

Isn't Euphoria their physics engine first debuted in GTA IV, but Rage is their engine that they iterate on?
If I remember correctly the Euphoria engine was more related to procedural animation (related to inverse kinematics)... It's what allowed GTA IV to feature stuff like precise foot placement when walking up stairs and "smart" ragdoll physics (like when a car hits you and you stumble).

Edit: Oh, and I was convinced that GTA V used a less gimmicky, more refined version of Euphoria.
Edit 2: actually it does, and they toned it down quite a bit. There's even a mod that tries to bring back some of the stuff featured in GTA IV (link)

In the end they might not even need Epic. They could just go with their own launcher + Steam release.

It's not really true though, even on paper.

(That's an extreme example and you can also go cheaper, though not mainstream prices obviously - for now)

Of course, there are also a lot of new SSDs in the ~200€ range which are almost exactly as fast as the one in PS5 (e.g. this one).
Do you mean that consoles aren't built on future, science-fiction technology that only two companies in the world managed to obtain at the same point in time?

You complete ignore the superiorty of "coding to the metal". With that, for any given problem, you can get automatic speed-ups of factor 2, 3, 4, hell whatever constant you want.
What does it entail? It's a simple thing, actually.
You put this eldritch symbol on your machine:

Suddenly, anything running on it will break whatever physical, technological or complexity theoretical limits you usually have to deal with.

It's one of the unsolved mysteries of computer science.

The idea is especially silly since it's not like either MS or Sony are in the business of building or designing either flash chips or controllers.
At least the Apple fans, which seem a bit similar to me when it comes to new hardware announcements and the subsequent shenanigans, can make the legitimate point that Apple currently has the fastest ARM CPU implementation (in-house and therefore exclusively).

Can I cap FFXIV FPS with RTSS without it being flagged as cheating or whatever? Online games always make me nervous about using RTSS...

I don't know if I have completely misunderstood Intel Optane drives, but isn't one of the things that separate them from usual SSD/NVMe technology that their random 4K queue depth read/writes are incredible compared to normal flash storage?
Maybe this only affects OS usage when you query an arbitrary file and this is what makes it feel faster than going from SSD to NVMe SSD in Windows?

Would that potentially be a huge benefactor in games developed with "the new" baseline SSD-tech in mind, or is it just the bandwidth that matter for games? Durante

All I know is the game used to be capped at 90 fps because going beyond that breaks collision and etc. Not sure if they have fixed it yet but I don't believe you'll be banned for it.

While console people are talking about next-gen graphics Im here being addicted to Bannerlord, Rimworld and Factorio, games that doesnt even exist on consoles yet. lol.
Right, I don't know why I am seeking out information about NVIDIA's Ampere GPUs (besides being interested in tech) when I already have a 1080ti and almost exclusively play 2D indie games and recently emulated PS2 and SNES-games.

That's what's the best about PC to me, all the options and endless backwards compatibility, not just fancy graphics. Framerate> gfx, but of course why not both. 😛

I mean, I do like playing some high-end graphic based blockbuster games, but the majority of my gaming time is still used on indie games as many indie games I play have way higher repayability and addictiveness. Factorio, Rimworld, Bannerlord, roguelike games and stuff like that.

So it's somewhat funny. I will always build a high-end gaming PC, but the majority of my time is on non-high-end graphic games.

I mean, I love seeing fresh, new tech tackle older games and just run through them like a hot knife through butter, it;s just that butter tends to be something really old like HL2 without mods. The complaints about lacking 60fps I don't understand, but hten im used to and can basically ignore anything that isn't a full-on slide show, as much as a smooth framerates is nice.
